Man of the Match was either Phil or Barthez - he was outstanding in the second half especially.

My man of the match = Phil Neville! He was outstanding in the first half, and very good in the second.

Why is it that when we win in the last minute we're lucky.
When Arsenal win in the last minute it's because of great spirit and a fighting determination.
I know we didn't win in the last minute today but i've just been listening to that Arsehole McLintock on Sky's Soccer Saturday.

That's the real Barthez. That's why those who say he's just a good shot-stopper are wrong.

I just notice that some people here who are always keen to slagg him off (even when he's not at fault) don't say anything when he does well...

yea he had a great game

but do you think he will keep that up every game of the season? and if he does then he wont have anyone slagging him will he

He would, I'm sure of that. Anyway in 2000 he finished with the best defence so he can do it and he must be keen to make forget his bad season.

giggsy was crap
van nistelrooy was not half the player he was last season
veron and beckham tried to hard to play long passes and failing 90% of the time
butt was good
phil was good barthez was excelent
ole was his usual self
rio and oshea were ok and so was silvestre

we should try to play a short, quick, direct passing that we used to do instead of hoofing the ball into the air too often...won't work

trying those spectacular long passes looks good when it is successful, but 9 out of 10 it will end up with the defenders of the opponents...

fergie needs to sort this out...especially with beckham and veron....they're trying to hard to find those killer long passes

Rio looked very nervous today. I'm not convinced he and Barthez are quite on the same wave-length. Fab did save him when he rushed 30 yards from goal and tackled the Spurs player before side-stepping another, though. :D

Becks and Veron try consistently to play the long ball. This is one of the reasons Becks can't play in the middle on a regular basis.

We need to get the ball down and play a greater mixture of short and long passes.

One good thing from today's game was that Bartez seemed back to his best - what a relief!!

I agree Phil Neville had a good game however he is not good enough to hold onto his place.

I actually think Ruud is in a developing stage... he's starting to try creating more... not always working, but I think this is a good thing, and will pay off eventually.

I agree, he developing as a player, in the same way that Andy Cole did when he arrived. Rudd was an out and out goal scorer but he's now more of a team player which can only be good in the long run. Andy Cole was the same.
Other teams have had players who are out and out goal scorers but poor team players and won nothing. Look at Chelsea with Jimmy Piggybank. A player who will score 30+ a season is great but unless he can set up goals as well you risk becomming very one dimensional

I would mainly agree on the above ratings with the execption of Veron
Veron 5 Absolute rubbish today (IMO)
Instead of trying the long ball he should maybe push up field another 20-30 yard and play the ball through to the strikers

Barthez today reminded me of The Monk in the movie "The Mean Machine" ;)

Good game. Could have been better.

Barthez 8, Phil 8, Rio 6.5, O'Shea 7, Silvestre 7, Beckham 5, Giggs, 5, Veron 6.5, Butt, 7, van Nistelrooy 6.5, Solskjaer 7

Hope the lads would play better next time :)

Not sure why. ;)

Barthez 8: steady and secure
P.Neville 7: stable
O'Shea 7: stable
Rio 6.5: horrible mistake in 2nd half
Silverstre 7: stable
Becks 7: all over the field, and generally good contribution though nothing spectacular.
Butt 7: stable, good tackling, but sometimes hold on the ball too much
Veron 6: same old veron
Giggs 6.5: one or two good passes and that's all
Ruud 6.5: where was the killer striker last season?
Ole 7.5: good work. earn us the penalty.

What does Phil Neville have to do to get some credit from some posters on this forum? Apart from Phil`s out of character grumbling this year about maybe having to look elsewhere for games, the man has been a rock solid loyal Red for years.

I believe he is a much better player than some people think and the injuries to other players have given him the chance to show what he is made of. As Sir Alex noted, Phil is versatile and has suffered from that because he has been unable to make one position his own.

But he is a Red through and through (like his brother) and deserves our support despite some stereotyping of his abiities. It is a little bit like the Andy Cole is/was shite myth because he doesn`t put away all of the great chances he made for himself. Forget about a few penalties conceded and be thankful we have such a loyal and versatile player.

