Paulinho set to trigger Premier League bidding war

A lot. The ones I mentioned above which is around 5-6. Then they have Parker, Huddlestone, Livermore and Falque. Am I missing anyone?

Typical Spurs really. Getting players they don't need instead of spending money on a top class striker

I have read a couple of articles which indicate they are in for a couple of strikers and that a mass clear out of the deadwood is in play this off season. So it will be an interesting summer for the Spurs fans. They are working on Villa next though.

There's also Tom Carroll who is supposedly very highly rated.

Yeah he looks quite good, almost a bit Spanish in his style. There's also Pritchcard (spl) if we are looking at youngsters

Why do you assume that Paulinho's arrival (if he signs) means that Spurs will be unable to sign a striker?

Just going by the last few seasons. You've needed a top striker for quite a while now but keep on spending the money on midfielders

I think its quite clear that AVB wants a striker but these things take time. We've been linked with quite a few strikers, Benteke, Damiao (can we just leave that one alone) Soldado and Villa being foremost amongst them.

But I think these kinds of deals are complicated and generally drawn out. And I think someone like Villa will want to look at all their options before jumping into a move.

If we're gonna go 4-3-3, its a good idea imo to have a goal scoring midfielder and some kind of playmaker, either in the central 3 or the attacking 3. Paulinho seems to be the first (from reports anyway, I haven't seen too much of him) and Bernard would be the other (Or Willian when we were going for him).

They've got Baldini in.

I hope for their sake they do the deals early this time. In previous seasons, Levy tried to act ultra smart and left everything until the last moment in order to save some money. I feel a striker in January would've meant qualification in CL for Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspur are in negotiations with Corinthians to sign Paulinho and talks are “well under way”.

The Brazil international has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs in recent weeks and is thought to be closing in on a £17m switch to White Hart Lane.
And Corinthians director of football Edu has revealed that an agreement between the two clubs is close to being reached.
The situation is well under way,” Edu told UOL.
“We have to agree on some details of the negotiation, so I can’t say he will leave yet, but the negotiations are good.”
The 24-year-old midfielder, who has also been linked with a switch to Real Madrid of late, has scored four goals in 15 appearances for the Brazilian national team.
Meanwhile, Spurs boss André Villas-Boas has once again insisted that the north London club have no intention of selling Gareth Bale this summer.
The talismanic Welshman has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane, with Manchester United and Real Madrid touted as possible destinations.
But Villas-Boas said: “We have the pledge of the chairman that Bale is not going to leave the club.”

That was my opinion as well. At the time I said "thats Spurs out of the CL then". Defoe and Adebayour isn't good enough for a team striving for Top 4. They're both squad players, not first team material.

He's said he will decide after the tournament if he wants to go to Spurs or not.

Who will be available from your midfield to buy? Huddle stone? Parker? Gylfi perhaps....?

If Paulinho signs for us then I'd say Livermore and Parker will definitely be up for sale, with Huddlestone a possibility (though personally I'd keep him). Gylfi I'd expect to stay.

Dembele will probably be allowed more freedom if they sign Paulinho and will roam freely in the final third quite a lot. He used to be a forward so should probably have a good eye for goal and might turn into a fine offensive midfielder. Moutinho would have probably fitted their midfield better than Paulinho but he was impossible to get this year.

Sounds like it's getting closer, so fingers crossed:

"The 24-year-old Corinthians midfielder is poised to become Andre Villas-Boas’ first signing of the summer as Spurs look to mount a challenge on the top four next term. Paulinho will complete his medical following Brazil’s participation in the Confederations Cup and today cited his joy at joining Villas-Boas’ side.

‘It’s a great pleasure to be linked to such a great club like Tottenham. ‘They have a reputation as one of the great clubs in England who play exciting, attacking football which suits my style.

‘I couldn't turn them down if they made it made me an offer. It would be a great pleasure to play for Tottenham."

According to reports AVB want to go back to 4-3-3 which was his favored formation for Porto

Midfield of Sandro-Dembele-Paulinho looks pretty strong on paper.

They need a good striker and a left back.

Both Sandro and Dembele are highly overrated really. Both decent players but not really top four quality. I think most of the Caf got over missing out on Dembele quite quickly last year.

Agree about Dembele but Sandro is very good.

Sandro would walk into the midfield of any team in the league. Dembele is overrated yes, but Sandro definitely isn't.

I don't buy this in the slightest.

What has Sandro done to earn this praise? Any midfield in the league? Who would you compare him to in terms of quality? I'm not one eyed - I can see talented Spurs players, as per my Bale praise last season, but I just don't see it with Sandro, and quite a few of my Spurs mates agree with me.

I've never seen anything in Sandro to warrant any kind of hype

Have you seen him play much? Or has anyone on here for that matter?

I'm just interested to know how he is defensively, as we seem to be after a box-to-box midfielder (due to Diaby being the unluckiest player out there). So I wonder if Paulinho could have potentially been a good fit.

The two Confed Cup games against Japan and Mexico, plus the recent friendly against England, are pretty much the only times I've seen him play. So I can't really comment on his defensive abilities, especially since Brazil don't exactly place that much emphasis on defending.

At Spurs he'd be playing alongside Sandro, who'd I'd expect to be taking the lion's share of defensive CM responsibilities, with Paulinho having more licence to go forward. I'd also imagine that Scolari would be pleased to see this partnership playing together regularly at club level in the run-up to the world cup.

Anyhow, if AVB is happy for Paulinho to come to Spurs - and if he's good enough to be in Brazil's favoured XI - then that's good enough for me to be going on with.

SAF was happy enough to sign Kleberson, and he was a world cup winning Brazilian Midfielder........

I've seen him a few times and he never stood out. Doesn't mean he's not good, I'm just surprised no CL club went after him, the fee Spurs are supposedly signing him for is not prohibitive, either.

Well he did have an amazing WC in 2002. Low profile but usually one of the best in the pitch, really.

Looking today, Paulinho is a great box to box. I would rather have him than Strootman, granted I've seen the brazilian more more than the dutchman who didn't impress me at all. But my muppet choice would be Hernanes.

I'd say the majority of Spurs fans see Sandro as perhaps our most important player apart from Bale. He's really good ... and that's why he's broken into Brazil's senior team and has even been their captain on occasion.

Is this the least appropriately titled thread in the transfer forum? The whole thing just seems to be about him going to Spurs, and nobody else seems interested!

What a ball to Neymar before the goal. He is so confortable on the ball.

I predicted a move to the Premier League and decided to spice my article up a bit. I thought it'd be obvious from the OP that it was sensationalism in extremis?

Called it right though so do one, you sad git.
