PL L FA Premier League

Arsenal 2:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 07 May 2017

Not that bothered. We were never going to go full pelt in this game. It has shown that Rooney is done, that Jones and Smalling aren't good enough and Axel hopefully will be a star. On to Thursday and hopefully on to Stockholm.

Disappointing to lose against Arsenal of all teams. But we knew the risk we were taking. We needed to rest players regardless. Even so this game was in the balance and we had our chances to get something. Just poor attacking, poor finishing throughout.

All aboard the Europa League train and no excuses

PL season officially over. Chelsea champions, Spurs, City and Pool in the top four.

Let's win the EL now and finish the season strong with two trophies to show for.

Rooney - playing by default and injuries but really this is the end.
Smalling - you tried your best but just not United material.
Jones - Ibid.
Darmian - See you in Serie A
Axel - looked good. See you next year.
Mata - average today but just back from injury.
Miki - let's give him till next year shall we? Worked hard but didn't do anything much.
Martial - can the real Martial please come back.
Carrick - did his job but not a game changer.
Herrera - was one of the livelier players but not one of your best games. See you Thursday.
De Gea - please stay but I'd leave too if I had to put up with more of this crap next year vs. playing at RM.

  • Axel did his job for us
  • Lingard and Rashford added some needed pace and run.
  • Set pieces are wank
  • And LVG did a miracle making Smalling look great under him.

Hope we do our best and finish 6th in the league, I don't want europa league football next season no matter what happens for the rest of the season.

Rooney is absolutely shocking. :O I'm not even sure if he's on the level of a championship team at the moment. However, that was an expected loss. Jose even took off Herrera and Mikhi to keep them fresh for Celta.

That was pretty awful, toothless going forward and all over the place at the back. De Gea made a couple of really good saves and Tuanzebe had a promising debut. That's about it.

Europa League it is then.

I don't get what the fuss is? People who were posting midweek were even saying they don't care about the result at the weekend. We are finished in the league for the season. Couldn't care if we loose the last few games but keep everyone else fit for he Europa league.

We need to focus 100% on the Europa league. Just need to play in 2nd gear in the league to avoid any more injuries. Thursday is the big one.

Waste of time.

If you dont give a shit about the result Jose at least play a set up that has vague hint of attacking threat. Embarrassed himself immensely here.

Carrick and Rooney's departures cant come soon enough.
Hear hear. We need half a team bought in

It's all part of a brilliant plan by Mourinho to keep Wenger at Arsenal for a little longer.

If this was a one off you'd have a point. It happens in nearly every big game with José, though.
But do you really think Arsenal were good today? We actually started the second half better then them. City and Liverpool away at least were good tests. It's just a strange game at the wrong time of the season for us.

We won the League Cup. Which means we already qualified.

As I said in the match thread, the loss is all on Jose - not going to blame the players when he set up like this and picked the personnel he did. We are not that far from top four for him to give up. It's unacceptable from a Manchester United manager to talk like that.

I don't mind losing, but this kind of shit talk before the match about top four being gone really made me angry. All this led to the shit performance today.

We really better win the bloody EL or it would be a huge failure of a season.

That's such a poor attitude. If we're going to be challenging for silverware, we cannot be playing this embarrassingly.

This team is nothing short of a massive failure.

José needs to go if he cannot motivate the players to go out there and at least try to win the game against one of our biggest rivals.

Absolutely shocking stuff.

We've been watching it for years now.

This is primarily the same team that has underachieved for years now. Outside of Mkhitaryan (who was disappointing and looks injured?) these are the same players that have finished outside of the top four in all years post fergie bar one.

Why is anyone surprised by these performances? Jose will need to get rid and make changes. That can only happen in the summer.

It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out we are a poorer team when we dont have Pogba, Bailly and Zlatan. Our summer signings who basically are now the best players on the team.

Oh, well. Not pleasant to lose to Arsenal, especially as they were there for the taking. Not a good performance from us - it's clear that we've got other things on our mind. Felt very much like a "Just go out there and play" game. We didn't really look to have a plan.

Few positives:
- Tuanzebe and McTominay debuts. Axel being MOTM, obviously.
- No injuries.
- Finally we can truly focus on EL and not have that 4th place chase on the back of our mind.

This is on Mourinho. Anyway, I don't think United had a chance to finish fourth even before this result.

