Phil Jones Future | Reports: Observing United academy sessions

I used to like him, he showed some promise after arriving. It wasn't for nothing that SAF fielded him 42 times in 11/12.

Then all that turned into disappointment. His injuries robbing him of his strengths and his inability to stay fit kept him from contributing in a meaningful way. On his returns he didn't look the part either.

But now I've gone full circle. He's excellent at winding up the muppets on here and I'm in favor of extending his contract so that can keep going on.
I agree, we should give him a 10 year contract with a “devilish clause” inserted which states that as long as it keeps annoying the muppets we keep extending

Should admins be involved in insulting posters?

Oh give over Dev, you’d swear he was taking it out of your pocket
He IS taking it out of our pockets if you contribute anything to Sky Sports, pay a membership fee or go to Old Trafford. The money's not coming from the Glazers is it?

That said it's absolutely not Phil Jones fault - and he was a very good player on his day and has won trophies deservedly. It's just an absolute embarrassment to the (former) management team that he was given a 5 year deal in 2019. Absolutely astonishing given both his injury record and level of ability at that time, and the picture of him with the smiling Solskjaer was the first "Oh feck actually maybe Ole doesn't have a clue what he's doing if he's had even the slightest say in this" moment for me.

He should have had his contract terminated with compensation after he failed to make our squad this season, and then given any and all the support he required to make a career elsewhere, through us or the PFA or whatever else.

People use it as a protective barrier around someone. Say Jones has mental health issues, and suddenly you can't criticize him.

And I am sorry, dealing with challenges in life, like injuries, isn't a mental health struggle, it's life.

Dealt with many of these challenges yourself? Must have since it's just "life".

How did you deal with the general public slagging you off when you left your house after those challenges?

Not sure, but I definitely didn't cry myself to sleep on a huge pile of cash, like Jones probably did.

But I am not even knocking Jones, he's a likeable guy, things didn't work out, some moron gave him a contract, what's he going to do, turn it down? What I have a problem with is people throwing the mental health label at everything now, because it basically ends the conversation, because people like you take it upon yourself to act morally superior in defense of a person that doesn't need it.

I don't curse him but let's stop this 'love the club' BS. If he loved us then he would have retired. That what players who truly loved their club would have done in his circumstances (ex van Basten)

So he is just an employee (and a rather shit one at that) who exploited an idiotic employer who gave him a contract extension he didn't deserve
Of course if you were offered a ton of money to stay in your job even though you weren't capable of doing it you'd turn it down would you?

It was so long ago when can longer recall: was it under José or Ole when Phil’s contract was extended?

I dont think Maguire will request a transfer, that makes for incredibly poor optics.

I also dont think you need to be especially "in the know" to figure out that Harry is currently surplus to requirements, and for a club thats looking to further reduce its wage bill, Maguire is an obvious candidate to recoup some funds that can be put back into the squad.

At the same time, the only person that can make Harry Maguire leave before his term is up, is Harry Maguire. He has however played well for England and will likely fancy himself a new destinaton ahead of next season. He can only retain his England squad spot if he actually plays football as a regular starter.
Not sure the last part is necessarily correct, he wasn't a regular starter and went to the WC

I think it's less about defending Jones, and more about being a better person and seeing the bigger picture. Jones has suffered from abuse, this is a fact, and we dont' know if he needs defending or not. I assume you are saying he doesn't because you think he sleeps on a pile of money every night.

I agree that’s what you’re suggesting in terms of support. Do t know why they didn’t suggest buying his contract out etc

just think the lad is taking dogs abuse for something that’s outside of his control

I feel bad for Jones and how his career went, but I am not going to lose sleep about it. Sure he didn't play week in week out and lift the trophy when we won thing at United, but he's been employed by them over a decade, pay an enormous amount of money, supported in every way by the club and backed by the majority of fans. It didn't go great, but have some perspective, he's lived a damn good life.

I have as much of an idea as you do about Phil Jones' mental state. But to just dismiss it outright because he got loads of money doesn't fly. As crazy as we have been extending contracts and going against online fan sentiment (e.g. not selling Rashford to some Championship team), the club isn't that stupid. Maybe we held up a promise to someone who was potentially a great player that we wanted to sign. A promise that said will have his back through thick and thin. Even if it doesn't work out as planned.

you've made a lot of assumptions, after telling me to not make any assumptions

:lol:It can tbf and people are weirdly entrenched on the subject. He was a good player and it's sad how his early promise was snuffed out by injuries.

