From the beeb:
"71 - After coming on after 60 mins, Paul Scholes made 71 passes (97% complete), more than any Man City player in the entire game. Comeback."

71 passes in 30 minutes. Without training. Just walking into the dressing room and out on the pitch.
Wait till he gets some days in training.

I don't think you loose your passing ability. Probably one of the last things to go.

Its his legs I'm worried about. Certainly can't see him playing in a two man midfield.

Whose confidence would be boosted by hearing that someone who hasn't been part of the preparation for the game is top option for the bench?

I can see why SAF wants his experience back, the team (include senior players like Evra, Rio and Rooney) are looking very young and naive at times but to bring him as a surprise option? Against City?

Basically it was just asking for us to look like we'd lost our nerve against a team that was a man down. It wasn't until they went down to 9, that we looked like we were keeping pace with them again.

Well we don't know how high a regard the dressing room hold him in, even now. I was very let down in the 2nd half by Rio, his decision making was horrible, Scholes did very little wrong except for the pass to Evra for Aguero's goal, I thought Scholes settled us down really well after City's 2nd goal. I don't get how bringing Scholes on is asking for us to look like we'd lost our nerve, it was tad arrogant if anything. We let City back in that game make no mistake, we controlled the ball but made too many bad decisions and got hit on the counter giving away stupid fouls and making errors, City did well to keep going but it was all self inflicted.

he must getting inspiration from Giggs to want to continue playing.

If it was purely the Glazers withholding money, why did we spend around £50 million in the summer on a goalkeeper, a centre half and another winger and not address the centre of midfield? Surely if Fergie only had £50 million to spend, and thought we had a midfield problem, he'd have used some of that money to address that issue?

The problem is not the fees but salaries. Young, Jones and De Gea would not hinder us in that terms especially when you consider that VDS, Scholes (ok he had returned now), OShea and Wes had left the club/retired

Fairly useless stat though, you have to admit. 99% of those passes were short ones under no pressure at all. He gave the ball away for their second goal and one of his long passes was picked out as well, which almost created a dangerous situation for City.

To be fair he wasn't closed down much but still .

The only thing I'm worried about is players running of him when we don't have the ball. The way Aguero ran straight past him was frightening.

He'll still be valuable this season when we need to keep the ball or when we've got plenty of time on the ball. So happy to have him back.

He was ironically vital in the last few minutes. Not sure he should have been on the pitch before that, but I was convinced Foy was going to manufacture a reason to send Nani off.

I love Paul Scholes.

Not useless.
Atleast him being on the pitch meant we kept the ball better instead of hoofing it forward to nobody.

That is true. He did well to keep it calm towards the end.

Just saying that the number of completed passes doesn't really tell the full story when one of the incomplete ones let to a goal and another incomplete one was in a dangerous position as well.

Seconded. I love Scholesy to bits, but I thought he took the right decision to retire last year.

I think he could do some filling in here and there for us. There was no need to bring in him at 58th minutein a game like this. We were doing pretty good.

Scholes and Giggs need to be used as luxury players for us IMO.

Play them if we have five in midfield (with attacking wingers) but not in a two man centre mid.

Knee-jerk reaction much
You're judging him on one game, in terrible conditions when he has had 7/8 months out of the game.

Does anyone think if Scholes wasn't playing today City would have got that third?

He was still playing those smart 1-2s in and round the centre ensuring we kept possession even if we couldn't score.

As great as it was to see him back, I can't quite believe SAF put him on today. 37 years old, no competitive football in 7 months...helluva gamble.

Indeed. People here don't seem to haver ever kicked a football, let alone play a football game. You can theorize as much as you want, but there is no one in this team besides Scholes who can control the game by just moving the ball around smartly. It takes more than good technique.

Hardly knee-jerk, I would've said the same before the game.

Scholesy was a great player but the PL is a tough league and we're not usually too dominant in midfield. All he has left is his phenomenal vision and passing ability. People forget that the Scholes of old was a lot more than just a great passer. But what he has left is not good enough in the PL. When we don't have the ball he's a liability, and we cannot afford one in an already weakish midfield.

It's a similar problem to having a striker who is only a goal poacher and doesn't help the buildup. It might be helpful having one when you're chasing a game and have a lot of possession but generally it creates a problem for the midfield.

He did well and it was nice to see him again but I think mistakes like the one he made are inevitable, people can talk about him not having games under his belt or no training but he was making that sort of mistake even last season. I actually thought he had hung up his boots at the right time.

Still got plenty to offer, excellent news for me. Wasn't really prepared to see him go at the end of last season, so I'm going to enjoy every minute that he plays the rest of the year.

I think if we are going to use him on a regular basis, he needs Jones and Carrick alongside him. He hasn't got the legs to play with just one other midfielder. Jones can do the donkey work with Carrick and Scholes can sit back and spray the passes around.

I think it's a boost on the training pitch too, it'll be great for the kids to train against him and to see how he carries himself on and off the pitch. If we do play him though, it must be as a deep lying playmaker in a midfield three, his legs aren't there anymore I feel.

I'm pretty sure had he not been there, we would have played the ball forward and lost posession several times or eventually conceded a hooffed ball from the defence. He was excellent bar the mistake for the second goal considering he 'retired' and hasn't played for 6 months.

He's still better and wiser than Anderson, Carrick Fletcher and Gibson. Says a lot about our midfield.

Better ball retention when Scholes came on today then we've probably managed most of the season.

Agree

We will get found out if he features as one of a midfield two

Not bad is he?

NOt trying to have a dig or something, but when a player, as fabolous and great Scholesy was, is playing in your CM after such a long time out with 37 years you know there is something terribly wrong in CM.

This, or Carrick/Anderson would have misplaced a pass in midfield, we wouldn't have had more retention and City would have had more chances.

We DO know there is something terribly wrong.
Fletch and Clev are missing.
Injuries are a terrible thing

Bit bemused at some of the reaction here, but oh well. Can't see how having Paul Scholes as an extra option in midfield, particularly after so many injuries there, is anything but good. Fergie never wanted him to retire, and it's been about six months since his last match - not exactly a sign of desperation is it, and he's not going to be played unless he's fit.

Scholes and Cleverley on at the same time = possession.

People need to understand that he's not going to be used as one of our first choice midfielders. He'll be a player who will be only used in very specific circumstances - either when we need to keep the ball when we're winning or if a team is sitting deep and we need someone to move the ball fast.

The more I think about it the more I like it, reminds me of Larsson's loan here.

Fletch/Carrick/Anderson I don't think any of them should be first choice . Great squad players but when the chips are down you aren't going to get much from em. Looks like we're going to be relying upon a 37 and 38 year old in midfield for a bit longer. What Scholes did today, no one was capable of today.
