I agree that if a player delivers the goods nobody questions the price tag. Look at Martial, so far he hasn't been a 50 mil player but he has been very good and people understand why we pay the money.

Can you really compare the difference between Kante and Pjanic with Kante and Pogba? That's a couple million £, not £80m. Not sure there are many who would have Pjanic over Kante anyways.So Kante cost more than Pjanic?
I don't want to derail the thread, though. I'm sure all of you will be delighted with Pogba and won't care about the fee, but that is an utterly mental price for a single player not named Messi, Ronaldo, or Neymar.

If Kante wasn't also French he'd hardly even be brought up. Pogba and Kante are completely different types of midfielders, and have a completely different status in world football. Pogba is a superstar, Kante is this summers Schneiderlin.
You're completely right but you're looking at it slightly incorrectly. Instead of considering the fee relative to other transfers at other clubs, you have to consider it relative to our income. Then it's not so mental.

We are signing one of the best young players in world football who can only get better, who is probably the most marketable player in the sport, has recently joined Adidas, playing in one of the world's strongest teams who don't want to sell him. Did you honestly expect the price to be similar to a player who 2 seasons ago was playing in Ligue 2, who no clubs seemed to be very interested in, playing for a team that will return to mediocrity in the future? Jose wants the player, United is swimming in cash, Juventus don't want to sell, it's only logical Juve would milk us for every cent they can.

Who are these world class players? We have been shopping in the okay department for midfielders for too long now, the standard of midfielders we need is in the Veratti/Pogba mould, both of which wouldn't be available for that price.

Just in recent years you've seen fantastic, top quality players like Costa, Sanchez, Hazard, Özil, De Bruyne, etc make high profile transfers for a fraction of what Pogba will cost. Is he really that much better than those players?
Have all that believe he'll just be off to Madrid in 3 years if he's any good explained how Real, who are struggling to pay the 100m Juve are asking now, will just stump up heaven knows what we'll be demanding given out outlay?

Costa isn't world class, Sanchez was unwanted at Barca, Hazard came from a seller club French team, Ozil was unwanted, De Bruyne was half the price from a team that accepted they had no option but to sell. Not to add, none of those players are "world class", whilst most of them occupy positions we don't need, none of them are a proper CM, nor are they half as marketable as Pogba.
No champions league and last few average seasons, that's what we are paying for.
Who gives a feck if we pay over the odds for a player of Pogba's quality. Madrid didn't seem to care much when they splashed £85M on Bale and look where he is now. Pogba is an excellent player and he's only 23. His potential is crazy.
