EL D Europa League Quarter-Final 1st Leg

Anderlecht 1:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thu, 13 April 2017

I remember loads of performances away in Europe like this under Sir Alex back in the day.

Get the away goal and then try to make it difficult for the opposition to score.

We were in total control tonight. Anyone moaning about the performance is just annoyed that we conceded late on.

Most here would have taken 1-1.

how did we sit on a 1-0 lead? We could have had 4 or 5 goals. Have a word with yourself ffs.

'We could have had 4-5 goals' I'm tired of hearing this crap. We're simply toothless in attack it's not hard to see. It's not hard to see we don't have any urgency when attacking and we don't have clear plan when attacking.

Not a bad result in the context of a European tie, but our bluntness in attack means we keep churning out these wearisome draws. Massively frustrating not to have killed off this tie.

Can't believe people think drawing with Anderlecht is a good result? This isn't Bayern Munich or Barcelona away it's a fecking average European side who If they played any other decent European side then they would have been walloped 4 or 5-0.

Shows how far backwards we have gone as a club in a few years. Yes we got an away goal but it's not acceptable drawing against shit teams like this...it's becoming a cancer on us

We usually say that the defence has been great this season, having conceded very few goals. But aren't the goals always very easily conceded? Goals that shouldn't be goals? Like today's goal, bad defending and they scored on their only shot on target. In the Everton game, a bad sequence from de Gea and Rojo and Jagielka scored (for the first time in about 2 years) and it goes on like this. Goals like these shouldn't be conceded, especially when your team has trouble scoring goals.

We have 'blamed' the offensive players for the poor season but shouldn't the defensive players take a part of it too? It's just as bad to concede goals that the opponents score on their only chance on target (or 2 shots) - similar to the offensive players not being able to score despite taking a lot of shots.

Am I a bit harsh or do I have the right to think so?
Yeah but offensive players should make sure that we don't depend on a 1:0. Granted against Everton we conceded first but we rarely concede and have a good defensive record. Goals which shouldn't have been conceded don't happen so often imo.

If you're saying 'shambolic' after that, have a word with yourself Jesus. Score draw, first leg away in a Euro QF? They'll get dicked second leg.

I agree, but it is rather disappointing considering we controlled probably 80% of the match, had plenty of chances to score, hit the post, and then they go on and score a barely deserved equaliser with their only shot on target.

Spot on.

We missed a couple of chances yeah but we were hardly swashbuckling in our attack. We were shite, the whole second half, truth be told.
It's not as easy playing away in Europe. We've also had pretty standard results under Sir Alex in Europe. People have short memories. Spurs lost here last season IIRC.

But haven't most of the goals been 'easy mistakes'? Or do I remember incorrect?

My son could turn out to be a Liverpool supporter and i'd still be less disappointed than I am at how shambolic we become at 1-0.

Youve clearly forgotten how bad we were under LVG

Wasn't it something like 28 games at 0-0 at half time

Oh I haven't, with LVG I lost all enthusiasm and became very apathetic towards our results as it was all predictable.

Unfortunately, the way in which these 1-1 draws are coming, that predictability has crept in again, though I retain interest as we have improved somewhat.

I wouldn't have minded as much with the draw if we played to the end, but we didn't (again) and payed for it (again...)

Europa League is right level for this team, we don't deserve CL. I don't know why our managers never learn from their mistakes. Same mistakes everytime; thinking goal is enough to win the match, Ibra playes badly but plays full 90 minutes, Fellaini comes on to protect our lead and fecks up, only Carrick knows how to pass in this team, score is 1-1 Mkhi is taken off for a defensive player.

But is it really true?

There was this moment around 50th minute or so when Valencia simply bailed us out 3 times within what, 2 minutes? We've had Miki and bottled Pogba chance, that's about it.
Fellaini and Rashford also had chances.

Anderlecht had no bite. Simple clearances for the defense. If Fellaini would have been focused we could have kept on for 90 more minutes and not concede. Against Anderlecht, if the players all play like they're not about to concede a goal they won't concede but then you get someone like Fellaini and ruins it for the rest of them.

