Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

The thing I don't get is...why would developers and publishers release a normal PS4 version with 'considerable sacrifices' to performance when that is the console with potentially 40m customers. The new one will have a base of maybe 5m in the first year I would guess.

Sounds like we will just get games like usual but the PS4.5 version will have all the bells and whistles and better framerate/resolution

The games he mentioned were Sony exclusives like Deep down and God of War.

I doubt other publishers will just say feck the normal PS4. The games will be made for normal PS4 until the PS5 comes out. You just can't ignore 40m people.

Also @Alock1 this is a reaction to MS clearly. Your current consoles will run the same games. It is annoying that they doing this. But it seems like all three console manufacturers are heading this direction. Nintendo were the ones who started it.

I'd be lying if I said I would not buy this or the new Xbox. It's annoying because they should have released powerful consoles to start with.

Honestly, feck shelling out on an upgrade after just two years. And considering most games have been remastered as well, we have truly been conned.

Gonna just save for a quality PC I think.

Yeah I'm not really sure why people are upset with this news as it's not really going to make much difference for current PS4 owners

Happy with current performance from console games = stick with ps4
Want more = Buy the more powerful version

Just another option to have

feck off. I literally just bought a PS4 as I assumed this upgrade would be relatively meaningless. That's ridiculous if true.

They stated that the GPU is twice as powerful as standard PS4 and much faster.
I guess that's all relative. We will come back to this.
They did not say exactly how fast but that is was running at a higher clock speed while being much smaller than the original.
This is good. Makes me think its going to be more along the lines of the PS4 Slim rather than a PS4.5. The PS3 Slim helped save Sony in the last generation.
It will have a 4k blu ray player and will upscale games that are not natively 4k.
Pretty much what everyone was expecting on that front.
It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.
Forget the considerable sacrifices part, as that could mean anything. That these games play at all on the PS4 is interesting. In comparison, games made for he "new 3DS" do not play on the "old" 3DS.
Current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades by being played on the system and any benefits to older games would come via patch per game and per developer. When asked if this was going to happen the response was "Its a possibility but doubtful with the exception of a handful of games."
So, aside from being upscaled the 4k, current games do not get a performance boost from being played on the new system. I guess that's pretty much as you would expect.

I don't really think has he said much that we didn't already expect. Literally the only thing of interest he has said is that:

- Games made for the PS4K run on the PS4
- Games made for the PS4K don't run as well on the PS4.

As long as the improvements being talked about are those of loading times, slight increase in textures, visuals etc, I really dont care. That being said, if there is an obvious in degregation of quality for new PS4 games running on the PS4, I will be pissed off. Right now I am going into "don't panic" mode.

Hey, Sony

I'll be buying one. Want a PS4 for Bloodborne & Everybody's Golf anyway, so might as well get the one that can play 4K blu-rays to boot.

If I'm going to have to shell out for improved consoles every few years, may as well just bite the bullet and go down the PC route.

I used to love my PC. I just can't be fecked with it anymore. Chromebook, Android, PS4.

PC gaming.. PC gaming... Is it worth it.

Sounds pretty awesome but can see why most people will be pissed off. They need to have a decent trade in offer. I wonder which we will see first NX, PS4K or a new Xbox?

Yup, this is what is was alluding to in the versus thread a week or so ago... fcuk em, I won't be jumping onboard for annual/biannual upgrades, just like I'm not with phones, tablets, and every other unnecessarily iterated electronic device...

As long as there's no "PS4K exclusive" games and games running on a regular PS4 will have the same level of visuals and performance we see at present im not too worried. I doubt ill be getting one without a 4k TV to take full advantage in any case.

They can feck right off. If this is a sign for the trend in console gamin I'll spend the money on being up my PC every few years instead.

I literally just got a ps4 as well on the assumption its a one time investment for a good 5-10 years

Hate the idea of it... But i'll probably end up getting it. Then in another 3 years, the PS5 will be out. yay!

For several reasons I've put off/not been able to get a PS4, I was planning to get one by the end of the year so there being an upgraded version suits me fine.

