Playstation Network is a Joke!

Weaste (or whoever), a question for you if you will.

My kid who got a PS3 at xmas has told me his mates in school are swapping accounts to secure DLC's etc... FOC

I have told him no for obvious reasons. But is this even possible?

It is possible. You create a new user on your PS3 and link the friend's PSN account to the newly created user on your PS3 and then download anything the friend has purchased.

I think each PSN account is allowed 5 downloads of a purchased item so it's common for people to swap accounts and share DLC amongst each other.

Pretty much. When the Playstation Store is fully restored they'll be up for download.

I can't believe some people are moaning just because they own the games already, or that they are "old" games.

What were people expecting, La Noire ? They should be grateful Sony are giving any sort of compensation.

How about having the store up for 10 seconds so I can redeem my online pass for a game I bought a month ago... plx?

Would gladly forfeit my 2 free games to be able to play all the features of the game I bought myself last month. But instead, no online play as like most people my 2 day free trial has run out and we have no way to redeem our online code and download the key to be able to use online

Don't think it's illegal but you're trusting the other person with access to your account details & any money that is in your account.

How about asking certain publishers to stop using bullshit like online passes?

Exactly. Sony should do that. They havent.

They've allowed companies to do that and have release day dlc on discs with Sony's name on it, that you cant use unless you download a key.

Course Microsoft have also allowed companies to do that, but they havent had a problem allowing that system to work

You come across very bitter about this. Sony haven't had any problems allowing the system to work either, the system works perfectly fine.

All that had to be done was have it switched off for a while, it was never broken, it just had to be switched off. Something that if the geeks decided to target Microsoft the exact same would have happened to them, only they didn't, so they haven't had to switch off. All Sony did was everything that they should have done and were expected to do.

However some people who have no idea how much security Sony had in place, prefer to shout about them not having a lot despite them not knowing that, and that it's all Sonys fault that some nerds decided to target them. It's not. It's Anonymous fault that the PSN was down, they decided to do stuff to Sony that meant it had to be switched off. They could have decided to do it to Microsoft and all the Xbox users would be raging instead of us and we would all be laughing about how ours worked and theirs didn't.

The system works fine, they just fulfilled their obligations by conducting a proper investigation and then switching it back on with increased security and before anyone says 'well they should have had it in the first place' we don't know what they had in the first place, so that kind of comment doesn't hold any water.

It holds a lot of water because clearly they didnt have the security they are now ensuring they do have. Could have had it, didnt have it. Now they have it because a lesson has been learnt.

It doesnt matter what level of security they did have, it clearly wasnt good enough and clearly wasnt as good as the current level they are installing. If it was as good as what they have now, then whats the point? They might as well call it quits and keep the PSN down as its already been proven that its not good enough security.

This issue has forced their hand to do something they could already have done. They just didnt want to. Thats on them, there's no way around it no matter how much of a Sony fanboy you are. Listen, I still have my xbox live account and even a month without PSN didnt lead me to go back to playing xbox live and xbox games. I still prefer PS3 and Psn but that doesnt mean they've done nothing wrong

Of course I'm bitter, the fighting game community has struggled enough for the past however many years without having games killed off prematurely because people cant play them for the reason they bought them, online gaming.

Super Street Fighter 4 was a second life for the genre, but its been 3 years now and this Mortal Kombat is a great effort from netherrealm. But people will lose interest if they are being denied the ability to play online. They'll find something else to do and next month when the ps store is finally up and their able to play online, the game will have been out for 2 months and those people will no longer care about it. The genre needs all the players it can get and this issue means the vast majority of players cannot play online. Its a disaster for the game

Sorry mate but none of that makes sense.

First of all, your post is filled with assumptions. Why don't I have bodyguards outside my house? I could do. I choose not to. The reason being it isn't needed and has never shown itself to be needed. If someone breaks in and kills me is it my fault for not having security I never needed before?

Why isn't number 10 surrounded by tanks in case someone bombs it, that police man stood on the doorstep doesn't strike me as very off putting and although I don't doubt they have plenty of security there, why not put the military all over the place? They could do, they choose not to. The reason being that they don't need to. If someone bombs number 10 is it their fault for not having bigger security?

Bit extreme but there's a principle. You don't do what you don't know you need to do because there isn't a need to do it.

Because there was never a need for the PSN to have more security, it's security was fine. Then one day something happened and they had to combat it, which they have done. That's all there is to it. Unless you propose that the people at PSN are psychic, and despite there never being a problem they should be able to mystically predict one and put in place measures that have never been needed before then I don't see what your point is. It's just finger pointing and looking for an excuse to be pissed off at the people whos fault it actually isn't. Rather than blaming the idiots who decided to hack it in the first place.

They might as well call it quits and keep the PSN down as its already been proven that its not good enough security.

Well, they might as well not. Because you know, it's up and working now for the vast majority and the rest of it will be here shortly.

The rest of it is just paranoia. If the game is that good then people will flock to play it. It's only if the game is mediocre that people stop giving a shit because it's no longer worth the hassle. If it's worth the hassle people will play it. As with all games.

I like Zarlak's post. It's blessed with sweet logic.

Changed passwords on both of my accounts, no problems. Waiting now for the promised voucher and hoping I can get Warhawks or whatever it's called.

