Martinez was fit to take a penalty, so I wouldn't worry about him too much for now
And Maguire was sick most of the week so was a doubt to play. Even if both him and Martinez are rested against Soton, I think they'll be fine for the weekend.

The more I watch the shootout the more comical it looks. I’m pretty sure at this point Raya had a bet on it.

Having played with 10 men for an hour, we ended up with 30% possession and 7 shots, 4 of which were on target. Strangely, the possession and shot tally is the same as what Newcastle had against them with 11 men in their 2-0 win on Tuesday night.

Still buzzing. The team has shown a lot of guts and character over the last few games. Hopefully we can keep this base level of determination and then we can turn on the style and go on a run with these more winnable games.
For the first time in ages it feels like the players are playing for each other and are really up for the scrap. We've been almost like Arsenal of old the last few years. Technical but no guile and found lacking when teams get in our face

Yes still buzzing but I really hope we raise our games against Southampton Ipswich and the like the same. Looks like we have turned the corner I remain hopeful

The city, liverpool and arsenal games are different as we were the underdogs and could frustrate and try and get a point or snatch a win. Playing against the bottom half teams, who will use the same tactics against us will show if we have the capability to create chances and win against them.

You don't have to touch the offensive player for it to be a foul. The attacking player has a right to jump out of the way and avoid a tackle and still get the call.
Foul without card would’ve been fair in this case, as Dalot also had a right to challenge for the ball.

Not a chance, he'd have cleaned out Merino (I think it was) if he hadn't jumped out of the way, it was yellow card all day long in this day and age

So are 50/50s against the laws of the game now because someone has to jump out of the way? This season, and arguably this game, there have been harder more physical tackles made without so much as a foul when the defender gets the ball. But a player can merely toe poke the ball out of the way and flop over and all of a sudden ref needs to send someone off—keeping in mind that no studs were shown, it was a genuine 50/50, and it wasn’t malicious/cynical.

Indeed he did.

But he didn’t have the right to roll 6 times, end up off the pitch and scream in agony with no contact.

He often does it. His dive here (1:44) is basically what he did for the Yoro one:

I think it pretty much boils down to him being very short for a keeper, so if he's going to reach the corner for a well struck pen, he has to cheat by a step.

Could it be because this happened in front of the dugout and all Arsenal benched rush to call for a yellow that why it was given? Maybe!!

That’s not enough of a penalty. You’ll lose so much in the game with that. The jeopardy of being sent off makes players more circumspect once they are on a yellow. It’s not the refs fault (as bad as he was today) that Dalot dives in for a sure shot yellow when he had one already.

If you change the rules, you’ll see teams just foul players for fun when there is a quality difference- and the cost of a red card would be a short term back to the walls job.

The overall 11v 11 is far better because of this rule - but it assumes that refs are fair. After today’s game, hard to think that there is any way this ref wasn’t crooked.
I agree. I love Ice Hockey and to be honest the violent foul play is all part of the fun. Sometimes you can see players in the "sin bin" cant wait to get back on the ice to do further mayhem.
To my mind the best punishment is the red card system, but there has to be post match punishment too, assuming the player is guilty of course, and the best way to that is financial. Clubs should face heavy fines for every red card which they of course will recoup, and more, from not paying the player for the duration of his suspension. In time most players will learn that their clubs will not tolerate their constant suspensions. Those that dont will be sold and if they continue to disregard the laws they could find themselves looking for a different line of work.

Nah that is a yellow all day long.
With the excitement of the game dalot just got it wrong. No issues with him being sent off at all.
Just had to try and keep a level head and not compound his me mistake (bad touch) with another one 2 seconds later

Yellow cards are a warning so Dalot already had one, he only has himself to blame

He miscontrolled the ball and went sliding in and didn't get the ball, pretty much all refs are going to book you for that, if he'd been given a straight red then yes that would have been a nonsenical card, but that isn't what happened

So nothing coming of the throat grab by Havertz on Ugarte?

Casemiro got a straight red for the same thing on a Crystal Palace player. The media went apeshit for that.

Why is there no investigation into the officiating?

Be glad it wasn't his worst choke of.the match

They had zero shot on target when we had 11 on the pitch. Their number of shots only increased when we had 10 men.

It will be harsh for the Liverpool and arsenal game to say that we try to get a point or snatch a win. I think we played well enough to be competing toe to toe. However, I get your point. They came at us. For clubs that sit back and defend, a different strategy might be required. I am happy to see that Amorim is able to change tactics when things are not working. Hence, I am quietly confident that he knows what to do.

Not seen this angle before. Note how Havertz (after grabbing Ugarte around the throat) collapses about 38 seconds in and writhes on the floor, then springs up 5 seconds later.

Dived twice in a couple of minutes.
Interesting how they back each other. I remember when we played Liverpool during Oles time, I think it was Ole or maybe ETH. Ronaldo put in a very hard challenge on one of their kids and was getting pushed around by them in a small scrap. The only person who came to help him was Bruno. I remember thinking back then that the squad is so not united.

But now you can see Ugarte backing Martinez, I this clip Kobbie gets pushed by Mereno and Mazraoui pushes him back. Martinez backing Maguire.

Even Garnacho showing fight.

How long have we had that “CO-PILOT + PC” sponsor logo on the backs of our shirts? Hadn’t noticed it before. Is a Snapdragon product?

To be fair, if Havertz got a red for that the other player who take his place in the penalty shootout might scored. So in hindsight, that worked in our favor

Nice to see Garnacho go in and shove the twat over when he grabs Ugarte (I think?).

Have just re-watched the game.
Referee was better in the second half and extra-time.
It may be churlish to mention that Altay's distribution is awful.
Dalot's second yellow was stupidity but the first was debatable. The Arsenal player was coming in from behind. Dalot went to ground to play the ball and there was a tangle of legs which meant that Dalot couldn't complete his play on the ball. both players ended up on the ground. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will correct me.

I watched it again today too. Ref was shit. That moment when Bruno is about to shoot (nearly identical to where he scored from) and gets fouled and loses his boot - absolutely a yellow card. But no foul was even awarded, ending with him booking Bruno for throwing his boot. Another instance is when Jesus (?) was injured m, got treatment, then had to go off - under normal rules the player has to wait for the ref to signal to them to come back on (it was a corner). The player never even left the field, was standing 2 yards inside the line, soon as the ball was struck he just ran over and joined in. That also is a yellow card.

Anyway, came here to point out that Højlund only had 4 or 5 chances to hold up the ball in regular time. He held it up twice but lost the ball, and the other passes to him were so bad he was always going to come out second best.

He was really starved for service. Anyway longballs were angled while he was in the center, so he had to run 20 yards to even get near the ball. Partly Bayindir’s accuracy is to blame, but also we just are not using him as a target man at all.
