PFA Premier League team of the year

Thiago should be out

City and Liverpool were neck to neck. Can be argued that Rodri had the better season but I wouldn't oppose placing Fabinho at DM either.

Rudiger is great, but his side conceded more goals than City/Liverpool. I think he at best is on the bench, making room for Matip or one of City's CBs.

Up front, Son not getting in is a travesty. Should be him and Salah as locks. Ronaldo/Mane/Kane fight in a no-holds-barred match to determine who takes the final spot.
My thoughts too. Thiago started fewer than half the games, it's not enough, despite his quality. In any case he's not shifting De Bruyne or Bernardo which are the spots he's competing for. Would certainly go Rodri.

Is it far-fetched to speculate that Son might not be very popular amongst other players? Can't think why else he'd be snubbed.

Surely you know that analysis is incredibly specialised to A) the player they’re likely to be up against and B) the specific role that they’re wanted to use in that game

You’re also assuming that most players actually watch this analysis, which going off what most recent ex pros say is often not the case.

So motd gives them more insight than this "incredibly specialised" analysis?

As to "most recent ex pros" who confessed to not watching this analysis, i.e., admitted they didn't do their job properly, got names and sources?

For striker I would pick Kane over CR7 because of his goal and assist output.
Penalty Kane this season.

No way Thiago should be in. Not the premier league but in the champ league final, he had a weak tame shot followed by an open header miss.

That, and also don't forget that most players don't watch many matches, unless they have to do it for a preparation before a game.

I highly doubt most players spend their weekends watching games for many hours, and then analyzing the quality of players.

Plus Song comes from South Korea, a country that is still considered exotic in Football , if he was brazilian, argentinian, french or german you can be sure he would be on the PFA team instead of Ronaldo or Mane.

In my opinion only

-Thiago doesn’t deserve to be in this team. As much as I love him, he played only 25 games and 1500 minutes which is considered not enough in term of participating. He should be replaced by one of them from Fabinho, Rodri or Rice.

- Mane, he’s another person that I really love so much but he should be replaced by Son Heung Min. Son scored 23 goals and didn’t have any single penalty that’s great performances from him. Howewer, he didn’t participate in Premier League team of the year and wasn’t dominated in players of the year. Asian racism is still continuing( I’m Asia too).

- 50/50 decision, Ronaldo could/should be replaced by Harry Kane but Ronaldo still has performed really well especially considering at his ages.

Is this real? Why the hell is this done in August?…

And if they’re going to put Kane AND Haaland in, they may as well just list GK, 4 or 5 defenders, 3 or 4 midfielders and 2 or 3 attackers. Which works. But having a formation makes little sense with Kane and Saliba in there in those positions. Looks daft. Is daft.

All that aside… insane midfield.

Yeah as a functioning team it makes no sense, I guess it’s more about the individuals than team cohesiveness.

And yeah that would be a great midfield

Yeah but they’re picking players out of position.

Saliba is absolutely one of the best defenders of the last year. But he’s not the best left back.

Kane didn’t play at Left wing at all.

Properly silly to lay out in a formation. Just list them as Keepers, Defenders, Midfielders and Forwards and it makes sense.

Bizarre admin there.

I agree with that, especially now when the individuals positions vary so much anyway, with teams playing different positions etc. would be easier just to categorise it like you outlined

From last season no?

How does Saka beat Haaland to Young player of the year
Yet in the same year same league same season Haaland beat Saka and others to PFA player of the year

To be fair, I think if a young player wins the main award, they shouldn’t be eligible for the young player award.

Wait what? Why did they wait so long to do it this time around? I thought these awards were usually around the end of the season.

Stupid timing, formation, message. Really daft across the board.

Do you guys realise that the previous times the voting happened in March? with 2 months of the season still to go. It never made sense to vote for players so far out of the season ending because there were usually many twists and turns. If for example the league ended in March last year, more Arsenal players would have got the nod because they were 5-8 points clear in March.

In 12/13 Bale took all the awards, but was he better an RVP across the whole season? I dont think so. What clinched it for Bale was that he scored in every game between end of January and begining of March so was at the fore front of peoples minds. In that same period, RVP had his mid season slump.

That had already changed in recent years though. The 2013 team of the year was announced in late April. The 2022 team was announced in June, after the end of the season but long before the start of the new season.

“announced” isnt when the actual votings happens.

That's not the point. The 2013 voting happened in March and was announced in April. A one-month lag. You can have voting take place at the very end of the season and still announce the results in June, which is in fact what happened in 2022.

I still prefer the voting to be post season. Its a season award, just do it after its done. Would you want the CL best player voted before the semis and final? Its the age of technology now, im sure they can get the votes to be done quickly in that last week of the season.

I would guess its hard to do it in the summer again because players and managers don't want to stick around for the awards?

Why don't they just announce it a week after the season or something?

Honestly without the names I don't know who half of them are. Can't have been that great a season if Foden was the best player though.

I mean he was good but he wasn't POTY standard in the supposed best league in the world...but then I can't think of anyone who was better.

Without the names you can't recognize half of the only team challenging City for 8 months, one of the best striker in the world, best DM in the world, one of the best CB in the world and 2 english internationals ?

Nope. Afraid not. I can pick out Haaland, Rodri, Foden, VVD, I think Watkins is in there?

Maybe you need to get some less boring looking players to challenge city with.
