Peterson, Harris, etc....

*Jordan Peterson still does this, often talking about the dangers of promiscuity.
I was told a stat indicating that HPV is now or soon will be the cause of more throat/mouth cancer than smoking.

I haven't verified said stat.

Of course, me being me, I can't turn down an opportunity to bang my "social media is bad mmkay" drum. Because I wonder if all the bad stuff you mention above (lack of job security, pensions, automation of factories etc etc) become a much bigger issue than they really are because people are so immersed in social media? When I was starting out my working life if someone lost their job, or had to relocate at short notice, or can't find affordable accommodation the only people who knew about these dramas would be friends and family. Nowadays we're constantly exposed to tweets, facebook posts and online think-pieces about how incredibly hard life is for young people. In case someone posts a load of stats about how hard life is, I get that these are all real issues but - as you say - there were real - albeit different - challenges faced by previous generations maybe avoided the hyperbole that surrounds them today.
I was listening to the Waking Up podcast a couple of months ago, Sam was speaking to Niall Ferguson who made what I thought was a really interesting point that I hadnt heard before. He was comparing the politics of today and the impact of social media with politics in the first half of the 19th Century and technological advances in printing presses. So in 1830 you have the first penny press newspapers which bring newspapers to the mass market and an explosion in political leaflets advocating all sorts of novel opinions. And then in 1848 you had political meltdown across Europe.

Really interesting similarities.

I think I listened to that same podcast. Ferguson is an interesting dude. Although I suspect his opinions will not go down well with many regular posters in this thread!

Funnily enough, I was listening to another podcast recently where I discovered an interesting dude whose views will be far more palatable to our resident marxists. He’s a Scottish writer/poet/hip hop artist called Loki (aka Darren McGarvey) Sometimes it feels like all the most interesting people on Youtube/Twitter/Podcasts etc are right wing conservatives so listening to him was a refreshing change. It’s an episode of Russel Brand’s Under The Skin podcast called “Class and Class War in The Age of Populism”. Well worth a listen.

Best exception for me is Mark Blyth. And Yanis Varoufakis of course.

I really struggle with Russel Brand though.

Yeah, I can't take him either. It was even worse than usual in this podcast because Loki was coming out with some great stuff but Brand kept talking over him and incorrectly paraphrasing what he was saying. I would pay good money for someone to edit the episode with all the Brand bits taken out.

Never heard of Mark Blyth. Will seek him out.

I have no idea what this means. Google just refers me to a Mexican hit man.
Oh!

Chapo trap house - It's a left wing/comedy/Steven Seagal tribute podcast. If you looking for good left wing podcasts it does'nt get any better than Chapo.

There's also a ton of other great stuff - philosophy tube, Contra Points, Mark Fisher, zero books, Novara media podcasts and of course everyone favourite problematic family member Zizek. A big issue is that YouTube algorithm favours more far right shit head content, I sure it's why Russell Brand has at times some good awful guests and video titles.

I don't think Chapo is for anybody outside pessimistic and angry leftists (which is why i love it).
Contra and maybe Shaun are left youtubers who should have much wider appeal. I agree with @Odegaard's suggestion of Three Arrows too, but he's a little dry sometimes.

Also hbomberguy’s Measured Response series...

...But less the stuff where paints himself blue and dissects the lore of sonic the hedgehog.

I'm not really into podcasts, find it hard to concentrate on the spoken rather than the written word. But would it be fair to say that they've kind of taken over from book-reading when it comes to politics?

I got into podcasts relatively recently. I listen to them while walking the dog. Not as a replacement for reading, but can be a good place to discover interesting people and then read their books.

I think either Shaun or Hbomb introduced me to Stefan Molyneux, and I will make sure everyone here suffers his tweets like I do.

Also I think I sold Contra short, her videos are a little better researched and much better produced than most youtubers.

I listen when doing work in the lab, away from the computer but with not much thought needed. I've read (i think) 3 books based on podcast interviews of their authors, but I'll admit that I've become much lazier wrt reading nowadays.

I had to basically stage an intervention to stop my wife’s cousin taking this cock womble seriously. He’s such a thunderous wanker (Molyneux, my wife’s cousin is a decent bloke) A genuinely poisonous piece of shit. Astonishing how easy it is to influence people if you can cobble together powepoint presentations full of “facts” and talk bollox about them on youtube.

Two good responses to his claims, if you need them.

Stefan is one of the absolute craziest people I've come across so far in my "political rabbit-hole". Can't fathom how people take him seriously.

How do I spell your name/tag you? Failed miserably here i think

I saw it. You have to use the letter ø, but that might be difficult. The simplest wayu is probably to copy/paste my name and removing a letter so the auto-filler shows my full name. Every now and then I search for odegaard to see if people have tried to tag me. :)

Saw Mark Blyth's name mentioned on the previous page, one of the few commentators who I think discusses economic policy in a truly honest way, not letting his biases get in the way.
