PS1/PS2 games heading to PlayStation 4

Source: titles running under emulation, HD visual enhancements in development.

Backwards compatibility is coming to PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Now is only part of the story. A well-placed source working with Sony's streaming service reveals that only PlayStation 3 titles are currently scheduled to use the "gameplay over IP" cloud service. PS1 and PS2 titles are set to follow the more conventional route of running locally under emulation on Sony's latest console - but with the possibility of HD visual enhancements.

While Sony effectively phased out hardware emulation of previous platforms during the early stages of the PS3 era, it has worked consistently on opening up the PlayStation back catalogue to publishers via software emulation and PSN downloads. Internally, PlayStation 3's firmware contains emulators for PS1, PS2 and even the handheld PSP, while Vita is capable of running PS1 and Vita titles virtually flawlessly using the same technology. In short, there's a proven codebase that can only get better for the vastly more powerful PS4.

Our information suggests that the same internal emulator strategy is planned for PlayStation 4, and we understand that Sony is actively pursuing the ability for older titles to run without the blurry upscaling seen on PS3, suggesting that native HD resolutions are being targeted. Assuming this intention carries through to final code, we'll be seeing an effect similar to the resolution scaling seen on unofficial PC emulation of Sony's consoles, as well as a great many of the "HD remasters" we saw on PS3 - where original assets were rendered at a higher resolution, often without any actual remastering at all.

Sony's use of emulation as opposed to PlayStation Now streaming is an interesting decision - and the right one for enthusiast gamers. Running code locally provides a superior experience in terms of both input latency and image quality, and owing to the bandwidth requirements of continuous gameplay streaming, a single download could actually work out better economically for the platform holder. However, anything that can be run on PS3 can also operate on the PlayStation Now servers, so theoretically there is no technical reason why PS1, PS2 and PSP titles running on the existing, upscaling PS3 emulators couldn't be added to the streaming service should Sony see fit - though HD resolution scaling would most likely be off the table in those circumstances.

Well it makes sense, PS1 and PS2 hardware is no longer in production, so there is no chance of them building server racks of those things for PS Now, it would have to be dealt with by PCs or PS3s doing the emulation (they will use PCs I'd expect for giving the PS1 and PS2 titles to the different range of devices that PS Now is supposed to support - mobiles, tablets, TVs, etc.), best just to stick the emulators they already have directly into the PS4 firmware. PS4 doesn't have the bandwidth problems that PS3 had in terms of emulating the PS2.

That's disappointing.

Sony can't do anything about it. The DVD licence is not theirs, so they have to conform to it to have the licence - ask the DVD consortium why this is. The Blu-Ray licence is not theirs either (although they have been the biggest shover of it), and they have to conform to that as well. With Blu-Ray it's a bit different though as many of the publishers never locked the discs (but some did). It's technically illegal to make a device that is region free.

They're available everywhere in Asia, ex Japan

Any news when they'll be adding media capabilities to the PS4?

I'm about to jump in this weekend too Freak. Doesn't seem to be many problems with the console itself, besides the lack of features (media player, external HDD stuff).

I think I'm gonna try grabbing a ps4 (maybe with killzone) and pick a copy of fifa up as I will play that online, can wait and pick up Assassins Creed as I just story mode the shit out of it, will wait till it's a bit cheaper I think. Don't think there is much else I want at the moment, really would have loved a GT for the launch but obviously it wasn't to be.

Knack doesn't look like my type of game. NFS bit too expensive for what it is too imo. Think I'd like to go through single player battlefield too, prob COD too, but again, too expensive for me seeing as I don't really enjoy getting sniped to bits online on them so I only play story mode in general. Even used prices of games are pretty high tbh.

Already ordered some of those orb grips for the pad.

They're pretty sweet, beyond the protection.

Those that already own a ps4, do you keep and use your ps3 as well or have you sold it off?

I use it more than I use my PS4 right now with PS+ titles and media capability.

PS+ keeps the PS3 ticking over and its a better blu-ray player right now.

My pad sticks are fecked already. The design is utter wank if they wear out after a month. Just ordered some of those grips, shouldn't have had to though, my ps3 ones lasted about 8 years.

Yeah mine are fine too, its gotta be either a certain holding style/play style wears them away or its a faulty batch. Either way they should be looking to fix it.

I've been using my ps3 for us netflix and for playing mp4 files haven't played a ps3 or xbox 360 game since I got ps4 at launch

my controllers are fine too

What I don't like about it is that what's new bit only shows what people are doing on the PS4 but not what they have done over the entire Playstation eco-system. If I for example do something on the PS3 or PS VITA it doesn't show!

I just don't see how it's happening unless people don't use the the base of their thumbs to touch the sticks, do people use the points of their thumbs to control the sticks? It's like this R1 and L1 thing people are going on about them sticking and they need to stick a knife in to remove dust or some other shit! My original DS4 that was bought with the system on the 28th November (2 months ago) has none of these issues. In fact, I don't even know which was the one that came with the PS4 and the one that was bought secondary.

Looking at it a little closer however, I can maybe see how it could happen. Take your DS4 and try to peel the embossed part of the stick from it. It's the form of it that probably allows this to happen under certain circumstances if people don't use it as I do.

It probably happens when you play on your PS4, rather than just talk about it.

Weaste given the number of reports I really doubt it has anything to do with usage patterns. People were reporting this issue a week after launch. It wasn't just people who'd been playing for 40 hours straight, normal usage was enough to cause the problem. My guess is there's a batch out there that is somehow susceptible to natural skin oils or some such. The thing was literally peeling away after two weeks in many cases. It's not that everyone except you has no idea how to hold a controller, it's that Sony have a manufacturing issue with the DS4.

Like you, I've had absolutely no issues with mine. But that doesn't mean everyone else is using the points of their thumbs or any other ridiculous situation.

I've just completed a 2nd play through of last of us. I will probably play the dlc for this next month and then I am selling the console. All my games apart from that are gone

Just seen a golf game is coming to next gen, both consoles and the PC, "The Golf Club" ... could be fun, especially if the crowd is big enough for it, as you can create your own courses, so I expect remakes of a lot of real courses which aren't always included in Tiger Woods.

Best be some decent K Club and Fota Island clones made, oh, and Troon Monument, that place is awesome, and only shows up on Woods sometimes.

Wouldn't mind trying to build my local course into it, but it's only 9 hole.

Yeah I was thinking the same, any one of the 3 courses in my town would be fun to play in a game!

I'm hopeful it will be good, but not expecting it to be anything great judging by the studios other releases.
