Yup as usual there is a feckin stupid narrative that jones was getting lynched

If a Chelsea player done that to us today no goal. (I mean unsureness going for the initial ball or dropping off) Hazard was world class for that one moment today and that was the difference. Touch into space, body shape, crossed jones path and was 3 yards from goal what if jones just let him shoot. He had to make that tackle or at least attempt it.

One world class moment separated 2 teams who basically cancelled each other out for the rest of the game

Lunging in like that is something you'd be ashamed of in amateur football let alone an FA Cup final. He was caught flat footed by Hazard in the initial play, knew he'd screwed up, and in panic threw himself recklessly at a tackle he was never going to make. Not the first time and wont be the last with him. This season has been the final straw with me, i want him sold and will be disappointed if he is still here in September.

He actually makes 5 errors in one. Firstly he begins by backing away from the incoming long ball, presumably thinking of taking it down after it bounces. Then he realises Hazard is moving onto it and changes his mind. But instead of turning to run back towards goal, he squares himself up by turning the wrong way, meaning he’s now completely static as Hazars collects the ball. He gamely runs back, but takes the long way round to get on the inside, which is a double mistake because he’s so one footed that he always wants to make the tackle with his right foot and this would be easier from the outside, and it also takes him longer. The final coupe de grace is that of you watch it back Hazard does not at any stage draw his foot to shoot. He has no intention of shooting. He’s waiting for the tackle which Jones duly obliged with. An impossible tackle with the wrong foot. It was really something to behold.

Agree, Hazard's entire game is based around close control and drawing defenders in and moving the ball away. Jones should of backed DDG and slide blocked any shot.

Don’t disagree he is not top quality but it was hardly a lunge he had to make some tackle and attempt to block hazard would have scored that no problem

I think today should probably be his final game for Manchester United.
You can’t build a defence with a CB who does that in a Cup Final.
He’s not consistently fit enough to be a reliable squad option either.

Got to agree with this, it wasn’t even schoolboy defending, it was atrocious defending, something you wouldn’t even see park players doing.

Has critical errors in him, always had, not to mention his injury record is richer than Giggsy's medal cabinet.

He had ample opportunity to make the tackle outside the box, instead of waiting and then panicking when he realised he wasn't getting there. He was lucky the rules changed and it wasn't a red.

Besides, the last time Hazard was 1v1 with De Gea like that he saved it.

He’s awkward as feck sometimes isn’t he?

10 years ago Wes Brown was part of the United team as a powerful rightback - I’d like to see Jones reverted back there.

Phil Jones is anything but powerful. I can put a bet that he wont finish the game if he starts in RB.
And, Wes Brown was a natural defender and very strong, powerful defender, Jones is nowhere close.

Hazard had not settled enough yet to pull of a shot. Jones should have got there and tried to make it harder for Hazard, but not lunged in.

A good defender will realize that there is not much angle to shoot and just try to close the angle. It was ridiculous decision on his part to go down especially when Hazarad is already away by the time he made tackle.

But then Jones' defending has always been like that. So dint surprise me a bit.

Awful mistake but it doesn't take away how toothless we were today, didn't deserve anything today. People can make him the scapegoat but our problems run deeper.

Yeah, when i saw Hazard get in front of him i just knew what was coming.

Agree. It was 22' when Hazard scored. We hardly looked like scoring all game.

There was absolutely no need to make that challenge.. He was running Hazard narrower and narrower, have faith in the best GK in the world to make that save instead of guaranteeing a penalty and risking a red.

As Shearer said. everything always seems to be last ditch with him. terrible reader of the game
Throughout his time here he's earned a reputation for being brave because he throws himself in to last ditch tackles (and often gets injured as a result). Great defenders rarely need to do that. He's absolute bobbins and the fact he's lasted 7 seasons is symptomatic of the falling standards at this club.