However, I do understand the anger over this and I would feel the same way if I had already bought a PS4. The point with home consoles is you buy it and it just works, no fuss or hassle like with PC. Effectively the millions of PS4 owners will have a lesser experience for investing early in the console. I used to have the original xbox and I was very angry with Microsoft and developers stopped releasing games for it once the 360 came out, that pretty much caused me to buy a PS3 when the time was right. I don't think too many people will turn their backs on Sony but you shouldn't piss off the customers who already invested in your product.

Who knows, may be this could turn people towards PC gaming? Spend nearly £600 on consoles over the course of about 5 years or just spend a similar amount (obviously depends on a lot of things and could end up being a lot more if you want the very best) on a gaming machine and get top of the range right from the off which will last just as long.

I was looking at PS4s recently but I think I'm going to hold off at least until the new one comes out. Kind of shitty that this will turn the original PS4 into a potato.

Don't see the issue as long as there's no exclusives and PS4 games don't suffer. There probably will be but that will be some time away.

Sure some people are just pissed as they like having/must have the latest thing so it's annoying for them to fork out money.

I find it absolutely incredible that people believe there wont be exclusives. We're talking about a console that is twice as powerful, and people honestly think devs are only going to use it for upscaling to 4k?

They'll be a shit launch exclusive or two but at the same time devs will know that this won't reach high ownership for a few years so they're not going to risk sales yet.

Not like most people don't have an endless back log of games anyway

Bunch of feckers. I bought a PS4 last week, smug in the knowledge that it would be good to go for at least 4/5 years. If the likes of Sony and Microsoft are leaning towards 2/3 year cycles then I'm out. Might take it back and start looking into decent PCs.

I can't see their being any exclusives for this new console. Doesn't really make sense to miss out on 40m sales

Just in time for the PS5 to come out and piss on it chips then?

Agree with this.

Timed exclusive at an absolute stretch. Why would they cannibalise their own sales on the console where their audience has its most volume?

Graphic downscaling or previous gen ports - now that is where the differences will be seen over the first few years.

I also don't see the problem too much either. Probably because I was an early PS4 adopter so am closer to being able to somewhat justify another expense over others. However, that said, a PS4.5 would be following the iPhone product strategy of new iteration followed by upgraded version, then new iteration again. Sony already did it with the PS3 slim and it's a proven marketing exercise to ensure companies capture as much of their prospective market as possible while staying relevant until the time for a new range interation is needed.

Technology is advancing far quicker now than when previous consoles came out. Unfortunately that's the truth. The years of a consoles being up to date for 5 years or more are long gone. I would say.

How will this affect PSVR?
Is it worth using PSVR with the OG PS4?
Will there be a new PSVR for PS5?

There's a good chance I'll be cancelling my PSVR preorder too depending on the info between now and launch....
Edit: Possibly $1000+ for optimum PSVR.:lol::lol:

What tech exactly? Graphics? Considering the fact that we've been playing the same games for the last decade but with slightly shinier graphics I'm not sure that is a statement that goes hand in hand with console gaming. Maybe VR and 4K are the tech advances you are talking about? Ironically only a minority of console gamers are interested in that at this point in time so let's see how this pans out? I think it's a bad idea... they should have just made a stronger original console.

There won't be exclusives as such. The PS4 will be supported for a long time until most likely PS5 is out.

This is for people with 4KTVs and want more power. Sony need to boost 4K tv sales and the PlayStation brand is capable of doing that.

I think people need to stop worrying about performance downgrades. Just look at how games on PC developed for and this is similar. For PC you are developing for people with different types of hardware. This is how consoles are going.

To be fair we don't know do we? I think the pessimism/cynicism is warranted...

It's quite possible that PS4 users will end up with inferior possibly flawed experiences.

Also let's look at this way.

PS3 came out in 2006
PS4 came out in 2013
PS4.5 out in 2016/7

We all know last gen went on far too long. The PS4 should have been out in 2011 with its current specs.

And how much do you reckon the 'current spec' PS4 would have cost on release in 2011?

Not sure. But maybe £50-£100 more expensive. You would have also got two more years out of it. So not really a big deal.

Cost is not going to be an issue for people who want the latest hardware on release.