Not sure what's worse, actually losing to this lot in that manner or the fact many seem to be okay with it purely because we have a game 4 days away against a mid table Spanish side.

The chance, although a slim one was still there to get in that top four.. instead we turn up, set up far to negative against a team who themselves are fragile and just let them do what they please.

I'm a big fan of Jose but today he and we deserved that.

On to some of the fans, I don't get how you can just accept a performance like that just because the manager (wrongly in my opinion) has said he is prioritiesing the EL. As a paying fan I accept much more fight and desire from my side, to just almost down tools against a traditional rival is unacceptable.

Thursday and now the EL as a whole is a must win. Given the important Jose has placed on it and given how he is approaching League games in the build up.. it's all on him if we don't win it now.

Yes and if we cock Thursday or the final up? Nothing to fall back on now.

Can we find a manager who at least tries to play attacking football, instead of 6-3-1 kick it long to Martial all game.

Someone put that starting 11 into Fifa. I bet the chemistry would be as shit as it was in real life.

That was terrible.

A nothing performance.

I don't think we'd have got top 4 anyway so it's not like it'll be hugely damaging but I don't want to see Utd play as shite as that and lose easily. That's just simply nowhere near good enough.

As for Mourinho what's the fecking point of being negative in a game like today? Anything other than a win was worthless so why not go for the 3 points?
Yeah, agree with this.
I would much rather he played all the kids and squad players and had a real go at them.

Surely it was an arsenal side who should be there for the absolute taking. Just well beaten by Spurs, having an even worse season that us. Very fragile, and ends up going down to them so easily.

We put a decent team out there despite Europa being our only priority. The players played a bit meh or were instructed to be meh I guess.
In games like these, whoever scores first wins more or less.
Arsenal also played at walking pace in second half, pretty much like us until they got the feckin lucky deflection. They hardly tried to win anything at their home, couple with our gameplan of trying to nick a win if possible made it pretty much a boring affair.

Same old story. Miss an easy chance (thanks Wayne), then get done by a fluke goal. Its happened a bunch of times this season, usually it leads to draws though.

The Premier League has been dead for us for months. This just put a few more shovels of dirt on the season. Not really able to get that angry about it. What difference does it make?

No matter the players we had on the pitch, their attitude was horrible. Mourinho convinced them that this match didn't matter at all for our league campaign, and he's successfully convinced everyone to focus solely on the Europa League.

Honestly, if we didn't really care about the result in this match, why didn't we go for a more cavalier performance? Why were we playing so negatively that our attacking players in Mkhitaryan and Mata were playing more like wing backs? Why was it that we were playing so slow and statically when it wouldn't have mattered if we lost? Seriously, that was a waste of a match for everyone. To lose in such an embarrassing fashion is shocking considering that Mourinho normally has his team fight for results even if they don't matter (remember the match against Liverpool after Chelsea drew against Norwich three seasons ago?)

Despite the commentators trying to spin this into a "Devastating Defeat" i really dont care that much about this result. Arsenal were doing nothing until a huge slice of luck and one of our rejects bailed them out. And i'm pretty sure they'll go back to being shit next week while we have a european semi final we needed to be focusing on more than this.

Also we have to go away to spurs and i'm even less optimistic of getting a result there.

The season was all about the EL the moment we started to get blighted with injuries and dropped points to Swansea, so losing to arsenal doesnt even register with me. They are so small time they'll probably celebrate this like a Champions League win.

That was a very poor second half. Europa was clearly prioritised, which is fair enough, but when you're still in the race for top four by virtue of Liverpool being very average to turn in that kind of timid display at Arsenal is not good enough.

I'm so glad Rooney is leaving at the end of the season and for Christ's sake can someone teach our players how to take a decent set piece?

You hope so.

I expected a lot more kids to play today though. Wanted an actual all kids team to be honest :)

The difference between having Pogba in the team and not having him is night and day. We dom't know how to transition from defence to attack without him.

Its shit to lose. I dont disagree with you.

However, Jose has not made the wrong decision to rest key players. We have simply played too many matches and its caused our players to become fatigued and injured. Rojo, Zlatan, Pogba, etc. all going down in the last few weeks is no coincidence.

All eggs in the Europa League basket and it makes sense. Given our draw against swansea last week I believe that was the final straw for Jose.

Looking at the remaining schedule its unrealistic to expect us to get top four even with a strong team fielded.
