I posted this in the other thread. Don't just read that tweet. This gives more context to that tweet.

Just read that. What a terrible time he's had. Everyone who's given him stick the last couple of years owes him an apology. No feckin meniscus and he's still trying to give everything for the club.

Hope he can get back to his best this season.

He talked about not being able to walk for months at a time because of his injuries and how random people on the street used to scream abuse at him when he was out with his kids. Sounds like hell to me.
Screams of footballer under fire exaggerating for sympathy vote to me

Yes, it really is hard to believe that Phil Jones possibly could have been injured. Also remarkably hard to belive he might have been abused despite being mocked routinely for more than 5 years now.

Your posts scream unempthathic cnut to me.

Grow up. He's hardly been to hell because he's been injured and someone gobbed off once.

It’s a shame what happened to his career. He’s become a figure of ridicule and poster child for the highly paid bench warmer, but he was an exciting prospect when we signed him and people weren’t making big comparisons for no reason. It’s sad to read what he’s been through.

Did he hit a nerve;)
I won't call jones a moron but this part does sound a bit out of place and a bit stupid, the whole article until this part is jones trying to point out his hardships and trying to get anyone who reads it to empathize with his situation, he even pointed out just because he had money didn't mean he wasn't affected by criticism only to end the whole thing on i'll retire happy and rich but people criticizing me will always be poor losers is a bit of weird tone to take after trying to get readers to feel sad for him.

Feck me I saw this thread and thought he'd made the starting line up.

It's a shame regarding his injuries. Half of me thinks we should've moved him on, the other half is proud that as a club we've obviously decided to stand by someone going through an awful time. Either way, he certainly doesn't deserve any abuse hurled his way.

Too many footballers have their words crafted to fit a carefully confected image. The pot noodle comment is a bit Alan Partridge, but it's also genuinely Phil. Certainly, no PR person told him to say that.

It just showed the abuse really gets to him in my view. I think it was an over reaction for sure but to some real bad constant years long derision.

I feel for the guy. I think he trains and has the attitude of a top pro. His body has let him down.

Interesting that Rio still lives in his parents' basement.

I've seen enough players retire to believe that what Jones is saying is stupid. First of all sports is filled with retired stars who took a huge financial hit. These people tend to live a high standard of living and it only takes 2-3 bad investments for them to end up penniless. I can't see Jones being able to remain in football after his retirement (ex pundit or manager) especially considering that his reputation in the industry is mush. Even if he does manage to live a comfortable life, most former players long miss the love, fans use to show them when they used to play. I saw a recent interview from Baggio, whose probably the most introvert football player there is and yet he was quite fond of the fact that fans still send him piles of letters every week. That despite retiring in 2004. Jones is set to be remembered as the poster boy of failure and they will pass that experience to the younger generation. He himself knows that which is why he refused a testimonial match knowing very well that no one apart from friends and family would show up.

So we gave him a new contract knowing how bad his knee situation is and that he probably won't play at all? I'm sorry, but our club can't be a charity, we aren't a bottomless cash pit like the oil clubs.

I feel sympathy for him and yeah, maybe it's the right thing for the club to help him out find recovery, but why give him such a long contract? He is recovered now as he says, he should have left, he isn't needed, won't have the quality or fitness level to play any games for us at the top level.

Disgusted with some of the comments on this forum today regarding Phil Jones.

Good luck today PJ, might not be the best signing we have ever made but I hope for him and his family he can put the last 5 years behind him.

Jones and Varane - the partnership that was foretold 10 years ago :)

Bets on will he last whole game?
Will he get post game injury?

I give 3/1 that he will not finish the game and 10/1 that he will pick a knock for next game

This is huge for Phil, getting a start after so long, he must've worked really hard to get back to fitness.

remember some players never come back from injury and retire young, Sam McQueen of Southampton just retired a few days ago as a 26 yo (JWP & Luke Shaw's cohort at the Saints Academy), McQueen suffered a knee infection and after multiple surgeries and a long rehab his body couldn't even handle training sessions (he often gets muscle tears during training).

Hopefully Jones gets to play football and secures a move to a team where he gets to play regularly

Good luck to him tonight. That contract extension made feck all sense at the time and remains so to this day though.

He is basically a meme footballer at this point and any feck up on his part will be savaged.

Hope jones has a blinder, i watched a youtube video of his injury and it is a career ending injury and extremely painful one. He will suffer when he retires unless medical science can eventually print ligaments.

I hope he gets fit enough to play consistently. Still a better defender than Maguire

Thank feck Traore's on the bench. Was a nightmare last time we faced them.

Jones to score and get booked was 100/1 on skybet earlier

I‘m sure we’ll see him off the bench and then he’ll turn in his typical worldie performance against a big team, everyone’s like “we should buy him! He’s amazing!” and then he disappears back into obscurity for another 2-3 months and it starts all over again.

Very best of luck to him today hope he can get his career back on track tonight albeit away from United in future.

I sincerely wish Phil a good 90 minutes, so some other muppets will buy him tomorrow.

Never thought he was world class but he's never been awful. Certainly not much worse than Maguire and in a team that can score 2 goals a game, he'd be alright.