I agree with your genreal point, phil has been a good servant to the club but he has more ordinary games than good games. The problem was he came on to the scene along with Becks and friends and he got compared to them. He's not quite in the same category as that. He's a good squad player but not a player who would be straight on to the starting list.

The only good points of the game that I see were :

- Giggsy at least created some chances ... He has 3 great chances at least ... Ole blew it twice and RVN once ... We need these opportunities to at least try some shot ...
- Barthez ... gosh he's brilliant !! ...especially that out-rushed one to tackle the ball from Keane's legs ... without using HANDS !! :D
- Pugh ! ... he did looks great isn't he ? ... I think we need players like him to give the 1st team some push ... Once his confidence is built, I hope he's those that like to take on opponents' fullbacks .. .

I agree with some things being said on here, im not sure that Veron deserves the bashing he is getting and Solskjaer wasnt great, id go more like this;

Barthez 8 - one of his best games in a united shirt
P Neville 8 - Was all over the place, great performance.
M.Silvestre 7 - Looked solid did very well on the left, one of MUs most consistant players lately.
J.O'Shea 6 - Was there, pretty inconspicious.
R.Ferdinand 6 - Like O'Shea with the exception of his gaffe.
D.Beckham 5 - Was crap, did nothing constructive.
R.Giggs 6 - Only occasionally showed flashes of skill, pretty quiet.
J.Veron 6 - Tried too hard to impress but top marks for effort.
N.Butt 7 - Looked solid in midfield, ever reliable
RVN 7 - Looked dangerous at times, still looks like he needs a creative partner.
O.Solskjaer 7 - Looked good at times, othertimes faded away, also needs a creative partner.

Barthez- 8
Silvestre- 7
Rio- 6.5
O'Shea- 6.5
P.Neville- 7.5
Giggs- 6.5
Veron- 6
Butt- 7
Beckham- 6
Ole- 7
RVN- 6.5

been excellent in his last three matches..

so thats..two fingers up at the fans who wanted never to see him in a united shirt again!

i cant belive you guys give veron an average of 6. Surely he deserves around a 7.5. His work ethic was fantastic and he is our only midfielder who can pull off the through balls and long balls. give the guy a break.

Give me a break, where were those thru balls? Why I cannot see them? .... Oh sorry, I know what you mean. It's because all our forwards were too foolish to read his passes, so all his thru passes has been wasted. ;)

Sorry, don't agree about Pugh. I think he is just a Chadwick without dribbling skill.

Barthez 7
O`Shea 6
Rio 5
P.Neville 7
Silvestre 6
Butt 7
Veron 6
Becks 6
Giggs 6
RVN 6
OGS 6

average team performance

As a Barthez critic I'd better comment then I suppose. I watched the game this morning, fairly hungover so perhaps my judgement is somewhat impaired, but I though Barthez had a good game, but nothing special. He saved us with his outfield tackle (which could have gone horiibly wrong - I think I would have preferred him not to have rushed out like that) and the point blank save from Richards, although I felt that the ball was hit at him. He did what you expect of your keeper.

As for Veron, he was no worse than Beckham who I thought was very poor by his standards.

Veron in the right team is class eg Argentina Lazio but Man Utd he does just not fit in. With Keano and Scholes being out this was his big chance to prove himself as a top UTD player and he has just not taken the opportunity Bye Bye Seba :(

i cant helped but to notice his exasperated look when he came off. It spelt nothing less than "shit". :o

Let's keep things in perspective, Barthez made 2 good saves, the one he saved from Richards was hit straight at him. Barthez is a liability, re the Leeds match. Let's give this new guy whom we made such a fuss about purchasing a try. It is obvious that Barthez does not inform his defenders when he is coming off his line, remember Leeds last week when he tried to punch the ball even though Rio was clearing, remember Depotivio last season, Arsenal last season etc

Can you please explain how you give that shitebag Veron a higher rating than the young classy lad O'Shea.

feck off. Barthez saved us yesterday, you can't even recognize it. We're not last season, we're this season. And he'll do well.
Anyway Fergie will decide, not you.

Well... why is it, when Wanker says they can go through the season unbeaten it is great for the teamspirit and very clever move of the manager??
- And when SAF says it, it's 'arrogant'??