Warhawk is not one of the free games.

Well if we look at it like this, who cares if you die? It wont stop millions of customers playing online. Will they even notice you're gone? I cant imagine people coming online every day for a month wondering where you've gone and when you're coming back.

Your death wouldnt effect people like this. And neither have millions of people paid money for you or bought games to play on you.

But I'm sorry that you clearly dont understand the fighting game genre. It relies on online to survive even though lag means that whoever is the best online is probably not the best in a real life one on one or fighting game tournament. Its the online that creates, expandes and gives the community new players and makes them curious enough to join an offline scene.

This isnt like your favourite call of duty or whatever, the online isnt even the best part about the game. But its what keeps the genre alive, without it we'll see another 10 year gap between Street Fighter installments like between Street Fighter 3 and Street Fighter 4.

As you dont understand it, I dont see why you feel like you have a point to make about it. You dont. You're just naively defending Sony without a clue about this genre. Not all games are the same, neither are their communities

I'm sorry mate but the world is bigger and more significant than your genre. That's where your anger stems from, you're so worried about your genre that your missing all logic and wildly pointing the finger where fault doesn't lie because you're fecked off that people are going to stop playing Mortal Kombat.

If you want to play the 'your death is insignificant because of the millions that play MK that are going to be affected' to try and say that my point is obselete, then let's put it in perspective by saying that your MK is in turn insignificant compared to the much more millions that play every other game that are affected by this to make your point in turn, obselete.

The next time someone decides to punch you in the face, instead of telling you the guy who did it was a cnut and you did nothing wrong, I'll tell you it's your fault for not having better security. :wenger:

I think thats perfectly obvious. Its amazing that you dont understand it

It doesnt matter what someones reason is for striking you, you need to able to defend yourself especially if for some reason millions of people are relying on you and have spent money on you.

If for some reason people had that vested interest in me, I better get back to my tae kwon do and do some boxing to make sure my defence is up to scratch because it would be my responsibility to those people, to make sure thats the case and I dont let them down. Thats on me

Okay then, let's stop sending people to prison for assault/murder. If someone takes umbridge with you, it's your own fault if you're beaten by them.

Sorry pal, the world doesn't work that way. Sony were fine, all of a sudden they weren't due to something happening that came out of the blue and noone could have known was going to happen. Shit happens, it's almost fixed now and everyone is fine again. Disaster averted. No big deal.

You honestly expect me to believe that Sony had no idea that this technology and ability to hack existed? Pull the other one.

They are in the business of knowing whats out there. That doesnt mean that they're going to put their hand in their pocket and make sure they are covered. They clearly didnt

Its not some alien technology and insight that has led to Sony's problem

I find the inference that Sony don't owe it's customers a little insulting. It may not have been their fault they were hacked but t most definitely was there fault that they hid this information for several days. Sony have done themselves no favours.

You honestly expect me to believe that Sony had no idea that this technology and ability to hack existed? Pull the other one.

The trouble with Sony is that it has been split into very different business units, sometimes with one relying on the other. And that can cause a lack of cohesion. It's something of a goal to hit, the cohesion, that Stringer was given the job.

I'll say it again - SCE don't run PSN.

Sony's new PlayStation Network security measures have seemingly been circumvented just days after the service reboot.

According to reports originating from Nyleveia, a new exploit enables attackers to change other users' passwords via the PSN password reset page members are forced to access when they first reconnect to the online service.

Attackers can apparently reset the password themselves using just a PSN account email and date of birth, pieces of data that were compromised in the recent PSN hack.

Nyleveia says it has seen a direct demonstration of the exploit using a newly created test account - and that 15 minutes after informing Sony Computer Entertainment Europe of the exploit the platform holder disabled web-based PSN logins.

The official PlayStation EU Twitter account says the web-based password reset page has been taken down for "maintenance" which "doesn't affect PSN on consoles, only the website you click through to from the password change email".

Nyleveia recommends securing your accounts now by creating a completely new email address - that you won't use anywhere else - and then attaching it to your PSN account.

In an update on the EU PlayStation forums, Sony said:

"Please note that PSN sign in is currently unavailable for the following services: PlayStation.com, PlayStation forums, PlayStation Blog, Qriocity.com, Music Unlimited via the web client, all PlayStation game title websites.

"Unfortunately this also means that those who are still trying to change their password via Playstation.com or Qriocity.com will be unable to do so for the time being. This is due to essential maintenance and at present it is unclear how long this will take.

"In the meantime you will still be able to sign into PSN via your PlayStation 3 and PSP devices to connect to game services and view Trophy/Friends information."

I changed mine online this morning.

I changed mine yesterday or the day before from the console now what?

This is ridiculous.

That's a bit stupid on Sonys part, they should have seen that. Not so much an 'exploit' as common sense. Once we all change our passwords the attackers can just go to 'forgot password' and put in the information needed to reset it again.

Just change your email address that's registered on PSN and that will be problem solved.

It's also massive over dramatising on the reporters behalf. It's not a 'new' exploit it's just 'I forgot my password' simples.

Ah. People seem to be going mad on Twitter with it being "hacked"

So should I change my e-mail or my password (again) or both?
