Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

I'm tempted to buy Infamous for my step-dads PS4. How do you guys think it'd fare on the VITA though? Would mostly play it over remote play.

I'd never bother doing it with shooters because of the analogue sticks but think that Infamous would be a game more forgiving of them.

Wow, what a wonderful technical analysis. You really need to get over it..... there is NOTHING outside of Kinect that an XBone can do better than a PS4. Do developers make the wrong choices sometimes? Yes! However, if you want to state something as you have, at least use a decent source for the claim.

I wondered.. for all the talk about MS asking developers to have parity between the PS4 and Xbox One - are Sony pushing for 1080p on the PS4?

This and COD are the two noticable examples where at the same resolution the PS4 version would clearly run smoother and have better frame rate. But they run at higher resolutions, and you have to wonder whether that's the developers choice or Sonys?

I understand it perfectly if it is Sony.. the internet goes crazy over these resolution shit storms. It's an easy opportunity for them.

I wish Titanfall wasn't Microsoft exclusive, Destiny can't come soon enough now. I just hope the UFC game turns out in some way decent, although now it's made by EA...

Just a follow up on that reviewer. GAF posted a thread about that article and within 10 minutes they had dug up the guys profile and pointed out he got banned for comments on Titanfall and fanboys.

I mean seriously, I don't think you can count on the games media to do their jobs anymore. So many of them either have agendas, are fanboy driven, blind, shit on their readers, glorified bloggers and pretty much all of them are angling for jobs within games studios. I mean its always been terrible anyway but the launch of these new consoles seems to have kicked them into overdrive and I just avoid reading them now, can probably count on one hand guys with opinions that I could semi-trust.

I don't get how, in modern gen, they can get away with not making a game like Thief open world... I did not have high hopes for it when i looked at preview vids months ago and The City looked sparsely populated, apart from guards, and citizens you did come across had no reaction to some guy cloaked and daggered sneaking through the dark.

Well, these consoles should be capable of 1080p don't you think? If XB1 could hit that consistently I'm sure they'd be pushing it too instead of all this 'does it really matter?' shite. So yes, IMO Sony should be pushing it. On PS4 the majority of titles are coming in at 1080p right? So for any game not hitting that we need to look at what's going on graphically, to see why they have compromised or to see where they failed.

In the two examples you highlight it seems like failure, as by most accounts the lower res/XB1 version has had it's issues too.

Agreed - this is perhaps the area that I would like to see improved most of all. As one of the previews mentioned - there is little suspense in breaking into houses that never have anyone living there.

No they are not, Battlefield runs at 900p. The framerate is entirely up to the developer, Xbox one is dropping frames as well, even at 720p most of the games are not locked there and do go below. There are not many PS4 games going below 30fps at 1080p, the question that should be asked is whether those games that don't hit 60fps constantly should be locked at 30fps (needs never to drop below 30) or done at a lower resolution to lock at 60fps (needs never to drop below 60) or left to float around between 30 and 60.

The reason why they don't lock at 30fps is probably due to controller response, as most game engines will poll the controller once every rendered frame. If you don't want screen tearing and can't always hit say 30fps and you double buffer, your framerate drops to 15fps, or 60 will drop to 30. Triple buffering can solve that problem, but if not handled right can cause judder, thus the G-Sync adaptive framerate displays that nVidia are now pushing.

I'll gladly explain the limitations of double buffering and how triple buffering can solve that problem if you wish.

Nah I doubt it. I think Thief just looks like a case of a badly developed game. Guerrilla have Killzone running at a locked 30 (sp) and there's much more going on graphically in that game than Thief. I haven't noticed any slowdown in the 4/5 hours of AC4 I've played the last couple days either. Thief doesn't seem to look good or run well on either console, I'd chalk it up to the troubled development cycle rather than some mandate from Sony.

The author of that article is getting slaughtered anyway, maybe a tad biased...

Loads of modern stealth games aren't open world to be fair mate.

Infact, the best ones probably aren't. The new Splinter Cell, Hitman and also Dishonoured were 3 fantastic stealth games last year and none were open world.

Santa Monica has cancelled one project and laid off 50 employees apparently.

Shit news following on from Irrational games.

SCEA can confirm that we have completed a reduction in workforce at Santa Monica Studio. This is a result of a cycle of resource re-alignment against priority growth areas within SCE WWS. We do not take these decisions lightly. However, sometimes it is necessary to make changes to better serve the future projects of the studio. We have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease transition for those impacted.

I don't know why every freaking game has to be open world now, it's ruining racers.

As for Thief, I doubt it'd be an issue if it wasn't shit regardless.

Well, we have GT and Forza which satisfy for no open world shit, same with f1 games and the rally ones.

I think in action, adventure etc open world adds loads. Otherwise you're being guided constantly which makes it feel too simple/restrictive.

I don't mind it in action adventures(though some, like Uncharted are great despite being very corridor), but it seems to be in everything now.

I don't much like GT or Forza, tbh, I'm more into arcade racers(and kart ones), though I think Alock recommended a Forza to me that was more arcade-y than usual, but I can't remember what it was. The Vita Need For Speed bugs the hell out of me being open word, despite everything else about it being good, and it ruined Burnout(badly need a re-release/port of Takedown).

I didn't think it could make that much difference to them, as you're still racing a course, but there you go...

Forza Horizon Earthquake! It's open world though.. so maybe not.

It's not the best racer ever but it's good. I got it for like £6 from the online sale though so I guess I would have been more forgiving of it.

It's not as arcade as the likes of NFS though.. That reminds me, have you, or anybody else played Rivals yet? I loved Most Wanted but I lovefilm'd it - not sure Rivals is worth buying, not for more than £15 anyway and it'll probably be quite some time before it hits that on Xbox One.

Forza Horizon is really good, it has fun online gameplay too. Cat and Mouse is awesome!

For sure.. unfortunately we struggled to get games going of King of the Hill and the other fun modes.

I've not seen the new Spinter Cell or Dishonoured by even though Hitman is not open world i'm sure it's levels are not on the rails linear like Thief appears to be.

Not to mention that those games require stealth. Seems that in Thief whilst in someone's house, nobody is about. You get passed a few stupid A.I guards and every house is occupied like the city has gone on a mass evacuation.

I hope Rivals is good, I have it but haven't played it yet. It looked good...

Not necessarily bad news (unless you're an employee), teams tend to get bloated over time, and projects get scrapped all the time.

SSM is a strange studio in that it has its fingers in a lot of different pies at the same time. It has it's own internal projects and then assists a lot of others in a supporting role - The Order 1886 being just one. Another example is them having to send a group over to Japan to get The Last Guardian out of a hole. Laying off 50 people could mean anything - they were well over 200 before this.

Some of those who left were influential God of War devs tho. Lead combat and stuff like that.

Some talented people lost their job and a new IP got cancelled.

Well there's 2 ways we can look at it... we can assume they know what they're doing and put it down to restructuring. Or we can scream 'oh noes!!11' and wait for their demise... I'll go with the former.

Hitman was average, Dishonoured was good and Splinter Cell was excellent.

Right so fifa finally downloaded but it's on my brothers account. On the Same ps4 when I try to start it on my account it says I don't have the license for it and I need to buy it. Surely you dont need to buy it twice for the same console?

Whoever's account you bought it on, make sure they activate that PS4 as their PS4. Then content they buy will be available to all users... cant remember how to do it though :p
