Cant believe we sold a player(21 years old) who scored 20 goals in 25 appearances last season.

Harry Kane. Wayne Rooney's understudy for United and England. I won't mind a Raheem Sterling's kinda fee.

I don't see the required temperament in him to build on this run but let's see. In any case even at his best he's not really United quality, given we aim to challenge for the title.

This "not United quality" thing is getting out of hand imo, he was GREAT for Lyon last season and he'll only get better, he wont be as explosive in the PL this season, but he is still going to be a dangerous player who will make our team better, might not be World Class now but he is definitely on that path.

He wouldn't be happy sitting on the bench though and playing Rooney deeper isn't much of an option now.

I think we need either a young player who would be happy playing second fiddle to Rooney or an experienced player willing to do likewise who could tide us over for now.

Ofcourse not, we will sign a striker. The market isn't that barren of strikers who won't even be guaranteed starters to resort to converting 2 great talents into an unfamiliar position. Depay has played a grand total of 15 minutes as 2nd striker in the Robben role since he was about 16. He can certainly learn the trait and do a job in case of injuries, but why change a goalscoring winger into a striker? They're pretty hard to find, Di Maria isn't that much of a goalscorer either.
In fairness it worked with Henry and Ronaldo ;)

Heh trust me I won't talk him down for no reason, I love the guy to bits and I've spent plenty of days cheering him at the gerland but I just don't see him becoming the sort of player you are expecting. Aulas right now is hoping to cash in on him as this likely the highest his stock will get.

Only time will tell i suppose.

He has buckets of potential so I can see him at least being tried as striker, but he's not the tallest at 1,76m and barely has experience in that role. We haven't got much goalscoring wingers either at the moment, Di Maria is more about assists and Mata plays like a 10 on the wings. Memphis will most likely play there at times, and it might even be the future for him (not ruling that out), but we're not going to rely on him as a striker. He's a good backup to have for that position though.

I don't think he will be converted straight away when we could use him as winger.

Personally I would call it quits now. I said before the end of the season and will say it again now. If we bring in more than 3/4 players in one transfer window it will take half a season at least for them to jell as a unit.

We have brought in 4 players, 2 down the spine of the team. If we do more tinkering with the spine of the team it could really throw us back to square one with building up cohesion throughout the team.

I think they will be alright with decent DMF in front of them. If you bring in 6/7 players they are no longer a team but a bunch of gifted players playing together. I'd bring in another 3/4 players next year that could include a CB and a striker.

I agree with your general thought. But we absolutely need a Cb, especially with our injury record. And we just lost RVP and another option in Falcao.

Can any posters shed their knowledge of Gabbiadini? Does he fit the sort of profile van Gaal looks for in a forward.

I get that but the more players you bring in in one window the longer it takes to make them tick as a team. I've laughed at Spurs and Liverpool bringing in 7/8 signing ever August window and taking until Christmas before they look anything like a team. Then doing exactly the same thing next year.

You can ease players in.

There is one reason why harry kane is not a much of a risk as people might think. I say this because if van gaal wants a player then they really do have to meet up to a certain standard and not just have the ability to put the ball in the net. If LVG has seen enough and deems him capable of meeting up to his total football philosophy, that is half thr job already done.

I know it's unlikely but it has certainly been mentioned, my guess also is that LvG will be slightly uncomfortable with all this spending, he is famed for giving youth a chance and moulding players into different positions, he will likely see it as his duty to do something spectacular with a young player before he goes, and converting a player like Januzaj into a top striker would certainly fit the bill.

Although I will admit it's unlikely this season, and he'll play safe and get someone in.

I know you think it's unlikely @NL Max but with Di Maria possibly leaving do you think LvG might become a bit more flexible and bring in a player to add goals from the right who can also play up top?

1) Lacazette - Closest thing to Benzema
2) Benteke - Would rather use him than Fellaini
3) Berahino - I think he is an excellent young striker. Sure knows how to finish.

How is Lacazette the closest thing to Benzema (besides their Lyon connection)?

These are the options:

1. Get a top level forward with proceeds from ADM plus an advance from Adidas - one of Messi, Ronaldo, Bale, Aguero, Suarez, Neymar or Muller. Drop Rooney to squad player.

2. Get a young up and coming forward who can push Rooney for his place and either Rooney bucks his ideas up or the new player gets his place - e.g. Kane, Lacazzete

I would prefer 1 if we are serious about challenging for top honours but 2 would be OK I guess.

I don't really see the point of bringing in someone just to be back up to Rooney.

None of these are attainable for any price.

Whoever we sign, there's a big decision involved.

Do we get a lower bracket backup to Rooney or do we sign a potentially world class successor? Or can we get a top class player a similar age that can be phased out while we bring through Wilson and look out for another potentially world class young player?

I think we need to sign a successor and risk upsetting Rooney. I just don't see how we will have to rely on him anymore.

I think it's absolute bollocks that Di Maria will be leaving, but I'll answer anyways ;). With Di Maria leaving we will be light on options for the right wing and striker. We would have Mata(a false winger- not van Gaal's ideal) and Januzaj (he's staying, but will have to improve dramatically) with the addition of Young and Memphis who are better on the left. Valencia is our new rightback and squad depth so not really a replacement. The only player who could potentially fill both gaps is Griezmann, given I haven't seen enough of him I can't judge him as a striker. He could play on the right wing though and could be available for a big bag of cash. The problem remains that van Gaal's ideal striker and ideal winger are different, I can only think of Muller who can play both positions to van Gaal's liking - but even then Muller is a better van Gaal 10.

With the way we've solved our midfield issues so thoroughly I doubt that Griezmann as our only solution will happen though. If Di Maria goes, we will buy a striker and right winger.

There aren't any high class successors available this year. It generally a bad vintage year to pick up a top class striker, so a capable player who can slide in if Rooney is injured would seem appropriate.

Did Real Madrid throw their hands up and moan that Bale was unobtainable last summer? What about Barca when they were signing Suarez? We are up there with those clubs now in terms of global reach and finance and we should have a player of that stature.

Maybe add Sanchez and Benzema to my list - maybe a small step down from those but not by much.
