EL D Europa League Quarter-Final 1st Leg

Anderlecht 1:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thu, 13 April 2017

It was a miserable performance 90 minutes long and again we couldn't beat a team that is clearly weaker than us in every department of the game.

For a manager that has so much talk about his winning mentality he sure doesn't win alot. He better finds a way not to cock this up at OT or else he will have completley lost my support.
You forgot, who is the coach. 1-0 or 2:0 at most, sometimes 1:1. Well, if Lingard would have finished that chance in the first half, Miki's shot would have gone in and maybe Fellaini's shot would have been well placed, I would think that people would say, great game, good possession and so on.

How the feck is it going to be scary? The worst that will happen is we lose 1-0.
Scary my ass.

No white text. When was the last time it was scary at OT? Even if it's Chelsea.

I hope you're right but I don't think you will be , that second half was shocking, Chelsea won't be in awe like these were tonight!

Just hope they won't score some dodgy goal in the 1st 10 minutes cause that would be a chaos..

Our attack is letting our season down big time.....time and time again and it's fecking frustrating

It's going to come back to haunt us at some point in this competition and I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen next week....

Irritating too that the only chance they had all game they scored.

No if you attack, we did attack but nothing was coming of unfortunately.

If by attack you mean reach the edge of the box and then slow the pace to a crawl and start staring at your team mates, yeah we did plenty of that.

Anderlecht were poor first half and upped their game in the second, but I'm with you, it's not like other managers haven't played defensively in European away ties.

Along with Carrick, I thought Pogba was one of our better players. He was far more forward thinking that you're giving him credit for, considering he was playing pretty deep for most of the game. Obviously people will focus on his miss toward the end, but I think you're being overly harsh.

I admit frustration is playing a part, but he has a habit of equalling his good plays with a series of really poor decision making within a given game. On a broader team context, it seems no one can take control, bar the odd run from Miki and Rashford, everyone opts for the safety first pass instead of dribbling.

As for Martial, he's struggling to make a case for staying at the end of the season, he's lost all confidence, compounded with the fact Mourinho will not be forgiving with him.

I was excited by this team at the beginning of the season. Since January I've been very underwhelmed, it's been like watching LVG United quite regularly.

Carrick's not holding back post match - In control but sloppy, wasteful, lacking killer instinct...

Looked frustrated and not just by this game.

Zlatan to blame upfront really. Just looked like he was in 2nd gear and saving himself for chelski.

Martial was so poor when he came on too. Lingard was hardworking but nothing came off for him today.

We really need to get the Griezmanns and Mpbappes of this world to return back to a world class attack.

Top man, he was really struggling not to lay into us. Clearly bitterly dissappointed
In that second half he was content to play 5 yard passes backwards as much has anyone, hypercritical.

We were timid in our attack. I mean it took us ages to get up the field. Absolutely no urgency whatsoever until we conceded. That's what's frustrating.

I don't know what is wrong with this team.

It feels like we start this match at only 50% effort, than realise it is still a EL quarter final and we should maybay try a little harder, we shift to 75% effort and get a goal as a result. Then it seems like for the second half instead of shifting to 100% and getting the second goal and maybay a third to completley finish off a clearly weaker opponent, we seem to shift back to 50% thinking the job is done with the 1 goal lead. We feel the opponent is becoming much more dangerous than in the first half, so what do we instinctivley do, we take off our better attackers to bring in Fellaini and an extra defender and go full on for defending the 1-0 lead, only to have the opponent equalise on minute 85 and as a closure we get to see United at 100% effort for the last 5 minutes of the match trying to salvage a win but we can't change the result and go home with another draw instead of a victory.

This seems like what happens in most of our games.

No urrgency to get a second or third goal, like we are scared to play offensively and much rather have safe posession than to push forward. I could appreciate the strategy if it would actually win us games but it doesn't, the only thing it accomplishes is we don't lose games because of it, hence draw after draw which literally gets us nowhere.

How many matches have we actually killed off this year? Seems like even our wins are always in the balance bar a couple of examples. If Zlatan doesn't show the desire to score - and he was MIA most of the 2nd half - then the team shows no desire. "Wasted Opportunities" should be the subtitle of the season DVD

Youve clearly forgotten how bad we were under LVG

Wasn't it something like 28 games at 0-0 at half time

You're right I shouldn't but it's our 14th draw of the season and it's getting frustrating.

It's funny because some people jokingly predicted that this game has to be a draw.
Well....that's exactly what happened, again.

Of our last 4 games, 3 have been drawn and I have a sneaky suspicion that against CFC, we will once again, get a draw.

From sounds of it I didnt miss much, was watching warrington game and kept flicking between streams, every time i flicked over we looked static. Were we that poor? Saw they scored with 1st attempt on target. Think i made the right choice in watching the rugby.

If you're saying 'shambolic' after that, have a word with yourself Jesus. Score draw, first leg away in a Euro QF? They'll get dicked second leg.

Think you're forgetting that we're at home.

Jokes aside, we should walk over them. They're bang average.

Good performance. We have nothing to fear from them. The only downside is not scoring the goals so we can rest players next Thursday.

That wasn't the plan. We missed a couple of chances.

We missed a couple of chances yeah but we were hardly swashbuckling in our attack. We were shite, the whole second half, truth be told.

Not a bad result in context but Anderlecht are a very poor side. Not surprised we couldn't put them away because we simply cannot put anyone away.

We need two maybe even 3 attack minded players in Summer as this set of players as a tandem are simply toothless.

That wasn't the plan. We missed a couple of chances.

Pretty sure even though we had some chances over the 90 minutes, the plan was, and looks to always be to win 1-0, push for a second if possible, but never risk anything as long as we've gotten that one goal.

We usually say that the defence has been great this season, having conceded very few goals. But aren't the goals always very easily conceded? Goals that shouldn't be goals? Like today's goal, bad defending and they scored on their only shot on target. In the Everton game, a bad sequence from de Gea and Rojo and Jagielka scored (for the first time in about 2 years) and it goes on like this. Goals like these shouldn't be conceded, especially when your team has trouble scoring goals.

We have 'blamed' the offensive players for the poor season but shouldn't the defensive players take a part of it too? It's just as bad to concede goals that the opponents score on their only chance on target (or 2 shots) - similar to the offensive players not being able to score despite taking a lot of shots.

Am I a bit harsh or do I have the right to think so?

Just glad I didn't back us in running, was going to before Mkhi scored.
Good result, Zlatan was shite. There I said it.
He was pretty poor. I expect him to be fired up for the return leg because of that. He will surely score. Who knows, maybe even in the 1st half. :D
