Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

Sorry I saw the alert then forgot.

I'll have a look for some deals later but I gotta say I've not seen any recently. It being a requirement for online multiplayer on PS4 is probably responsible for that.

Why are the controllers still so expensive? XB1 controllers are around 30£ at the moment...

A friend of mine has now wrecked two. Right trigger went on both.

Yep, R2. You can remove R1 and do a clean if it's sticking. I have done it a couple of times.

I reckon you are in the minority, most appear to have had some kind of an issue with the controllers

I'm glad I'm in the minority too... but seriously, first signs of trouble I'm going to give Sony a good rinsing until they replace it, because it's not right...

Ah I see, you are thinking people are saying the end of consoles down to sales and all that.

No, that's not why they will eventually stop. As I've said, that's down to infrastructure.
If PS now is a huge hit that could end up being the end of consoles in the future i guess?

This is the weird shit I was referring to earlier. It's difficult enough in terms of latency to do normal games now in most places, with VR it's impossible, yet Sony is about to push VR. Who the feck knows? Facebook payed far more for Occulus than Sony paid for Gaikai (although the server costs there are going through the roof).

If there's no console for regular games, the VR stuff could be more dedicated hardware and really free up the funds to research it. Best of both worlds.

The concept behind consoles right now and what has made them popular in the first place will never go away, and that concept is simply accessibility for the majority. Plus, as long as kids and teenagers exist and have parents that are never going to get in the habit of dropping out 1200 odd on a gaming PC, consoles will always exists.

Bloody hell, that was a long queue and I got there 90 minutes early! Anyway......

Couldn't get Killzone as they had already sold out by the time I got to the front of the queue, will have it on Monday.

And this is what you get in the box. If you ordered a Killzone pack it's a hard copy not a download like XBone seems to be doing.

I also ordered a red DS4 for Monday.

CMON!

EDIT: It's done!

I remember this night, it was a pain in the arse. I got it quite early around 10pm or so the night before launch and where I was living at the time I didn't have my own net connection, it was Wi-Fi included in the rent of the apartment that required a webpage to logon to get access. With the PS3 and the Vita that was not a problem, you simply opened the browser stuck in the details and then could connect to the PSN. Not with the PS4, oh no, you couldn't open the browser without being signed into PSN - chicken and fecking egg. To do that update I tethered it via that blue cable to my laptop and it started working. Pain in the hole. Is it still like that? Must cause hell in certain university dorms or hotels.

Not necessarily. The concept behind consoles right now and what has made them popular in the first place will never go away, and that concept is simply accessibility for the majority. Consoles will eventually not exist. As I've stated repeatedly, this generation is already a step closer. Sony and MS can't wait for it.

The whole concept of PlayStation Now is that it will be as simple as selecting an App on your TV just the same as you launch Netflix.

Yeah, but isn't PS Plus more dedicated to old legacy games than anything? I could be wrong.

Not in the long term plan, no! You'll see the business model for it tomorrow (Europe), but they've spent a lot of money on it - there are server boards with 8 PS3s per board, Cell has been re-engineered down to 28nm for it and will also go into a new PS3 revision.

Is anyone else expecting a God of War announcement at E3? Santa Monica hinted at it a few days ago:

Oh right. Still though, that opens the debate that not everybody has the ridiculous internet speeds that would be needed to stream modern games. Things are changing in the console world alright, but that doesn't mean that the average gamer will be able to afford it. Physical copies will still need to exist.

Well, nobody is predicting the death of consoles now, just at the end of the current cycle, so in 6 years. If I had to stick my neck out, PS5 is in development because A) VR, B) Nobody knows if the infrastructure will be there for most people in 5 years time. Sony will not place all of their eggs in one basket. If anything it would be expected to ship less physical console units (down to the traditional 30-40m before the PS1 appeared) with the rest going to something like PS Now. PS5 will probably be the last physical console.

That's exactly the point. However physical copies certainly won't always exist, remember the rumours before this generation? That didn't come from nothing.

That depends how long they can eek the life out of these machines I suppose.

That depends on how they handle it. Look at the state of online only games such as MAG. Servers were cut off yonks ago yet certain retails are still selling it - it doesn't fecking work anymore. So, unless these companies want a shitstorm from the EU, they will have to change their business and distributions models. You can't sell something at €60+ with a fixed time of operation unless it's clearly stated on the packaging, same with digital titles. What happens when they remove them and you want to re-download? It's a minefield.

We are yet to see the full effects of the likes of Steam.
