Gaming PlayStation 5

I think not being able to offload PS5 games to an external drive is an odd decision. How hard would it be when someone tried to launch an offloaded game to just have a pop-up that says "you cannot play this game because it is not currently stored on your PS5 internal storage system. To play the game you must first transfer it to the internal storage of your PS5 (subject to available space)."

664GB should be enough for me, but I hope they’ve fixed an issue I had towards the end of PS4 where the storage would say I have 100gb space free but the system would not download any game updates because of the way PS4 would copy the game.

Really looking forward to playing Miles Morales.

The SSD has fixed that issue as far as I’m aware.

Which is the best vid to watch? Catching up now

Great stuff
  • Looking forward to the Dualsense - I'm a little skeptical of how well the features will be adopted after year 1, particularly by third-parties, and worry first-party devs may try to force it on us too much! But I'm looking forward to trying for myself - if it is actually revolutionary then Xbox will follow suit. It sounds like it's a general improvement on the DS4 (which was already a big improvement on the DS3) for general use which is the main thing for me.
  • To me, Backwards Compatibility seemed like an afterthought or checkbox from Sony, so it's great (on PS4 games only of course) is fantastic news. Especially with PS+ Collection which is great.
  • It's fecking huge and that is an issue for me as I'll have a Series X too - but it's quiet, and I'm happy for that to be the trade off. At least the digital edition is smaller.
  • UI looks nice, and definitely gives it a 'new' feel. People here liked the PS4 UI but it was terrible for inviting friends to a party or checking who's on and that definitely isn't gonna be the case on PS5.
  • Watching a friend picture-in-picture will be fun for some games, but I'd hope they open up the picture in picture for other stuff too (watching a streamer, or having a youtube video open)
  • I think cards / objectives could be interesting if they thought of ways to integrate user-generated content but I don't think they will. Jumping to different parts of games is cool though, as well as the Help videos since it saves you going and watching a YT guide.
  • Lack of quick resume is a shame for me, particularly in the first year when I'd be playing lots of backwards compat games (which don't load in under 10 seconds so it is definitely an issue). It will matter less with next gen games of course.
Do we know if TLOU 2 is gonna get a free patch and when mutliplayer comes? I haven't played it yet, and I absolutely loved the multiplayer on TLOU 1 - I remember playing with quite a few people here (@ArmandTamzarian I think??).

PiP is underrated and would be fantastic if utilised correctly.

I was one of the few people that used it on the Xbox One before they removed it!

If they open it up to just be any media app (that isn't another game), could be very cool I agree.

Pretty much as expected - great console, DualSense is surprisingly brilliant and the UI design is well received. Held back by it's relatively small SSD however, though I don't think this will really be an issue for most people unless you're somebody who likes all of your games installed on your console.

I delete the ones I'm not playing. Never had an issue on the PS4 except when Warzone got so bloated.

I barely played my og Xbox One for years, didn't have loads of old games installed, and still had issues with storage, mainly when the likes of Red Dead and WZ came around. The PS5 has about 150GB more usable storage? Might be enough to allieviate that, dunno.

Otherwise, the PS5 package is looking pretty good.

That's neither here nor there, though. While promising a glimpse of the future, Astro's Playroom is a gloriously old-fashioned thing at heart, a characterful, character-driven platformer that has been built to showcase a particular piece of hardware. So often that's where magic in video games happens, and that's most certainly the case here. On its own, this is a beautifully crafted, exquisitely paced and absolutely gorgeous 3D platformer. Combined with the hardware it's bundled on, it's something very special indeed - and one of the best launch titles I can remember in an age.

82 on metacritic with some very good scores and essential from eurogamer.

Pretty much the same way I see it. Can’t wait for November 19th!

I’m not personally fussed about the small SSD as I tend to just play 1-2 games at a time and delete them from the drive once I’m done playing them. 664GB is more than fine.

