If this guy can stay fit for once he'll be an incredible player for us IMO. He has done brilliantly since coming back from the death - no more stupid sliding tackles (and faces :D), rash fouls or weird decision making. Just straight forward no-nonsense defending. Love it. I sometimes forget he's still only 24, it seems he's been around forever.

To be fair, it's not the first time hes been on an impressive run of games, those comparisons to Duncan Edwards did not pop out from nowhere. I can recall at least a couple of times in the past where has looked like the real deal when hes gotten a run of games, only for it to be ruined by injury

One thing that i find fascinating about his though, is how good he is on the head despite not really being that tall. Hes only 1,8m which is actually kinda short for a CB. Beast though

Has been brilliant. Looks like he is maturing nicely, looks very calm and assured, classy even. He is the footballing centerback that Stones thinks he is but is not.

Very happy for him. If he can stay injury free then he will live up to what we thought of him early on.

Nah, he's atleast 186cm. Reckon the wiki listing should've been updated a while ago.

Fair bit taller than Luke Shaw who's listed as 6'1" on his wiki entry, and Daley Blind who's supposed to be 180cm.

Even as a young player, he was as tall as 187cm John Terry:

Ah, ok thanks for clearing that up. I thought it was weird, because he looks tall enough, so i was surprised when he was listed as 1,8

What a likeable and no nonsense defender. Finally he can put a run of games together, i am very happy. There is something about Phil, he just oozes class.

I struggle to believe Luke Shaw is 6'1, heres a better pic to judge that....

He looks about 5'8 which makes his build all the more incredible. He must weigh about 17 stone.

Is Phil Jones the antithesis of the general rule that players become considered better and better then longer they stay injured?

He has been written off by some while he's been out - and not just on the basis of not being able to trust him to stay fit, but on ability too.

Yeah, Phil has totally won me over. I always respected his attitude, loyalty, fight and dedication, but it was natural to feel frustrated at how often he got injured. Even the management would have felt that.

He's one of those players who is probably more likely to get injured more often due to the way he plays the game - full on and very physical.

Been superb but like some players here, it's whether it's another false dawn or something sustainable. I guess it will depend on whether he stays fit or not. The other issue is CB's are all about partnerships and I've yet to see a natural one based on the compliment of what we have here?

What? No chance either. You could probably knock 5st off your guess really. Dan Carter was only between 14 and 15 stone throughout his career, I'd guess similar, and far more bulk. Similar with other Rugby players.

PS - Philly Jones, hero. Keep it on topic and all. Not sure if it's him and Rojo or pushing the midfield together or just well everything coming together quite nicely for Jose, but I'll run with it too.

.

I was only kidding but you've got to be joking about him being 12st if he's 6'1. I'm 5'9 (feck off @Grinner), a slight build and I'm close to 11st.

I thought the way he took Rondon completely out of the game was so impressive.

He's a much better reader of the game than he's given credit for and he's working very well in tandem with Rojo. Those two are one of the major positives to come out of this season.

Is Rondon candidate for the ballon d'or or something? I think he's pretty average as a striker who had a rather average career TBH.

I must admit- i dont know what Jose has done to Jones and Rojo (Jojo:p) but they have been very solid, imho best CB partnership in the last weeks.

Scary to think that Jones came back from a long term injury and many, me included, never wanted to.see Rojo in Unitedl shirt again.

He's a physical beast and he didn't get a whiff. Just like Kane, Benteke, Lukaku et all the last couple of weeks.

As others have already mentioned here and in the Rojo thread, it was great to see him jumping in to defend Rojo during the argie-bargie with Rondon (see what I did there?). It's good to see a proper partnership has emerged between them.

Ie Big and dumb strikers. There are better strikers around

I see you're determined to detract from Jones/Rojo as a CB pairing at all costs, which is within your right to do.

But that won't stop people stating that they've performed excellently, much better than we could realistically hope, for these weeks where our presumed first choice CB pairing has been injured.

No im trying to bring some perspective back to the argument. Rojo should be red carded in most of the games he played in. Jones did fairly well, there again you have to consider opposition and we all know he will soon fecks off in the treatment room.

Im happy they are doing bettet. However its silly to pin too much hopes on them considering how many times they let us down

On the jones-rojo side i dont think that our first teamers did enough to keep their place so first team cbs places are up for grabs

I feel confident when he is playing. Although Smalling is a good defender, he is poor on the ball and panics a lot. Jones on the other hand seems pretty assured on the ball.

Fair play to Jones it seems like he's really knuckled down this season and he's playing brilliant for us. Him and Rojo have formed a great partnership, hopefully Jones can stay clear of any injuries and he goes on to become the player we thought he was going to be.

How long is left on his current deal?

Good money pay as you play in my opinion, Circa 60k basic and another 60 for each game.

Been impressed with him since the Everton game last season. Thought there was a distinct improvement in his calmness and approach in that game, but unfortunately he didn't play after that.

To be fair, I think that Bailly is nailed on to come back as a first choice now that he's injury free.

He was always a good talent, it's just injuries have destroyed his career to this point, hopefully he can recover as he did look very impressive in the youth and Blackburn prior his move here.

He does very well as a sweeper, and has quite a decent turn of pace ball at his feet as well. I've seen him surge past 2,3 players very easily at times. The Duncan Edwards comparison were not as silly as some might think.

I am neither this player nor this player fan. If Jones (Im not mentioning Rojo, he's lucky not to see red twice) can carry on playing well, why replace him?

A request to the Admins @Damien @Raoul . Can someone please change that silly profile picture of him and replace it with a decent one? After these recent performances, he deserves at least that much respect.

I think given his bad luck with injuries and lack of regular playing time for years its safe to assume his development will have stalled. So although on paper he may be 24 in reality he is as developed as he would be at around 20/21 if he had played consistently. For that reason I think if he gets a good run of games he could keep improving and become a genuinely superb player. I don't know if fergie was drunk or whatever when he said he could go on to be the clubs greatest ever player or something, and I definitely don't think he will, but to get that level of praise suggests to me the potential he has shown in training, as well as in games means if he can stay injury free he really could be right up there in terms of best defenders in the league. Kind of like with RVP, injury injury injury so when he finally got a full season at about 28 he improved hugely, although he was always top class, and by the time he came to us the next season he was one of the best players in the world. I don't believe its a case of being a natural late bloomer but he just couldn't develop with the injuries. I hope the same can happen with jones.

As an aside, and its easily forgotten, Bailly and Blind were great together and I trust that partnership maybe just as much as Jones and Rojo. Who would have thought at the start of the season in our two best CB combinations smalling is in neither. Things move fast in football.