The hate he gets is unnecessary though- blame the club not him if you deplore him having a contract.

There are very few people I hate in life. The only United people that goes into that category are the Glazers and Woodward. I certainly do not hate Phil Jones. The guy was given a silly contract which he signed and he had stuck to it. There's absolutely nothing to hate about that and many employees in his circumstances would have done the same. However let's be clear here. The relationship between Phil Jones and Manchester United is purely that between the typical employee and the typical (actually untypical IQ wise) employer. If Phil truly loved United then there were many alternatives he could have taken from retiring (Cantona did that when he felt that he might become a dead weight), taking a massive pay cut (ex what Tommasi did with Roma) or at least accepting a loan somewhere else. Players are paid a lot these days so Phil could have easily tanked that. Which is why I disagree with those United fans who go in great lengths to defend him.. They are treating the guy far better then he had treated the very club they claim to support.

That doesn't mean that I hate him. I wish him all the best and I hope that his injuries won't impact his standard of living going forward.

On a vaguely unrelated issue we need to acknowledge that United is not a bottomless well. Each decision taken carry consequences. This is less about Phil Jones who is on just 3.9m a year and more about high earners. A player whose earning an eye watering 18m+ a year must perform on a week to week basis. That is what high earners do. I am a big fan of DDG and I was a huge admirer of Veron (Lazio) and Sanchez (since his Udinese time). I remember spending one of my early dates with my then girlfriend (now wife), stuck in an internet cafe, to follow the latest transfer news about Veron. However if/once they became a burden to the club then I wanted/would want them out ASAP. It's within the club's interest that they are sold. I am a Manchester United supporter not this or that player's supporter.

Wait, aren't you a Juventus supporter?

Other than that, agree with everything you said.

The one thing I'm a little surprised (or not) is that how comes we haven't made better use of him or his experience?

I know it's a bit odd to have a current and 'playing' player to do things outside of playing duties but surely he could have done some coaching/mentoring for the youth teams or something like that?

I suppose it's a really strange circumstance where he's available to somehow play 1 or 2 games a season, so we can't write off his chances as a squad member but then also can't ask him to do anything else as it would unprofessional and not in his contract I guess. Having said that, he did do some punditry yesterday so surely it's not outside the realms of possibility.

When he leaves, I'm sure we'll all know what really has happened.

There's no secret.
The guy is made of glass and the baffoons at the club keep renewing his contract as they see him as an asset. If they don't renew his contract, we'd need another defender, which would cost around £35M. So, the decision-makers who know very little about football, keep renewing. No other club would pay wages to P.Jones.

Absolutely none of you would turn down a tenth of what you're expecting Jones to turn down.
Of course we wouldn't. But with that comes difference in treatment.
You have many examples where players refused to get paid while injured or even retired while under contract (lets see what Jones will do this summer).

If he did that then he would deserve respect and "oh poor guy, injuries and shit". But he decided to keep 15 mil while doing nothing in these 5 years. That was absolutely his right to do but then it is my right to call him a leecher. Which he is.
And lets not forget how he decided to not go on loan (while he was fit and 6th choice defender) which showed a lot about his desire to play football. And lets not forget also his interview where he said (not exact words); "feck you haters. I have money and you live in your mom's basement eating noodles.

So...yeah, feck Phil Jones.

the interview you are referencing was him responding to people sending him abuse on social media. I actually thought his response was pretty fair. I've no problem on footballers calling out those who send them horrible messages. It's one thing to critique a performance or rate a player but when its get abusive, I've no issues on them responding. Injuries have ruined his career, the club shouldn't have given him a new contract the last time.He probably should have went on loan that time to Bordeaux, but when contract runs down at Utd I expect him to retire.

“But — and I say this in the nicest possible way — I know who’ll have the last laugh.