For anyone still on the hunt for a PS5 in the UK, Game are getting the odd ones back in still despite everything being listed as out of stock. Follow the steps below as described on stockinformer forum and you should be successful eventually. No guarantee of release day delivery but the best chance you have of being assured of getting one full stop.

https://www.stockinformer.co.uk/discuss-ps5-playstation-5-console-at-game

1. Installed CTG Plugin on Chrome for the auto clicker 2. Log in to Game account that is all set up with all your details (address, CC etc) 2. Go to the Game PS5 page you want 3. Remove the ?status=oos from the end of the URL, this will show the Preorder button as clickable 4. Set the auto clicker to 6000 (every 6 seconds), any less and the page will flag an error for too many clicks in a set amount of time. and set it clicking on the button link 5. Keep an eye on it as it clicks away trying to add it to your basket (I had this running on a separate browser on a second screen and just continued with my working day) 6. When it pops up with added to basked, speed your way through the checkout process and hope (the successful one I used paypal but had failures with both cr*dit card and paypal). Hope this helps.

Not sure if I’ll play Spider-Man with better frame rates or with ray tracing hmmm not a bad decision I need to make at all!

Battery life for dualsense.

results in the battery life averaging around six to seven hours on a full charge

I was able to get around 6–7 hours of playtime on a charge

seems to last between 5-7 hours

10 hours or so of gameplay on a single full charge of the DualSense controller while playing Spider-Man: Miles Morales, give or take. That number goes way down when playing a game like Astro’s Playroom

Can someone confirm on the use of the HDD? I thought it was confirmed (we spoke about it in here)

You can play backwards compat games from an external HDD, but won't benefit from increased load times or better res/frames. You can't play XSX/PS5 games because the games require the specific NVME SSD's that are in the consoles, but you could use it to store the game and transfer it to and from the console? (rather than download each time)

I think a lot of us in here said this was the plan. That is no longer true?

In my personal testing, I’ve found a full charge lasts around 10 to 13 hours, which is long enough so that you don’t need to charge it every day, but short enough that you will frequently find yourself running low on power if you don’t.

Not surprising it doesn't last as long when on a game like Playroom which uses the hell out of the new features.

Some reviewers on ResetEra:

Controller test to turning off 12 hours 43 minutes of solid playing - Expected
Yeah, this battery life is about what I got too.

Battery length doesn't bother me that much as I play for 2-3 hours anyway. At least it charges faster than the DS4.

DS4 was really poor for battery in my experience, so any improvement is great. 10 should be the minimum. If it hits that then I'm grand.

I assume it is USB C?

I'm sure that will be added soon

Yeah ds4 is terrible on battery

Astros Playroom at 82 metacritic and Spider-Man at 85. No doubt dark souls will be decent too, that’s not a bad start from a low key launch (in terms of games)

Astro is one I’m really excited to play now. Hopefully @Solius is intrigued enough so he has something to play

You can't not play Astro when it comes with the console and shows off the controller

You'd have to be a right fecking scrooge

Someone like Lambs maybe

@Redlambs is a miserable git

Considering I play more games than both of you combined, and I'm at least 4x better than you combined at them, I'm not a stonecutter.

Digital foundry review of Spider-Man...it looks brilliant. John is like a giddy school kid.

  • Very strong UI, quick, plus 4K/HDR
  • New system wide settings
  • Rest mode extraordinarily efficient using only 1.5w
  • Runs cooler than Series X
  • Very quiet
  • Has HDMI 2.1 but presently missing a few features, plus no 1440p output
  • Max power draw so far is Miles Morales at 200w (less than Gears 5 on XSX, and only slightly higher than God of War on PS4 Pro)
  • DualSense feels revolutionary
  • 3D audio interesting and additive, not a game changer
  • 667 GB of usable storage

First of all, similar to Series X, I think that noise is basically a non-issue with PlayStation 5. Close-up to the console, you can hear the slight whir of the fan, but in living room, office or bedroom conditions, this totally disappears into the ambient noise. Fan speeds (and thus noise) also seem remarkably consistent, and even ramping up power draw as much as I could with Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales in photo mode - and then leaving the console alone for an hour - PlayStation 5 continued to be just as cool and quiet. The thermal photography of the system under load is literally illuminating.

the whole rear of the unit is basically a big vent and temperatures hit around 50 Celsius max here, generally. The hottest point in the thermal photography comes in at 57 Celsius on the LAN port, but I think that's just the nature of metal conducting heat and not anything to worry about. All told then, job done: PlayStation 5 is larger than Xbox Series X, but it is also cooler. The key point is that the days of jet engine acoustics emanating from your Sony console are a thing of the past.
