Playstation Network is a Joke!

I used the same email and password for my PSN that I used for my paypal but I then changed my PSN email and password a few months back, so does that mean I'm safe or can they view my account history and what previous email addresses and passwords I've used?

Dunno, but my current e-mail and password are the same to my paypal. Oh crap.

It's advisable to change the paypal ones to cover your own back, why take the risk?

Saw this on the telegraph website earlier for those that are affected.

Sony is warning customers of its PlayStation Network that hackers have obtained the following information from its servers:
Name
Address
Country
Email address
Date of birth
PSN login and password
If you are a PSN customer, here’s what you should do now:
1. Change your passwords
Many people use the same password for multiple websites. If you use your PSN password on other sites then it is essential that you change it as soon as possible. Go to the website concerned then login and look for an option to change your account details. Choose a new, secure password.
2. Contact your bank
Sony says it has no evidence that PSN customers’ payment details have been stolen but it can’t be ruled out. Call your bank and ask them what you should do. Your bank might suggest replacing your card but will probably just keep an eye on your account.

3. Monitor your bank account
Keep a close eye on activity on your bank account over the next few weeks. If you see any payments that you don’t recognise, contact your bank immediately.
4. Look out for fraudulent emails
If the PSN hackers have your email address, one thing they are likely to try is a ‘phishing’ attack - sending an email purporting to be from a bank or ecommerce site asking for your details. View any such email with suspicion and do not follow links from emails that ask you to provide personal information. If you are particularly concerned then you might want to consider changing your email address.
5. Consider an ID fraud monitoring service
The information that the hackers have stolen from Sony could be enough for identity fraudsters to use to open accounts in your name. If you’re concerned about this then you could register for an ID fraud monitoring service. These services will look for credit checks against your name, such as those carried out when a credit card account is open or when a loan is made, and will warn you when they occur. Typically, this protection will cost a few pounds a month.

Just change the Paypal password, it's easy to do. I suspect nothing will come of the leak (the information should be encrypted anyway right? using an unencrypted text file for credit card details would be suicide) but given the shady and shoddy way that Sony appear to be playing this, then you never know what news Sony might be withholding.

BTW the Xbox's aren't fully unbanned. I tried it last night signing up with a new XBL account and getting the 1 month free trial. You can download demo's and stuff but as soon as you try to play online you get a network error and you are signed out.
So it's basically just allowing the features of a XBL silver account.

You'd have to manually update the dashboard/firmware before you can go back online fully.

Download this

The Tech Game - Xbox 360 Dashboard Update 2.0.12625.0

put that on the root of a USB stick and reboot the console, it should automatically start installing the update.

Doesn't matter anymore, can't get online. They've banned me again.

Yeah I did all that last night and I was just away to update Fifa 11 manually from an update I downloaded from XBOX 360 Update Center but as I said it wouldn't let me on and came up with the ban message.

I can't bloody remember what card I have on there.

That horse has bolted.

In fact people have been complaining that they can not log in to see what details and which cards they have stored with PSN and therefore being unable to know what to cancel.

Luckily for me my card expired long ago, otherwise I would be seriously pissed off.

Yep because everybody is canceling their cards :lol: I haven't seen one person apart from Pogue who's said they're calling their credit card company and I'd urge Pogue not to do that anyway. As Redlambs said, if they wanted money, they'd have it by now yet, nobody has reported anything to Sony.

Seems to me like it was a "look what I can do!"

Forgive my ignorance but when GBs of data can be transferred in minutes, why couldn't the hacker have transferred all 70m people's details within a few hours? Is that something to do with the way the data's stored?

Pretty much, I'm trying to find a post on another forum I visit, but the guy said that in a previous hack attempt on a credit card facility, it took hackers over a week to get just over a million peoples details. Its not hard, just take time.

Apparently there's speculation that Live has been breached as well hence the relax on banned Xbox's...

Pretty good reading of it I think.

PSN Has recently mentioned they are looking into whether personal info might have been compromised.

Remember that doesn't confirm anything was compromised (as it's always POSSIBLE) and the best explanation I have heard makes it seem unlikely any was.

What happened was people with CFW PS3s are always hurting to get online as Sony prevents anything but the latest firwmare from connecting to PSN.

Someone found a CFW that makes your PS3 into essentially a dev console. Being a dev console means if you route through a certain proxy, you are now inside Sony's private network which is limited to Devs and Sony access.

This let the CFW people online again...

Shortly after, someone realized that CC info was not verified with this firwmare. The reason being you are on a Dev machine connecting from inside Sony's private network, you are automatically trusted to make purchases because it's assuming you are just testing and not really buying in the normal sense.

This is obviously horrendously stupid security.

So Sony got hit for lots of downloads that weren't backed by real CC's.

