Playstation Network is a Joke!

Yes, because larger profits won't take a hit by them allowing an open system. How about you go ask Microsoft how much its cost them. Money is rarely made on systems, its made on games.

But of course, doing a bit more research tells you that nobody is immune to issues like this.

I have card details on my account. If I get cleaned out I am going to be very upset.

Apparently Microsoft has unbanned all banned Xbox 360 consoles because they fear they might get a similar attack like the one on PSN. Seems like the hackers might have put fear in Microsoft and Sony.

feck's sake. I've got a credit card on there. Guess I'd better cancel it. fecking Sony. I blame Weaste.

I also got a card but not sure if I wiped the card details after I did my last purchase like I usually do.

I don't know whether to cancel my card or not. It is a pain in the ass.

i think my card on it was an old load an pay card, i dont think my current card is on it, cant remember, must check

I'm not canceling my credit card as you are protected from fraudulent use. I will however be changing my passwords on my email and paypal (that uses the same paypal address) to make sure they aren't the same as my PSN password and indeed anything that you could possibly find with the information that Sony have. I'm also changing my password on here (although not exactly the same) as a precaution because my username here and there is similar and both are linked to the same email account. You can't be too careful. All my internet banking uses a totally different set of passwords so I'm not concerned there.

And remember to change any password recovery questions that match any you used on PSN

Its believed that Sony has only issued a precaution for legal purposes. If data had been collected, it would have been miniscule given the lack of time the hackers had to infiltrate the system, the issue is who's been affected. Do what Wibble says, but as Sony suggested, just monitor your card usage and report anything suspicious. Nothing has been reported as of yet, so its inconclusive if any credit card details had been accessed. Sounds to me like it was a scare tactic. Of course I don't think this will stop Sony in beefing up security to unprecedented levels. Microsoft on the other hand have just bent over and taken it up the arse...

I don't genuinely think people's details is what they were after. They've done the damage they wanted, but I'd change my passwords anyway, especially if you have it linked to your main email account and are stupid enough to use the same password for every site ;)

Can people log back on it yet?

I think I set up a completely different password for PSN which has no resemblance to my others. So I am hoping that should be alright, I don't think they are stealing millions of peoples credit cards - hope not.

Hardly reassuring. And this has nothing to do with Microsoft, this is Sony's security feckup.

Sony said it discovered that between 17 and 19 April an "illegal and unauthorised person" got access to people's names, addresses, email address, birthdates, usernames, passwords, logins, security questions and more.

Why did it take them a week to tell people?

How is that hardly reassuring?? Its common legal practise to cover your arse. You've never seen weather warning of severe thunderstorms only to find you received a sprinkle of rain??

And what do you mean this has nothing to do with Microsoft? They've just unbanned consoles to A. take advantage and B. prevent themselves from being on the receiving end of one of these nerd rages.

This is why i make my purchases on Xbox LIVE using MS Points purchased in a shop, rather than storing my credit card info online

my mate on the other hand has his credit card info stored on his PSN account, he's now panicking

Seems like that might have been a glitch, reports are all over the place with some saying it works and with others saying it doesn't. Anyway Microsoft surely will try to take advantage of this situation, wonder if Xbox live still got a free trial atm.

Can you find me a source where it say's they were deliberately unbanned to keep hackers in their good books, because all the ones I've found seem to think it's some kind of error?

Pull all those banned consoles out from under your bed or from in your closet, because Microsoft just made one of the biggest mistakes they have ever done!

Earlier this morning, on April 26th, Microsoft unbanned every single console that has ever been banned from Xbox Live. It is un certain if Microsoft has a backup of all the banned consoles but as for now, there are no signs of the consoles being rebanned. With the unbanning of all the KV's this means all your Jtags will be unbanned as well, however booting them will still result in a near instant ban!

It would be clever if Microsoft did this to inspire the people deprived of PS3 to reuse the server, however this seems more like a human error. Regardless of the situation, someone is going to be in a lot of trouble for this one!

In order to do this you are going to need to take your banned console and plug it into live, then you are going to have to manually update your dash using this file The Tech Game - Xbox 360 Dashboard Update 2.0.12625.0. Simply put that on the root of a USB stick and reboot the console, it should automatically start installing the update

The Tech Game - Microsoft..Dun..Goof'd?

The Tech Game - Microsoft..***..Goof'd?

There is no source its just a theory based on the timing. Also a lot of people might be considering selling their PS3 now and buy a used Xbox 360 instead and with the 360's unbanned the used market might go into overdrive on ebay etc and with new 360 users more new games sold and xbox live gold memberships = $$$$$$$ for MS.

Being told some unsubstantiated claim on a message board, that it is 'believed' that a statement - about the company's user's personal information being compromised - is just a legal nicety is hardly reassuring. But at least they can cover their own arse, better than their user's personal information.

And unless Bill Gates is sitting in some grotty basement furiously trying to bring down the PSN, then it seems a little pathetic to criticise Microsoft when this is a Sony security feckup.

Isn't about time Weaste rocked up to tell us all how Sony is the worlds greatest corporation and that this will all only see to help ensure the PS3 will be the greatest console of all time..sometime next year..when it's hardware is fully realised?

So what precautions should we be taking? Have they got the card details?

apparently sales of Ritalin, Kleenex and hand lotion have gone through the roof worldwide over the past week or so.

Panic buying has been reported in various places.

that's ridiculous. they're so f*cked now. I ordered a PS1 game for a fiver 2 years ago and now it looks like I'll have to cancel my CC. Superb.

I dont think anyone will know for sure, basically they're saying that if the person was able to get your login details etc, there was nothing to stop them getting your credit card details too. Poor security by Sony.

If you do have credit card details stored on your PSN account id recommend you remove it pronto and carefully check your cc statements for the next few months

The worst part is that they waited so long before confirming that all that personal information had been stolen. Sony's security system has been shown to be wholly inadequate if some hacker has been able to steal everyone's information.

Is there a way to check which credit card info is stored on the PSN? I made a purchase way back when it launched (2007) & am pretty sure that CC will have expired but need to be certain.

Can we access PSN via PS3 yet?

To be honest the chances of you personally having your credit cards details stolen and used are very slim.

I used the same email and password for my PSN that I used for my paypal but I then changed my PSN email and password a few months back, so does that mean I'm safe or can they view my account history and what previous email addresses and passwords I've used?

No its been shut down. There's no chance of people getting your details at the moment.

That horse has bolted.

In fact people have been complaining that they can not log in to see what details and which cards they have stored with PSN and therefore being unable to know what to cancel.

Luckily for me my card expired long ago, otherwise I would be seriously pissed off.
