Phil Jones

Just thought I'd post this in here as well, I keep hearing commentators and people in here saying that Jones played mainly as a centre back for Blackburn, this wasn't really the case, he played mostly in midfield as can be seen from the team sheets and match reports here:
Blackburn Rovers | Match | Fixtures & Results | First Team Fixtures & Results | 2010.

I really think that most of that analysis comes from his great debut against Drogba, after that Givet, Samba and Nelson were usually ahead of him at centre back, exclusively so under Allardyce.

Nah, he played most of the time there as a CB. He said couple of times that he played almost every game as a CB for blackburn, and that it was weird when he was playing in midfield one or two times, but he was ready to do that too. Something like that.

That's not what I've read. I posted about it already several pages back, he had more than twice as many games in midfield as CB. I've seen it from more than 1 source, though maybe they were wrong.

Some suggested that when he played in midfield he was playing such a defensive midfielder role that he was basically a 5th CB, so maybe that's where the difference of opinion comes from.

I wanna see him back in the middle for us soon, he was starting to shine there before his injury. Can't work out whether he should be a DM a AM or a Keano box to box midfielder. His drive, strenth and energy could be a help for us at times though.

He played in that pepe role for blackburn, my flatmate (blackburn fan) used to complain as he wanted him to play cb. He used do shit loads of horrendous long balls for them.

I looked, but I don't understand why did he say that he played mostly as a CB, and that he just played one or two games in midfield for them.

he had a run of 5/6 games playing midfield when they went uber defensive, especially the game against united at O.T when we done them 7?

Neway he definitely bossed it as a CB, but never looked that sharp as a DM.

Never seen a 18 year old defender bully drogba around as much as he did back then.

Smalling also had a very good game against chelsea, think that was the proof of the pudding when we wanted him.

Your all looking back as far as last season, he made his debut the season before that dont forget.

Maybe last year he played more as a dm, i cannot be sure.

But definitely his debut season he was a CB, and also in the reserves was a cb too.

Its a lot easier to shine as a physical CB at a club like Blackburn than at us. Just look at Samba - looks an absolute beast at times because he keeps winning aerial challenges, but his positioning is actually very suspect, just like Jones'. Difference is that Jones is still young enough to work that into his game.

At the moment I see him getting most chances at RB, and then probably some as a 3rd man in the middle if we go for that approach some games (which doesnt seem likely). Both Evans and Smalling have shown more for us at CB and seem to be ahead of Jones in the pecking order for that position.

Yeah, because they had an injury crisis, probably the reason he got his chance so early. When Samba, Givet and Nelson were all fit he was behind them in the pecking order.

Perhaps they did have injuries, but he still took his chance and did very well there.

If he wasnt a CB why would they play him there? why in the england u21 squad did he play CB with chris smalling as his partner?.

Neway i have no doubts wherever he plays he will be brilliant.

Young and learning, his impact this season has surpassed expectations, his level has fallen recently but that's to be expected of young players.

Think its a bit unfair on the lad to be playing him so regularly all over the place.

Fair point actually. He's a young player who is learning, but it can be quite hard for him to learn when he's all over the place. Still, it's quite hard for us to assign him to one position at the moment.

Reupped because the previous one is down.

has it??? i dont think so.

Ive heard he's the future club captain, future england captain, new roy keane, new nemanja vidic.

Othere than some good attacking displays at right back and some last ditch tackling and brave blocks i think he's been dissapointing. Very in fact.

Even at the start of the season when he was apparently in this rich vein of form he was poor. Look at his defending at centre half against chelsea and arsenal at home. he was dreadful. it was a good team performance but even torres looked good against him and scored and should have had two. he was at fault for the arsenal goals and penalty. Dreadful, absolutley appauling in every game in europe. Shockingly poor against newcastle. Anybody who thinks he's a midfielder should watch charlie adam (who is shite) bum him all over anfield and if still in doubt watch the first half against bilbao

His attitude is brilliant. very selfless, do anything for the team, play any where he's asked. comitted and determined.

His footballing ability technically and positionally is average at best. Roy Keane??? Nemanja Vidic?? he's got some serious improving to get to sheasy's level never mind those two

What are you on about he's almost played as many games for us as he had in 2 seasons at Blackburn. He's 20 and he's also got 4 England caps, if you expected all that before he came then fair enough, I don't know what you're on about in regards to his technical ability either, he's not a silky smooth midfielder but he's no slouch technically if you keep on mind some of his crosses and his winner at Villa Park. Just out of interest when was the last time you saw someone so young feature so prominently in our first team?

This is pathetic.

He had a fantastic start to the season but he has had a dip in form, nothing to worry about but the fact that I don't think he is ready to play CB andwe have Rafael, Fabio & Smalling capable of playing RB i don't think it would be a bad idea to take him out the team for a few weeks to give him a break & see how he does when he comes back.

I personally think jones has been fantastic this year, played about 4 different roles and always gave his heart and soul 100% effort.

Its amazing how high some people expect from kids!

I bet when scholes was 21 this guy was wondering why he was not playing like platini / van basten