Sony finally had to shut down PSN because they put all their fish (including dev environment) into one bucket - another stupid setup.

They are working to rebuild their security and bring PSN back up, however it's taking a while and I feel they are throwing the personal info out there as a cover for both the time it takes to fix it and it make people forgive them a little ("well it's ok it's down as long as they are protecting my info!").

Also this is the first time Sony has openly mentioned "hackers" in such a way and I think they are using it also as a way to build hatred towards the hacker community (which many people don't realize encompasses both straight up thieves as well as good hombrew people and all in betwee just like they don't realize "muslim" includes good people along with terrorists).

Oh Jesus. Why would you 'urge' someone who is being security conscious to stop being so? It's hard to know exactly how bad this situation is and Sony themselves have told customers to monitor bank statments in response to this issue. If I still had card details with Sony then I would cancel the card straight away. Hasty, paranoid maybe and I still suspect that little will happen but Sony have proven themselves to be a company who can not securely handle my data at this time.

I spoke to someone at Nationwide this morning on an unrelated matter regarding a new card but mentioned the PSN issue as a joke in passing. Needless to say they had been made well aware of the issue by customers.

Until Sony urge customers to cancel their credit cards, I don't see how doing it will be anything more then a needless hassle. Sony know exactly how bad the situation is and by the sounds of it they're not to overly concerned about it. When you look pass the bullshit scare mongering, their press release reads. "PSN infrastructure infiltrated by outside source, possible access to clients personal data, insufficient evidence to state certainty to the matter, change any passwords similar to PSN account and be weary of any irregular charges to credit cards and if so, notify CC company and Sony.

;)

As I understand it, there is a possibility that someone may have access to 70,000,000 sets of card numbers. Without the CVC2 number on the back which pretty much renders them useless, you can't purchase anything without that number. They don't have your account number and sort code, they can't transfer money out of your account, you would be at risk of them purchasing things with your card IF they had the CVC2 number which they don't. Not to mention there are 70,000,000 records of them and they are highly unlikely to make a bee line for you, 'we've got 70,000,000 records here, now where is that bastard dumbo's card details...'

They have access to your purchase history, so be it, if they want to look through 70,000,000 accounts (I don't even want to think about how long that's going to take them) to eventually get to mine just to check out what we like doing to see that I paid for Theme Hospital a while back, they can be my guest. It's nothing I wouldn't tell them if they asked.

They have access to your passwords potentially, so change them. That's about it, as far as I understand it.

and if they only took a small amount from each one, not enough to arouse suspicion, they would be quids in

if it wasn't for the pesky kids

There's some truth in that, take 10p from every account (which they can't do anyway as they don't have those details) and you're a millionaire 7 times over. How many people would call up about their 10p?

Didn't Sony say they do have access to your name, address, date of birth, email & password? If they're clever they can cause all sorts of mischief just with a persons name & address.

Furthermore Sony waited about a week before revealing such personal details had been compromised, they should have done that when they took down the PSN. Their response to this situation has been pathetic and the fact people were easily able to retrieve the information brings serious questions about how well the information was protected/encrypted. The UK Information Commissioner's Office has said it will investigate Sony & I expect similar departments in each jurisdiction to do the same.

You don't know how 'easy' it was for them to get it. Everything is hackable if you're good enough. We don't even know who did it yet, it might have been hard, you're just assuming.

Their investigation is business as usual.

Out of 7 Million People? Quite a lot, I reckon.

70. But still, the point being they would be far outweighed by people who didn't. They'd be quids in.

Yeah, they'd be outweighed, but lets say 1 in a Million people report it, that's still 70 people reporting suspicious activity on their account, it wouldn't be long before somebody clocked on that these 10ps were all going to the same account.

I cant even remember psn password, i actually think it is something like qwerty or 123456

Its just linked to a email address i never use, and never bought anything off the network either.

just another forum but just be weary Bicky. It wouldn't surprise me if they go after the whole industry.

Why though? As far as I know this all started back when Sony removed Linux from the PS3 and then there was that lawsuit with guys who managed to get the master key or whatever, isn't this whole thing a retaliation to the lawsuit and strictly between them and Sony?

I'd be very, very surprised if they tried getting into Live.

I'd like to think that part of the £40 yearly subscription fee I pay goes towards ensuring there is more resilient security.

Not necessarily talking about people here but reading about the usual information sources and its staggering how many Xbox fanboys have pipped up to have a gloat, I mean casting aside the fact the Xbox went through a very long period when it couldn't gurantee you a reliable machine. Why I ask do people actually take sides in these types of things, just think about it in basic terms right now; taking sides on a games console

I think I have been guilty of it in the past too, fecking idiot that I am.

That's pretty much what I've been laughing about since the original console wars. Human beings arguing over which box of silicone and plastic is better
