Ronaldo also happens at a time we were under serious financial strain. For example; if Martial became the best player in the world, I don't think Madrid would be able to afford him unless he ran down his contract.

Were we?

You could also argue that it came at a time, when we really were at our best, winning leagues and getting to finals for the Champs League, along with having fantastic players and an iconic manager.

We were never going to stop him going to Real.

I do feel more confident then ever that we can compete with Real, though for how long I don't know - they aren't a club that will be in someones shadow for long.

I wonder by year end if Pogba delivers the goods how many shirts he will sell. My three nephews are already dabbing all around the living room and pestering me for Pogba shirts. Feckers gonna rinse me. I suspect most United supporting kids aged 3-15 will be the same.
hehe, I am glad my Manchester United Supporting nephews are all grown up now so I don't need to buy them stuff any more. :D

Same here :) though remember to get one for yourself mate.

Just checked the website, shirts are nearly £70 with printing... football bloody hell.

Will be a RB, CM/CDM and someone to be the focal point of our attack, ala Griezmann imo.

I think rashford really could be that player, if he has a season where it gets to a point where he is making that impact, Jose may turn to rashford for that different kind of frontman

So like I said, Dave is probably 6'1/6'2 and Pogba is 6'3. De gea is clearly NOT taller than Pogba, so I am not sure what your both getting at
By all official accounts, Pogba is 191, while de gea is 192. It's not much, but your initial claim was that De Gea was a touch over 6 foot. It's obviously not true. He's just shorter than Smalling, as the picture proves. Your confidence, after being disproven, is rather hilarious

WTF are you talking about, there is a photo CLEARLY showing Pogba is taller than De Gea, but instead of using that as proof you would rather use some online stats page as gospel? :wenger:

So your saying De gea is smaller than Smalling but taller than Pogba, even though Pogba is arguably the same height as Smalling. Sorry that doesn't make sense.

I took a photo with my 6 year old cousin. I was crouching, she was standing. You couldn't see the bottom halves of our body. Her head was above mine. She's obviously taller than me, though.

Yes, I'll go by stats, rather than one fecking photo of two blokes' faces. Though if photos are your thing, do see the previous photo where De Gea, stood next to the 6'4 Smalling, looks an inch (if that) shorter.

There's no "arguably". It's their height. It doesn't change. You can't fecking argue with fact. What a pointless comment, I have no idea why I replied

You're a nutter, why would De Gea be crouching? Guess we shall find out on matchday

ever heard of stats being wrong or outdated? it isn't set in stone. I use my eyes and De Gea is clearly not 6'3.

From the body angle you can clearly see that de Gea is leaning more towards the side than Pogba is, thus making him appear shorter than Pogba.

I'd also be more inclined to believe the official stats than a single image where you can't tell if their legs are outstretched or not. It's a pointless discussion that should've ended with the official records of their respective heights being posted.

There was a poster who constantly appeared and moaned about this forum's obsession with height whenever such discussions took place... Hope he clicks on this thread soon.

Pogba is clearly doing a Ronaldo-esque toe stand. Practicing for his inevitable transfer to Real Madrid.

Sorry Makki I am not having that, leaning in slightly doesn't drop your height by 2 inches. Pogba is taller than De Gea all day long, I can't believe I am even having to defend it  who even cares seriously!

Our finances had no impact on Ronaldo leaving.

Buy them simple red shirts and write Pogba on the back of them with a white marker. :D

You don't know how much he leans in, and more importantly, you don't know if his legs are extended or not, because you can't see it. I can't believe you're willing to dispute all recorded stats because of one picture showing the upper parts of the torso and head

Who's taller?

Every time we have these arguments about a player height it's always the same.

People need to remember perspective.

Man Utd: Why £89m Paul Pogba deal is a bargain
By Simon Stone

  • Manchester United confirmed they had signed Paul Pogba at 00:35BST on Tuesday morning
Manchester United paid a world record £89m to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus - a player they let go for only £1.5m four years ago.

The deal has been cited as the final example of a sport gone money-mad, and described as former manager Sir Alex Ferguson's biggest mistake.

