Paulinho prepared to leave Corinthians: Prem giants on watch

The much heralded Inho brand of footballers has suffered something of a identity crisis in recent years. Since the rise and decline of the oft times godlike Ronaldinho, much of their subsequent output has failed to live up to its billing as the most desirable suffix in global football. That is, until now.

£28m rated Paulinho of Corinthians is the latest model to roll off the renowned Brazilian production line, and through he the famous marque is set to be reignited.

Courted unsuccessfully for a number of years by Inter Milan, this classic box-to-box midfielder (likened by some as being an amalgamation of Wesley Sneijder and Roy Keane) is preparing himself for a big money move to the Premier League.

The Italian giants are still keen on the player, but view him as being unattainable due to his many rebuffs to their advances - with the player himself stating that his career should take priority over his finances. The Premier League's big boys though have been alerted to a change in attitude in the 24 year old and are set to lock horns in perhaps the summer's most engaging bidding war to secure the services of the latest, and potentially greatest Inho to date.

Chelsea and Manchester City are each in the hunt for replacing their ageing Frank Lampard and Yaya Toure respectively, and in terms of suitability Paulinho has spent the last three seasons in Brazil working as a ticker in a box factory. Manchester United meanwhile are desperate for midfield reinforcements as incoming manager David Moyes prepares to replace the deadwood there with shoots and leaves - it's said that unfavoured £8m man Anderson is keen on a move back to his homeland, with sources close to the Corinthians camp indicating that a possible player + cash exchange deal has been under heavy consideration.

Wherever he ends up this summer, you can be sure that, through Paulinho, the Inho brand is back in business and upping the stakes - so watch this space.

Transfer completed on SM and the thread pops up here. Cider

"inho" brand of footballers.

Just for my info, inho means "junior" or something, right? Like little Ronald (or
Ronald junior) = Ronaldinho?

Yeah, so let's get small Paul.

He's a funny case because he used to play in Poland for ŁKS Łódź about 4-5 years ago when they were relegated and was deemed not good enough to get an improved contract. He went to some hardly known Brazilian clubs and then Corinthians while ŁKS went down, got into financial trouble and was liquidated.

He's apparently very good. Inter and Arsenal have been keeping tabs on him for a while but he says he wants to stay in Brazil (just read an article).

This the guy that played against Chelsea in the Club World Cup? He looked a good player, I'd take him as a reliable squad player, don't think he's the answer to our problems but if we can't rely on Ando for games/minutes then there's no point him being at the club.

Looked good today, like the other 3 times i have seen him play. Seems to have bit of everything.
He supposed to be available for £15m.

Anyone watched him regularly?

Looks okay, scored a nice goal against England and scored again yesterday. Seen him a couple of times and not entirely sure what his best quality is, maybe he's a general all rounder

I'd like to see him at Spurs. A midfield three of Sandro, Paulinho and Dembele strikes me as formidable, flexible/inter-changeable and would suit AVB's preferred approach very well.

Sandro deep aren't Dembele and Paulinho similar box to box types you could do with a bit more technical class in there.

Well, maybe, but it would be a pretty mobile and fluidly interchangeable midfield 3, with a good deal of "presence" ... I'd see bossing them most midfield battles.

I agree but just to give it something different three types of midfielder a complete trio. Dembele has a tendency to let games pass him by almost like he doesn't know how good is he actually is. He should be demanding the ball more and trying to use his pace and power to make things happen from deep.

I agree with Jaffy, Spurs could use a technician in there to control games. Tom Carroll is the answer in my view. Him, Sandro and Dembele would be more balanced.

"Tottenham have agreed a £17million deal to bring Brazilian midfielder Paulinho to White Hart Lane, his club Corinthians have confirmed.
The 24-year-old will be Andre Villas-Boas' first signing of the summer as he looks to mount a challenge on the top four of the Premier League once again.

Paulinho is ahead of £30m Manchester City signing Fernandinho, 28, in the pecking for the Brazilian national side and Spurs are confident that they have signed the better player.

Spurs had been told earlier in the week they would have to up the ante on a bid for Paulinho, with the North London club originally hoping to pay in the region of £15m.

But with interest mounting in the player Spurs have decided to meet his release clause, which stands at £17m.
Paulinho, who scored Brazils equaliser against England in this months friendly, had said he will not make a decision until after the Confederations Cup

Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Roma are also interested in the 15-cap international, but Spurs look to have beaten them to the signature."

Hmmm .... no quotes in the article, just an assertion that "his club Corinthians have confirmed". Plus it's the Daily Mail. But we live in hope.

Based on very limited viewing(Brazil's friendly matches), he looks like a decent player. Although isn't he a bit similar to Sandro?

Some actual quotes now:

BREAKING - #Corinthians football manager Edu Gaspar confirms that #Paulinho talks with #THFC are going 'very well' and a deal is likely!

I think he is more of an all round midfielder, from what i've heard about and seen of him I would say he is more a complete midfielder than Sandro and would be in the "Lampard" mould

A good player but I don't know if that is what Spurs need. Very similar to Sandro. The trio of him, Sandro and Dembele will form a very tough midfield but our midgets (Thiago and Kagawa) would dominate them.

Looked pretty average to me in the limited games i've watched him in.

Does he play better when I'm not watching?

Well, the BBC's Tim Vickery reckons Paulinho is one of Brazil's best players. Said City should have bought him instead of Fernandinho and was surprised no-one in EPL has made a move for him until now.

There you are. Maybe I've just seen him on a few off days. As I said, I've seen little of him, but he's never impressed. Neither did Fernandinho, mind.

I guess we may well see what they're both like at close quarters next season.

Can't say I know anything about this fella. I'm surprised they're buying in another midfielder though, thats surely an area of the pitch where they're pretty well covered in. Although I assume that means one of if not both of Parker/Huddlestone will be off.

Is this one of those Caf classic examples where the guy's actually called Paul but Corinthians have added the inho to attract the bids?

I've said this a million times but I'll say it again - it's amazing that a player who wasn't even a regular for a relegation fodder in Polish league, ŁKS Łódź, mere 3 years ago is now a target for a host of major clubs. It really does show that some coaches are simply clueless when it comes to realising a superb talent, and it's a really great from zero to hero story.

According to reports AVB want to go back to 4-3-3 which was his favored formation for Porto

Midfield of Sandro-Dembele-Paulinho looks pretty strong on paper.

They need a good striker and a left back.

So Bale reverts back to the left wing role? He is devastating as a false 9/CAM though. So this might be the formation next season:

Defoe
Bale-------------------Lennon
Dembele----Paulinho
Sandro
Ekoto----Dawson----Vertonghen-----Walker

That leaves Dempsey, Sigurdsson and Holtby on the bench. I doubt that is going to happen. I think Dembele and Sandro are going to start with the same formation as last season and depending on form and injury Paulinho is going to come in.