He made a mistake that was costly today. Perhaps it shows you that we dont want him as our first choice CB against skillful and tricky forwards in important matches. Thats what I'm coming away from today thinking. So that I can totally understand

The posters who are saying to sell him, some even suggested firing him... That I cannot understand.

Not if you are fans of this football club.

Over the course of the season hes been our 2nd best CB. He hasnt been amazing but hes been fine. Ideally we'd have a better CB around to win the competition with him for his place in the team. But he'd still be a good backup. He's been better than our other CBs other than Smalling afterall so theres no logic to selling him before them.

So yeah for me a good season from Jones but a bad ending to it.

And hopefully we sign a player who makes him get to the next level or he wont start matches next season.

He was trying to get the ball.he had succeded before in last ditch tackles.

I think Southgate chose the wrong Man utd defender to his squad.

7 years and you are still hoping him to the next level? Here we are talking about potential again after he's making stupid mistake.

Yes of course. Any player at the football club, I would be fine with them going to the next level, impressing me and therefore me understanding why they are keeping a new signing out of the side.

Thats part of being a fan of the club.

The important part is we need that player coming in thats better than Jones, so that if he wants to play weekly he needs to outperform that player. And if he doesnt then he doesnt play and the club is fine either way.

"If I was a centre-forward playing against Phil Jones going into a game for 90 minutes, I would feel confident he would make at least one mistake in the game that I could pounce on,” the ex-Blackburn and Newcastle striker told the BBC.

"It's a last-ditch tackle, it's his mistake in the first place for letting [Hazard] get in there. But it is a genuine attempt."

Alan Shearer

Been at United 7 years time to move him on. Todays game was his entire United career in a nutshell.

Makes mistakes one which could have cost a goal and another that did, lucky not to get sent off and just to top it off gets injured.

How many people can honestly say that they weren't thinking. ' don't lunge, don't lunge , don't lunge" as Phil chased down hazard in the box. Was anyone surprised he did. The surprise would have been him staying on his feet.

I can't believe how he evades serious criticism on here. It's got to be one of the more baffling things about RedCafe. I reckon it's because so many hate Smalling and have defended Jones to make their point with Smalling, so can't face the reality of the situation.

But the reality is that he's crap and has a clanger in him every game. Today he had more than one and not for the first time this season. Smalling is a lot better than him defensively and Jones isn't even that good on the ball to make up for it. Southgate must have had his head in his hands over his decision if he watched today. I hope he's gone next season.

How long have we been saying that this cnut shouldn’t be playing for us? He still gets to dye his hair like a little girl and play at centre back for Manchester United. Wake me up when Phil jones has been moved to fecking Brentford.

Composure is his biggest weakness. Everything seems to be too hurried and panicky for Jones. United medical staff need to create a chill pill.

Or he could of stayed on his feet and taken two steps forward to block it. He lunged with the wrong foot too.
Think the whole problem was more his positioning when the pass was made.

He fits into the 'players that weren't good enough to play midfield' so turn them into CB. Sadly Scott will be also one of them too. Shearer was right (and I rarely agree with him), everything is last ditch and that's why he's always injured as ends up having to do something stupid like yesterday. I was surprised he didn't hurt himself in the way he tried to tackle Hazard....

Maybe he should be moved to DM, so his brainfart won't cost that much. It's the same with Bailly, until he's more matured.

Bailly yes, but Jones is woeful in there. His only real justifiable role in the squad after yesterday is at rightback.

I respect what he’s done and he’s always tried his best but I honestly can’t wait to see him out of the team, he’ll always give you those moments and we just need to move on and freshen things up back there.

We could have fielded that defence in 2011. That is embarrassing.

Feck me what a shambolic decision that was by Jones. First mistake is not attacking that first ball while being miles away from Hazard, but than that penalty was fecking pathetic. I knew he was gonna do something stupid as soon as he went after the attacker like a mad bull. He has a popcorn for a brain and frankly it's not even his problem anymore, it's the manager's for playing him after he has showed he is not to be relied upon.
