LC L League Cup Quarter-Final

Bristol City 2:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Wed, 20 December 2017

People really do get very carried away with these things don't they?

Last night was one of those things, away to a good, confident Championship side, changed squad.

Re City, hard as it may be, we don't have a divine right to be better than them. They have essentially limitless funds and the best manager in the world. Obviously we can challenge them but we have to accept it will be hard.

Terrible to watch. Gawd we need a few top players, and quick. We also need to play more attacking football.

That's a very weird attitude to have regarding the game but fair enough.

It was kind of a weird game, though. City were class. A Championship team in top form will often provide more of a challenge than a struggling PL team and I doubt they've had many better games all season. The United players who performed most poorly IMO (Blind, McTominay, Darmian) won't be starting any important games any time soon but when two of our three CMs play badly in the same match, we're always going to struggle to get a foothold in the game. Despite this, their keeper made the better saves. Pogba created a bunch of good chances. Lukaku had a promising cameo, Shaw was solid (and lasted 90 minutes) and Ibra got back amongst the goals 8 months after it looked like his career was over. I just don't see much to get very upset about. It's always disappointing to lose but I'm not too bothered by what I saw on the pitch last night.

Agree with all of that but I personally found martial and rashford performance the most disappointing (due to the same reasons that the rest are fringe players). Both were top selfish and it was sad to see how disjointed our attack was.

Total lack of class from Jose there. They were a bit lucky. If that was true it shouldn't have been said. That fact was they deserved it. Made himself and Man Utd look small time with that comment.
Oh well I'm going to bed.

What a poor post. At least read what he said before saying he lacked class.

I prefer to give credit to Bristol City. I studied the team, I made my players aware of their qualities.

“I think they were lucky; before the 1-0 we had two balls hit the post. After the 1-1, we had all the dominance of the game and had the best chances, and then they scored the goal in a moment when we have no chance to fight back.

“They were lucky, but they fought really hard and they’re a good team. Instead of being critical of my players, I prefer to praise Bristol City.

“Of course, we didn’t want extra time, we wanted to win it in the 90 minutes. They had the luck at the end, but they fought to be lucky. Sometimes, you think that luck comes from nowhere, but normally luck comes from effort.”

Last point makes complete sense. He said Bristol City's effort created that luck.

Some of our fans and their urge to shit on Jose is pathetic.

Agree with the anti-Mourinho sentiment. As with many things in football, people's opinions are so prejudiced by their existing ideas about a team or person.

I saw what he said and how he said it.

The fact is they were not lucky. They played better than us. Yes we hit the post twice but one was from a wicked deflection that would
Have been extremely lucky if it went in.
The only gaol we scored was from a set piece we never looked like scoring from open play.
Talking about lucky we were luck that Pogba didn't connect with that wild thigh high tackle or we would be without him for another 3 games.

So him saying they were lucky is both untrue and unsportsmanlike and reflects badly on the club.

Crap match, we lost to a fragile team, sterile possesion, no objectivity in the final third, poor defending, the players look lost on the field and we lacked team spirit. It looks like the team has no ambition to fight for every match. So many negatives you can't bring anything positive from this match.

I've got the feeling that the boxing days are going to be tough.

I don't think we can play Rashford and Martial together, unless it's as 2 strikers maybe. They're both too inconsistent and were tripping over each other as much as the ball last night.

Both can look really good as a LW (although Martial looks more naturally suited to it) but we then need someone on the right who can balance it out by occupying that side of the pitch properly, especially when we don't have Valencia providing some width from RB.

We really don't use the whole pitch well enough at all tbh. Last night you could see gaping holes and you just felt that if a utd player could be there once in a while Pogba would have more to aim at.

I'm with @Pogue Mahone to a certain extent. We didn't see anything that was a surprise about the 2ndXI, it doesn't REALLY matter (it mattered more last year) & the full First XI has, generally for the most part, been a lot better than that.

That fact is they weren't lucky at all so his whole point was wrong and whiny.
I mean which of their goals was lucky?
Looking from the outside in I felt his comment was more aimed at the time we scored, didn't allow you the chance to equalise. In that sense I get how we were lucky and how our effort on the night gave us the chance to be lucky.

I hope we are just as "lucky" in the semi against those other boys.

You were in front twice in the match we never were.

The thing is though. You are not City, Chelsea or Liverpool. If you manage to get the best of a Man Utd and actually play at least as well as us then the first comment should be.
'I'd like to congratulate Bristol City for a quality performance.' Be magnanimous. Show some class for feck sake.

