Gaming PlayStation 5

Question - ray tracing mode on my PS5 seems to stutter, like not even 30 fps it feels like 20 fps or less. Have I got some setting wrong (resolution etc)?

Edit - I've seen games on Ray tracing mode on YouTube and they're so much smoother than for me.

Is there a specific game you're talking about? I'd imagine that some ray tracing modes target 30fps but in reality struggle to keep that.

That used to be me. I was down to a mere 150 hours of destiny 2 this year, but since it launched I'm at least 3-4k hours I would think :o

Edit, that's across destiny 1 and 2 I should add.
5250 hours for me across both. I've played the absolute shit out of this series. The seasonal model has really started to feel boring to me. The new season came out last week and I can't find any motivation to play it. I've always been a grimoire/triumph grinder, but that grind every season has really take its toll.

Might still go back and play this season, but I need some more time playing other things. Getting off the hamster wheel for a while feels good at least.

My son asked me if I was interested in getting NBA 2K23 and had a look on the PSN store. The standard game was £54.99, whilst the digital deluxe version was £74.99.

Then I saw that you can get a bundle of NBA 2K23 andPGA Tour 2K23 for £44.99 – and it even includes the digital deluxe version of the game! Seems a crazy good price (especially when bought with a ShopTo card, so it only cost £40).

Just thought I would share in case anyone else is thinking of picking these up!

Yeah I picked it up for £4 a while back and was waiting for the update - apparently it's quite buggy though?

There was a review that came out that said it was but it's running okay for me on performance and looks amazing. Ray Tracing is fecked though.

I downloaded TW3 last night, more out of curiosity than with any intent to play fully, I still have GOW to finish and ME1,2,3 etc. Still, TW3 looks stunning ... on performance mode. The more games I see with RT / performance mode choices the more I'm bemused. What is the point of putting RT in there knowing full well it hampers performance. Makes no sense and the actual difference is negligable.

The only game I've been able to play on high graphics AND framerate is GOW: Ragnarok. No others.

Yeah, it was automatically on and I thought my game was broken due to how much it was stuttering while Geralt was trying to find the key in the opening scenes.

So I've been playing Returnal on/off for about two weeks. I fecking love the game but I honestly dont think Ill ever complete it.

Just getting to the 2nd boss in Crimson Wastes is exteremly difficult. And then trying to remember the 3 stage bosses' attack patterns is another layer of difficulty

Im 34, I just dont have the cognitive abilities!

If it helps I found the second half of the game easier. Make sure you’re using different weapons and upgrading them. Some are much better than other (the electropylon one decimates enemies and was probably my favourite).

Really want to get back to this at some point but so many games to get through.

Opppppph. Big oppph from me in regard to the Witcher 3's RT mode being a blurry mess plus running at what seems to be low-mid 20 fps for a decent part of the start is shocking.

@esmufc07 how you upgrade weapons? You find them in the world through drops?

I should clarify, I meant traits. When you pick a weapon you’ll see traits which you can unlock on that play through, if you unlock it it remains unlocked. So it’s always best to vary the weapons you play with.

I don't understand RT mode on these consoles. They can't pull it off at all and I imagine nobody actually uses them. Yet it's shown as a supposed key feature.

Performance mode all the way. And yes TW3 looks glorious. What a game.

Yeah, agreed, it really isn’t a key feature. Just a key disappointment.

I'm pretty sure I’ll get into TW3 this time.

Just checked my PlayStation wrap up. Played way less than I did in 2021

374 hours played, 19 games played, 272 trophies (5 platinums),

Top 5 most played games:
  1. Horizon Forbidden West
  2. The Last Of Us Part 1
  3. Hitman 3
  4. Detroit: Become Human
  5. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Mine is going to be enormous.

Is what I thought when I was a kid.

But I do leave my console on pause / rest a fair bit

Have always loved these games, and played them a lot of PS5. It's so good that you can play every previous game in the updated game engine. Plus there is always lots of content added either from the developers or the community.

One of my favourite modes is the contracts mode, where there are some user-created contracts where you have to kill everyone on the entire level!

Hope it gets a PSVR2 patch. It's great on PSVR but it can be much better on the new kit.

I still don't understand why Xbox haven't come out with a new controller. The PS5 dual sense is the best part about this next gen. Playing games now without haptic feedback and dual sense seems unthinkable for me! It's a lovely bit of tech.

That’s the thing i picked PS5 over Xbox for tbh.

Microsoft were really stupid on this.

For me I was never going for Xbox but I just feel it's one of those things that's become an integral part of my experience. Cyberpunk combat for example would feel so lacking in weight without the different pressure adaptive triggers for different kind of games. Or Demon Souls excellent use of the controllers.

I think I speak for every Xbox gamer when I saw we really don't care about haptic feedback. If I wanted that sort of thing I'd buy a Hitachi Wand

Because you don't know how good it is. You're stuck with old gen tech.

Not much of a fan of controller either tbh. Find it a bit of a gimmick. I either dont notice it or find it annoying. The tech demo was cool, I'm sure it could be used well.