If you look at it in black and white the result is decent. It's the manner that we play in - that's where my frustrations lie.

If Ferguson was instructing the second half tonight we would have won about 4-0. That team we played against tonight were absolute dross.

Dont think anybody here is disappointed with the result. It puts us in the driver seat. 1-0 and 1-1 really isnt much of a difference. The important thing is we got the away goal.

People like myself are just fuming at the ineptitude of Fellaini/Darmian etc. Also some of the underperforming attacking players who cant seem to finish or score despite some clear cut chances. We are great at keeping possession and controlling a game until we make individual errors that cost us at both ends of the pitch.

Jose needs to use Luke Shaw. Jose needs to get rid of Fellaini. That much is obvious, so its frustrating why he wont do so.

Very worrying that we can't kill such a game off. We've given them a chance especially at OT.

Team goals are an issue. Collectively this side are average. One of the worst sides in the final third. Incredibly wasteful.

I don't see it changing this season: but I do think Ibrahimovic is apart of the problem. His link play is terrible and we miss having someone who can run in behind, through the middle.

Ain't the end f the world
Fully expect United in the SF

But I'm not as confident that they will win the EL

Pretty sure even though we had some chances over the 90 minutes, the plan was, and looks to always be to win 1-0, push for a second if possible, but never risk anything as long as we've gotten that one goal.
Had we conceded keeping the same team a number of posters would have been saying we should have shut out the game.

Zlatan seems to score against tough opposition but cant score when the opposition are poor.

We should have put another two past them. A top team would have. At 1-3, the tie would be over.

Frustrating to say the least. What we need is an early goal next thursday just to calm the nerves.

I predicted a 1-1...so happy with that. Although I did think we should have pushed a bit harder in the second half. Only because our home form is so shite, so anything can happen at OT this season. But not bad. Worried a bit about Martial..who just looks...well...devoid of confidence...or is it interest? Not sure. Zlatan..well for a guy who allegedly says CL is the only reason he would stay...well....fight...bloody fight for it.

As soon as we start that tip tap nonsense where players exchange 4 passes and go nowhere it seems like all intent to go forward has gone and an invite to opponents to come on to us. I just wish we would go for it and kill the game off if we draw then fair enough at least we didn't surrender.

I'd agree of the game ended at HT.

But we were awful in the second.

I guess so. Far too sloppy and plenty of misplaced passes, combined with our inability to hit a cow's arse with a banjo cost us a really positive result.

PS. What's happened to Martial's ability to beat a man? He's worse than Valencia in that regard now. Tackled every time.

Well I've said from the get go that we wouldn't win the competition. I can't see us qualifying in this form.
We utterly dominated them away from home and Romero didn't have to make a single save. Our form has led us to the quarter finals, we're at home with an away goal. What possible clues did you witness in that game that has led you to this conclusion?

Mourinho needs to realise that Lingard is dogshit and should never start a game and Fellaini should never be brought on to defend a lead.

And what the feck is wrong with our attack play?

At least this campaign we're not getting absolutely played off the park like we did in other years

Draw the away leg, and then it's a completely different story at our place. And at least in this cup we seem to remember how to score!

Well since this Manchester United team isn't on Bayern Munich's level, 1-1 is acceptable. Not a fun result but given the fact that the squad is very small and a lot of players have underperformed this season, we shouldn't be too upset. It's still better than losing the game.

Another frustrating night, the second leg will be on a knife edge just like Rostov was. We make hard work for ourselves, Anderlecht weren't that good but we missed so many chances. I still don't see us winning this competition.

We don't deserve? Barcelona have lost 3 of their 5 away games in the CL, conceding 10 goals in them. Aren't they supposed to be a superior team?

Fellaini didn't come on to protect a lead. Lets stop this nonsense. He came on simply because Rashford was subbed for the weekend. Shaw is going to start that match presumable, so is Herrera. Fellaini was the most attacking option we had on the bench instead and that's why he came on.