What you don't say is they got lucky. Especially when there was no luck to it.

Jesus he gave them praise too and lots of it. Lucky in the sense they score in the dying moments perhaps.
You're making too much out of it.

Finally got to watch the match, disappointed but Bristol City are not a bad side, better than some PL sides we've played.

Our back two are at present the least reliable, Darmian was pretty poor.
Ibra looks rusty and Rashford off form. McTominay looks Ok sometimes but the game passes him by a lot.
Shaw had a steady game but would have like to see him overlapping more.

Bristol were better than United. Not lucky, better tactics, exploited our weaknesses in defence. I blame the away kit:smirk:

Jose is such a sore loser, it's fun to watch his post match interviews when he loses.

"They were lucky..." ugh...even the football Gods must be having a laugh at his sourness.

Did you actually see the whole interview?

He goes on to say that Bristol City created that luck through their effort and gave them a lot of praise.

Everyone knows he said "lucky" too many times and then tried to cover it up but it was easy to see through his words.

Are you seriously saying he didn't mean it when he said "they were lucky"?

It's safe to say you didn't saw the interview at all.

I did. Our manager should not defend the poor performance by citing that a Championship team was lucky to have beaten us when clearly we didn't deserve to win that game. Sends a wrong signal to our underperforming players that they lost 'cos they were unlucky.

It doesn't really matter what the manager says. Jeez.
St Pep said the ball was not in good shape.
Klopp keeps complaining about offside goals from last season
Wenger keeps being Wenger

SAF said "He could've got killed there"...

Managers exaggerate, put in excuses, use dodgy words. Shouldn't matter much.

PS: On that topic, I think he gave good enough credit to Bristol City and also used the word lucky too many time. Doesn't matter though.
Pretty sure that he would have gone ballistic against our players for that shoddy performance.

I guess we trained on how to nullify Bristol City instead of working on attacking moves. Losses like this happen all the time, but people should be concerned with the shite we put on display. It's not only this match, but it has been happening for the last couple of months. We have had some lucky results which has us still 2nd in the league.

Really hope that's true.

It wasn't luck though. They deserved the win. No matter what words you put after it saying they were lucky diminishes their achievement and hides our failings.

If a team is willing to push until the final whistle it's not lucky if they score.

We used to push to the final whistle all the time under SAF. One of the most famous nights in the history off the club we scored 2 goals in injury time. It was the best footballing night of my life. That wasn't luck either.

If I asked everyone on this forum what our best season was in the last 15 years, probably 100% would agree on 07/08, but does anyone remember what happened in the league cup that year?

I myself am glad we're out, won it last year and it really matters the least out of all competitions we're in...

If we had played a bunch of kids and got defeated by Bristol City, people would not have complained much, IMO

Darmian Martial Miki Rashford Pogba Lukaku, and not so much Blind & Shaw have all been starters

Everyone who played last night has been a starter yes. But "Most" of them not very regular.

Hello all, I am new here but have read the forum for years.
This thread made me join finally, so please dont get annoyed if I mess up until I get my head around posting.

I honestly think Jose stated Bristol City were 'lucky' were because he can't criticise the referee's, and if you view the match again at the 85 min mark, Rashford played a one - two with Miki and was clearly pushed with a forearm to the jaw.
Now the way we played was not great by any means and I cant say Rashford would actually have done anything with the ball had he not been fouled. But a foul is a foul and we scored earlier from the same position. So I personally think Jose's 'they were lucky' comment was not a lack of class at all, but a surreptitious way of saying Mike Riley was woeful.

We shall see in the next round if they are afforded the same aggression by the officials.
With Chelsea and Arsenal and Manchester city in the semi's and the time the 2 or 3 games take place, I think we will be better concentrating on the league, who needs an extra home and away against premier league consistent winners?
I am honestly glad we went out last night, It was nice to win it last season for the manager to get his first piece of silverware at our club, as I am sure Pep will also desire the cup this year as his first piece of silverware at his club.

True, what I was getting at we had no novices in the team, so it makes the performance even more a disgrace.

Jose said what he said because he’s a malignant narcissist. He pulled the same crap at Chelsea. The guy can never take responsibility for his role in the loss. He’s always blaming the players, the referee’s, bad luck, etc.

All he needed to say was the performance stunk and everyone including players and coaches need to perform better, and Kudos to Bristol City for their passion, work ethic and desire.

Instead he’s disingenuous with his back handed compliments about Bristol City with so many references to luck.
