Gaming PlayStation 5

Anyone else waiting for the potential PS5 'Slim' release which is rumoured to be near?

Feel like now is the right time to finally get a PS5, but I'd potentially wait a few more months if it meant getting a newer version, even with the latest discount to the console.

Man why did I start Dysmantle….totally addicted.

I started this two days ago and I am constantly thinking about how it's literally just a basic gameplay loop of 'break this thing, get materials, invent this thing, you need to upgrade your weapon to break the next biggest thing, collect materials, etc..' and yet I played it until nearly 1am last night. Very confused and slightly hate myself.

I'm still going too, the map is huge and the game drip feeds the upgrades at just the perfect pace. So simple yet so addictive, bloody game.

If anyone has a spare beta code going for EU/UK it'd be appreciated.

Edit: Sorted, thanks!

Rumoured to be near but I doubt it'll be slim. My guess is around November time but will likely be slightly more expensive than the current discounted versions if you don't mind that.

The problem with the PS5 isn't its weight, it's the shape. It is a horrible-looking thing.

In other outdated takes, I just started playing Uncharted 4 and it's pretty good.

I don't particularly care what it looks like. My main gripe with it is that the fan is very loud. I find it so distracting I only game whilst using my voice cancelling headphones. If they can get the next console to quieten down it would be a huge upgrade.

That sounds more like a broken unit. The fan should be pretty much inaudible even under heavy load.

Man, Fort Solis looks incredible.

Roger Clark (Arthur Morgan from RDR2) is main voice cast on this. Made in Unreal 5 engine too.

The first chapter is floating around on YouTube right now prior to the August 22nd release.

First I've heard of this, looks interesting for sure!

Almost done with Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart. Stunning visuals, decent story, decent gameplay but I'm somewhat glad that it's over after about 10 hours as it is very repetitive.

Think I'll play Lost Legacy now before giving God of War a second go. I'd tried Forbidden West again but it didn't work for me this time either.

Mute PS5 beep sound. You can now mute or adjust the volume of the PS5’s beep sound when turning it on or off, or putting it in rest mode.

Go to [Settings] > [System] > [Beep Sound].
To adjust the beep sound volume, select [Volume].
To mute the beep sound, turn on [Mute Beep Sound].

megaton

I am disappointed to discover that this isn't yet in the settings for PS5. I'm assuming this is a beta change and will appear in a later system update for everyone?

Theres something odd about the Horizon games I can’t put my finger on. I’ve started both more than once, played for 5-10 hours, sort of enjoyed them then just got bored very quickly and put them down.

The wooden characters is a pretty big turn off tbh, they look plastic too half the time, their dialogue is on another level of cringe too.

However the gameplay is loads of fun imo and got me through it. Some of the storylines are great too and the scenery / visuals.

Basically just the characters are a bit dodgy imo

Absolutely loved R&C. Probably my favourite proper next gen title (haven’t played Elden Ring and GoW) this far.

I liked the first one. I think it's just too long, it doesn't have the story or the world to keep you interested for 30+ hours. With these story based games I prefer them to be in 10-15 hours range, or at most 20 hours (I think God of War, Spiderman and Last of Us 2 is around that) as it's basically a limit of how long I can keep myself engaged. Anything above that and I tend to have to force myself to push through.

There are very few games where I'm happy to spend more than 20 hours in that world. Tears of the Kingdom is basically the only one of recent years that worked for me in that regard, and that's largely because it isn't really a story based game, it's an exploration game more than anything these days and has the world to support that. The notion that we need more short(ish) games has been raised on Game Scoop podcast a few times and I tend to agree with it.

Started up FF16 today. Anyone played it? Opinion?

The headset chat in the sexbox thread got me thinking - why doesn't Sony have a haptic version of their headset? Imagine playing a shooter, pour example, and it rumbles every time you get shot in the face. Or you feel a slight jolt every time red batman lands on the ground. Surely one of the brainiacs at Sony Interactive Entertainment HQ has thought about this??

Doesn't the PSVR 2 headset have this?

That does sound very cool.

I'm the same. I played Forbidden West for quite a few hours, but got really bored of it and never went back. There's just so much stuff crammed in, and a lot of it is filler.

Fundamentally they're just Ubisoft style open world games, but done better than Ubisoft. Basically, a massive open world with loads of icons and side quests to clear up, most of them uninteresting, and a lot of padding and bloat. The gameplay is fun, but it can get very repetitive once you figure out the best way to take down the robots.

I got one of those internal ssd’s for this. Put it all back together and then when I turned it on there was no picture on the screen and the light was flashing blue. I googled it and basically my PS5 was dead. The best advice I could give anybody doing that is to remember to put the HDMI back in and save yourself the heart attack.

I once had an issue with my car... wouldn't start. Called the AA guy out who said the engine management computer was dead and needed replacing. Was being quoted £1500 for a second-hand one. My grandad who was a proper old school car guy, asked if he could take a look. "Grandad" said I "This is all a bit high tech for you, you know nothing about computers"

He lifted the bonnet, rummaged around, head down for 30 seconds and came up holding a loose wire

"reckon this needs to go somewhere" he said. Two minutes later he found a place on the engine where it should go and put it back into the socket. Engine started first time after that.

Their inzone headsets have haptics don't they?

Even then, I usually don't mind repetitive open world games, they're kind of comfy to
play when you just want something easy after work. I enjoyed AC Valhalla even though it was rubbish in many ways. So not sure why this one was different. It just felt like every game mechanic was clunky. Still hunting for another open world game I haven't tried.

Not sure how far you got in the game, but it can get very clunky when in combat. You have so many weapon and ammo types when you bring up that scroll wheel, that it can take you out of the game. Much like a lot of things in this game, it's just too much. You have different bows, spears, traps, etc. Then you have two or three different ammo types. It can get a bit crazy.

Horizon FW was a solid 8/10 game for me, with all that entails. Can't wait for the sequel, post Zelda and Elden Ring too

All these deals popping off is another sign that a new PS5 without a disc drive is about to come out.

It's annoying there's no calibration option on the PS5 to check it as well like you have on Switch.

Also why the feck is it so prone to drift. Annoying and impossible to play with once that happens.
I had never experienced stick drift before the PS5. I've now had 3 controllers get it. They have to be using worse quality parts or something.

I ended up sending one of mine into Uber Micro Repairs. The guy did a great job fixing it. Got it back in about a week.

I love both Horizon games. The setting is basically perfect for me. Zero Dawn has a better story, but Forbidden West has massively improved combat and animations. It does have some of that open world game bloat, but you're going to find it hard to find one that doesn't.

They've also renamed the PS5 on Amazon to "PlayStation 5 Standard Console" which suggests something new is coming.