“I’m proud of my career and when it finishes and I’m enjoying my life — and by the way I’m super fortunate that I’ll be able to do that, because footballers are fortunate — [the keyboard warriors] will still be in their mum’s spare bedroom, sipping Diet Pepsi that’s flat, eating a Pot Noodle, sitting in their boxers, tweeting.”

I just genuinely think those who have nasty aggressive things to say about him are most likely not the nicest of humans themselves, seemingly we have plenty of those on here sadly.

The man looks sick, such a shame.

I wonder if he has a serious illness that the club are keeping quiet.

If I recall correctly, it was signed during Ole's interim stint. The contract was probably mostly done before Ole even arrived and finalized after.

I'd like to preface my following remarks with the disclaimer that I do not hate Phil Jones and actually saw in him a potential United and England great (never a potential legend though). But something went seriously wrong with the management decision to award him the new contract when it was already known that he was injury prone.

If it's true that contract was mostly done before Ole arrived then it must have been mostly done when Jose was manager. Should we perhaps also put this fact in the "Jose was right." thread?

This post is pretending like your (or my) respect is supposed to be worth money to these players. Of course its not.

This is just making up arbitrary standards to fit your own version of whatever justice is to you.

Jones didnt go on loan because is received no asurances he would be a starter, and it was a loan which would take him away from his kids and family for a season just so he could potentially sit on the bench in France instead.

Contracts need to be respected in full. Regardless of fault from the club.

Phil Jones had better career than most players have. Played for biggest club in England, played for his country on World cup, won trophies and earned big money.
He had bad luck with injuries last 5 years. He didn't have some serious, life threating illness.

So, because i don't have much sympathy for him, i am a bad person? Great take. Thank you.

Mental health is just a blanket term that spans anything from BPD to a period of sombre mood and anything inbetween. A diagnosis of illness is somehing completely different obviously.

Last year Phil said this as part of a statement:

Jones added: "I think as a footballer, as a person, as a human being, that's the lowest I probably ever felt in my life. You try and get a balance between football and family life but it was so difficult going home and trying to look after the kids. You're there, but you're not there, you're not present. It's nice to get that balance back."

Yesterday, Phil had this to say:

"I have had to deal with that [the mental challenges] and I think I have. I have had a good support around me, my family, friends and especially the club. The club have been absolutely fantastic with me, I can't thank them enough and I am grateful for that.

No one will be surprised to know that Phil hasnt been simply "injured". He has faced social backlash from his local community for being injured. Online ridicule from petulent fans who wouldnt know how to behave like adults even if Tyson punched them in the mouth, constant setbacks during his injury recovery, new injuries, and a risk of having to call his career quits. Phil Jones has more money than anyone can dream of, but at that stage money is just a thing, it no longer impacts you the way it would you and me if we suddenly won £10m tomorrow. All it is is something he has that happens to pay for his things, food and bills. It in no way helps alleviate the struggles he has, it only allows him to focus on them.

I dont know what Jones actually means when he refers to mental struggles, but anyone who ha faced a period of hardship that has impacted them negatively can very likely relate

Side issue but you don't think Phil will be looking to earn as much as he possibly can once his United contract expires?

By his own words he's looking for a new contract with a different club, knowing full well he can't play anymore.

But back to main point, everyone has periods of hardship. I just think this has been conflated with mental health problems. Which only serves to confuse the issue of mental health. As you say, it can be a broad term, maybe its use needs a bit more thought.

Whilst his situation has been incredibly frustrating for fans, I've a suspicion it has been devastating for himself and his family.

I know some fans want to know all the details but we have to respect his right to privacy.

Good luck attracting top talent if you get a reputation for ditching players at the first sign of injury or a mental health issue.

We've seen other players with questionable commitment on the pitch in the last few years...not something that can be levelled at Phil.

feck all of you insulting a guy for daring to be injured. You've all watched him play. You know he never left anything but 100% of himself on the pitch every game he could. This is not laziness or selfishness or anything its a tragedy of a truly dedicated player's body failing him.

I mean, yeah? I don't know why you wouldn't?

If you've got nothing nice to say, don't say anything, or at least expect to get called out on just being a bit shitty.

Again RedCafe showing itself to having some truly just not very nice people on here. We should be positive right now, yet people still found time to get digs in at Phil fecking Jones of all people. It's bizarre.
