Gaming PlayStation 5

Wait PS5 is going to be 825GB or 2TB? I realise their drive is the star of the show and likely to be expensive but that is going to fill up seriously quickly and I’m guessing any expansion drives are going to be via USB and not take advantage of bus speeds the internal drive has access to?

PS5 won’t take any old expansion drive unless you wanna play PS4 games. You’d need to buy M.2 SSDs. The ones that pass certification from Sony that is and these probably cost more than £100.

I would kill - KILL - for a new Dead Space game. I would just love a remaster of the first two, to be honest.
I don't even wanna think about it and get hype as the disappointment will crush me.

it's highly likely they'll use USB-C instead of USB-A this time which allows for much faster speeds, so external SSD's could be plugged in if people want to. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony release their own ones and slap a big price tag on 'em.

Be interesting for sure, 825gb really isn't enough assuming games are 100gb+. They'll need to find some workaround.

Regardless what USB version they use, it’s still going to be majorly bottlenecked in comparison to the internal drive.

This makes more sense, I assume they will have external M.2 connectors and market their own custom drives.

It will take USB-C drives which will be used to store the games you are not playing. 825GB, maybe ~600 minus the fluff should be enough for 5+ games. How many games do you play at one time?

Any time you want to copy another game in to play it, it'll be copying to a super fast SSD so it won't be a long wait. Go make a drink or snack.... and voila.

Midway through the generation I expect games will be 300-400GB.

Yeah, that's the thing with this SSD being small. I know they have workarounds in that you can choose to download just the single-player portion of a game without the multilayer, or vise versa, and the fact that they don't have to duplicate assets over and over (which will obviously save space). But COD is currently taking up 175GB on my PS4, and that's probably going to be standard (or a lot higher) in a year or two on next gen

But games designed for SSD no longer need to have multiple copies of assets. I guess it depends on how complex games end up becoming but current game sizes are the way they are due to duplication, expansions, and patching, among other things...

I mean I can see games being more than 100Gb sure.... but 300+? Not so sure...

I feel like Sony have put a degree of thought into it, but we'll see...

825GB is only there to put the price lower. If they start with a 2tb model then that’s £100 quid more.

And a lot of the people who play COD, Fifa etc basically the yearly sequels 825gb version will be enough.

Wait, people think game sizes will get smaller just because of SSD drives? What do you mean by "no longer need to have multiple copies of assets"?

Not pulling you up mate, I'm just curious what that means and where it has come from.

Cerny Road to PS5 or whatever it's called. They explain that there are multiple copies of assets in different areas of the disk (in Spiderman for example) to decrease the seek times of HDD (dependent on where you are on the disk) whereas on a SSD seek times are uniform so you only need the one copy. He obviously explains it better....

Yeah, Epic have talked about the multiple copies of assets and it was mentioned by Linus Tech Tips as well. They all said it was something developers are looking forwards to as a major improvement in next gen as they have got used to bloating the size of download due to repeating assets all across the disk to get around the slow read times on mechanical hard drives.

I reckon that will probably just equalise against having 4k assets but it sounds like there won't be a big increase in space taken in next-gen though from what they were saying.

Ahh, we are talking about the various makeshift cache techniques as one. I haven't seen him specifically talk about it, but I'm guessing the talk of extra copies of assets was how to easily explain it and basically say they won't need to reserve any extra space than they need. That's true, though games aren't going to get drastically smaller. They just won't be getting drastically bigger like this gen either, hence why the trade off is similar sized storage drives.

Developers have gotten increasingly lazy this gen with techniques and game sizes out of control. The buzz around not having to think about it anymore (at least on PS5) is more down to relief at not having to. Which is a good thing

Epic are the worst for un-optimised file sizes and ridiculous updates. But yeah, as above, they won't need to reserve as much of the SSD.

Can you explain what you mean because that doesn't sound like what Cerny is saying. He's having there are multiple copies of assets it most games to enable faster seek times

Watch Mark Cernys presentation. That's exactly what he's saying. There are multiple copies of assets in most games to pull that info faster from the HDD

Can’t wait for tomorrow I’m generally excited to watch the conference.

I wonder if they’ll announce the price.

The best part of Mark Cerny's presentation was about their custom I/O chip for PS5. If it can really do what he says it can do to deal with the I/O bottleneck, then PS5 is truly next-gen.

Isn't it when you see a character model it is loaded from that levels part of the HDD , whereas now if you see a character model anywhere in game it will be pulled from one copy of it on an SSD? So instead of having 30 copies of it on a HDD it is now only 1? That's how I understood it.

Its more the other assets in the game that are frequently used for example same type of textures, same type of trees, same type of houses etc etc. With HDD, you would have to duplicate those assets and pack them along with other assets you can see in a location in the game so that they can be read sequentially without having to perform too many seeks to get those assets from different physical locations in the HDD.

I’m assuming they’re going to be M.2 Pcie 3.0 or 4.0 drives. The 2 terabyte drives are about £350.00 on amazon so I doubt many will be upgrading anyway until the price goes doing even further on them and who knows when that’ll be.

Yeah, I used characters as a simple term really, easier for someone to visualise seeing the same NPC everywhere.

Any chance the leaked photos that have come out today are real? Or just more rubbish?

What pictures? Can't see anything on ResetEra so assume you're on about the placeholder Amazon price listings, which aren't really indicative of anything as there are dummy listings for both Sony and MS going back to 2016 and beyond.

Event is software only I think so I don't expect they will show PS5.

Fair enough, just been reading up on this and it’s interesting that they optimised load speeds at the expense of disk space for mechanical drives. Sounds like they could potentially see a huge reduction in installation sizes. I was expecting a Moore’s law type of growth generation upon generation. I imagine with the increase in texture sizes and complexity of games along with improvements in development engines allowing for the production of bigger game worlds, I imagine games will still be around 200GB.

The one that has been leaked today, I'm personally taking it as a pinch of salt. It does look pretty smart though as well as the concept trailer that went with it but guess we just have to wait and see tomorrow. Personally think if Sony don't unveil it tomorrow, it is no doubt going to get leaked somewhere.

I think it'll be just games. Marketing has been all about future of gaming on PS5. Hope I'm wrong though.

We getting a look at the console tonight or is it just software?
If not tonight I think we'll see it very soon. The event tonight is over an hour long so I can't see it being software only, but then if they do reveal the PS5 that might take the limelight over the games themselves. They'll have to reveal it soon before someone in the factories does.

Should I watch this? I don't want to spend money on a new console and I'm the type of person who just buys things on impulse and worries about which organ to sell later.