But with the Old Trafford club expected to announce annual revenues of £500m next month, paying such a huge sum for a world-class midfielder they used to own could make perfect business sense.

Because as a percentage of turnover, Pogba was a snip compared to the £155,000 purchase of Denis Law in 1962.

Why Pogba deal could make sense

Manchester United's major purchases as a percentage of their turnover
United's commercial success has underpinned a vast growth in income since the Glazer family took over the club in 2005. And with global stars Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahmovic added to a squad managed by Jose Mourinho, that will only increase.

"This is a new era on the field but commercially as well," said football business expert Kevin Roberts.

Wayne Rooney's arrival from Everton for £27m in 2004 represented 17.2% of the club's overall turnover of £157.2m a year before the Glazer family takeover. Twelve years on, the cost of buying Pogba from Juventus is a similar 17.6%.

Relative to the purchase of Law from Torino 54 years ago, and the £1.5m spent on buying Bryan Robson from West Brom in 1981, these percentages are small.

Scotsman Law cost 61.4% of United's annual turnover of £187,178. In Robson's case the figures are 56.6% and £2.65m.

A more compelling sponsorship pitch
From £49m in 2005, the club's commercial revenue rose to £196.9 in 2015, a rise of 301%. In the same period, United's matchday revenue has increased by 31% and their broadcast income by 123%.

United now operate a three tier system of sponsorship. The biggest deals are for shirt sponsorship and kit manufacturing. The second level are the global agreements with organisations such as EA Sports, who on Wednesday became United's official football video games partner, the third are regional deals which cover all manner of product areas, from financial services, to tyres and noodles.

"If you are flogging sponsorship to Japanese noodle companies you really need to mean something to fans in a country that is 14 hours away on a plane," said Roberts, co-founder of Sport Business.

"Manchester United's digital strategy allows them to collect massive amounts of data which can be used to sell to fans things directly to do with the club. Simplistically, it might be to ask whether people had thought about buying a new shirt for their birthday.

"If you have data about people watching you worldwide, you can put together a more compelling pitch to sponsors and ratchet up the value of deals."

United's carefully choreographed and branded announcement of the Pogba deal was as glossy as a multi-million pound advertising campaign, marking a new level in the evolution of the modern-day football transfer.

"The thing we focus on is engagement," added United's managing director Richard Arnold. "The content and communication we have with the fans has to resonate, so it causes them to respond. That they like. They share. They comment.

"That is as true of the fans in Stretford as it is in China."

you're having to defend it because you're arguing against the official stats, with the only evidence being a picture of two heads.

People will talk about the figures being disgustingly high, but I remember thinking exactly the same when Figo and Zidane moved to Real 15 years ago, and the same again when they signed Kaka and Ronaldo.

In a few years time the fee for Pogba won't be a big deal any more.

So where are the Pogba naysayers? There were about 481 people who voted against his transfer in the poll on the now closed transfer thread. Is this worthy of its own thread? Come out and let us know how you feel now that he's one of our own

They probably just didn't think we should spend £100m on him, which I think was how the poll was phrased. And which, to be fair, we didn't.

DDG is 6'5" you crazy bastards.
whitetextdab

Edwin van der Sar's height is given as 1.97m, which is less than 6' 6". He towered over our defence, whereas De Gea doesn't look taller than the likes of Smalling, Carrick etc.

Okay, white text. But I went to the trouble of checking Edwin's height so I'm going to post this anyway. :p

So you believe de gea is taller than pogba too? I am not only arguing against the "facts" because In real life it's obvious he's bigger than de gea. You can see from the other photo he's nearly as big as zlatan, no chance does Dave match up to him in that regard. DDG is no bigger than 6'2 at best.

Yes, the circumstances have changed. Earlier, Real were literally the only club who could pay crazy money to land the player and most of the time the narrative used to be "it was always my dream". My feeling is that two things have changed since then. Firstly, other clubs have developed the financial strength to compete on wages and transfer money and the second thing is that the PL is where all the action is right now. Mourinho, Klopp, Pep are all here and so are some of the top players in the world. The La Liga with its 2 horse race every year seems less like an attraction now.
