If it's true and if he actually extends, then we really need a true defensive midfielder like Rice to sit behind Pogba and Bruno. Best chance of making it balanced.

Good if true, but as mentioned in the grealish thread it's take it or leave it time. Under no circs should we allow him to run into that last year and for a circus to ensue. If he won't extend we must sign grealish and take what we can for PP, even a player swap with Varane.

There will be United fans fuming over this.

Pogba FC we go again!
@Rozay

Depends on the outcome. If he gets a massive pay increase, his performances haven’t warranted it.
I’m happy the club have started talks early, so if they can’t agree there’s time to move him on and if he stays we can buy players to compliment him!

Delightful news! I think the smart business now would be to bring in a DM who can cover behind Pogba and Bruno with them both able to dictate from deeper positions without the defensive concern.
He hasn't signed mate. One thing at a time.

Interesting. One thing for sure, club won't let him run down the contract. If he refuses, he will be sold.

The weird thing is that I actually think that Bruno should be an all action midfielder. He has the ability and mentality for the role but for some reason we use him as a 10 or second striker. It feels that I'm missing something because it's not as if in his current role he was consistent in the general play.

Game to game variation but I'd agree. Still need a pure defensive mid behind them, but in bigger games where there is less space and time, said it a few times last season but Bruno and Pogba should've switched. Pogba is better at receiving the ball under pressure and handling the physical aspect that those games sometimes have, to help hold it up and bring others into play. Bruno is brilliant and does a terrific job at linking up as a 10 IMO and it's very hard to take the ball off him, but in those games he can get marked out of the game as a 10. He has the ability to be an excellent #8 and has played there in the past, so i wouldn't worry about that, and it'd help give us more control as Pogba is a calmer player than Bruno when played further up, and Bruno would naturally have space and time being deeper so he'd be fine in that aspect too.

Ideally, we'd play a balanced midfield 3 where Pogba and Bruno are either side of a holder and share responsibilities of being the 8 and 10, but anyway...

He gets paid what he gets paid because he's one of the most (if not the most) marketable & talented players in our squad, that's mostly business & economics, not football.
Caring about what a multi-billion dollar business pays to its millionaire employees and wondering whether their performance 'warrants it' is truly a fruitless exercise.

This could be a final attempt to negotiate a new contract, as I also saw something about Ronaldo and Juve wanting to use him as part of a deal for Pogba. So might be a last check and if not, we actually try and get Ronaldo back? Could be a mutually beneficial thing if Pogba just doesn't want to stay. Ronaldo, Cavani, Rashford, Sancho and Greenwood to rotate for the wings and striker position anyone??

Of course though the midfield for me just needs sorting out, but anyway.

Best solution for everyone.

Pogba and Fernandes are currently our two best players by a comfortable margin. Anyone who denies that is a fool IMO.

You write as if clubs can always sell players before they run down their contract. What if there are no takers?

Oh I agree with you regarding the defensive midfielder, someone that can anchor the defense. It's just that when you mentioned the three of them, I told to myself that unless Bruno's role changes we will still lose control and remain unable to be great. Think about players like David Silva and Iniesta, they were both very good in the last third like Bruno but Silva in particular was less influential in his earlier roles than he was in his last role as a CM, the same is true for De Bruyne. The roles aren't as flashy but it makes a midfield so balanced and makes transitions easier. Nowadays 4231 isn't an easy system for CMs because they will often be outnumbered, so to me it makes little sense when Bruno seem to have all the tools and attitude to turn our midfield into a genuine strength. And it could make life easier for everyone, the central defense and allow attackers to not be as focused on defence.

Being in contract discussion with him is what I am delighted to hear. Talking about bringing in a DM is what I hope the club is doing whilst negotiating a contract. You don't leave decisions like this to "one thing at a time". We should be working on multiple projects at any given time to improve the club.

He's basically squashed that within the hour. I too hope we are working on his replacement along with a CDM. Do not want him leaving on a free.

Pogba will have a lot of suitors. If he is available, someone like PSG will pay good money for him. I know that most of the clubs are probably not going to offer much for him this summer but if he is available for 50m, I don't think anybody would want to miss out.

I agree, if his intention is not to sign the contract, then I hope he has a storming Euro's and can convince PSG or another to come calling. Losing him on a free, needing replaced from fresh funds would do alot of harm to any future transfers. Replacing him this summer is a must if that is his decision.

I also hope we do everything we can to tie him down before this, but the ball is very much in Pogba's court unfortunately.

We need to set a deadline for him - get a very good offer on the table and if he won't commit he can go (provided there is a buyer). I'd like to see his replacement brought in before we sell him though, else £50m gets added onto the price tag of said player

Agreed. I can only see PSG really wanting him, but then again there seems to be alot of football politics surrounding them at the minute, so who knows.

I think we're in a no lose situation. He leaves this summer we'll get a good fee for a player who at the very least divides opinion.

He signs a new contract and we keep hold of a talented player for now. With possibly a chance to sell for a higher fee in the future.

Even if he leaves for free next summer, yeah it's a slight kick in the balls but it's hardly devastating. We'll get another year and plenty of time to ready a replacement.

It's rare we're in such a position.

I really hope Pogba stays and becomes part of a title challenging if not winning United team. The lose situation though is if we agree he signs a 5 year mega-wages extension ans p155es the likes of Bruno, Rashford and co off.

His replacement would be VdB I'm sure

I've not much to base this on, in fact nothing, but I don't get the feeling wages battles are a thing anymore.

If Pogba gets a huge salary I think there's more chance Bruno and Rashford are delighted. It means they're next.

It's an amazing gravy train they're all on.

Hmm ok then, let’s make him the highest paid player in the world, I’m mean Bruno won’t mind playing second fiddle to a player who’s not had anywhere near the same impact. The club has leant from Sanchez I hope.

Bruno has helped us achieved top four twice now while Pogba has helped united to 2 of 3 of the only pieces of silverware the club has won since Ferguson's retirement and he has outperformed Bruno in Uniteds biggest matches. I'd say they're both valuable to the club and we should keep both at whatever cost. I don't think you can draw parrellels to Sanchez here.

That's quite a leap you've taken unnecessarily, it's also inaccurate. Messi gets about £1M a week, and the likes of Ronaldo & Neymar earn about 200k-300k less than that.

Beyond that, it's only the media that whip up the fan fascination with footballer wages and create this idea that just because player A earns x amount, automatically player B feels entitled to earn x+1 at least. It's ridiculous and steeped in the notion of jealousy about how much these athletes earn, and therefore they write stories with the intention of creating hype & clicks for ad revenue, and in return the fans start developing both entitlement & resentment towards the players. This happens more often with United because of our status & amount of fans we have.

If you seriously believe that Bruno (or anyone else) is going to throw their toys out because Pogba's agent has negotiated a contract improvement for his client, then there's not much rational debate to be had here quite frankly, especially considering the media frequently lie about wages because they have no idea the personal contracts of players - instead they workout the total possible sum a player could potentially earn on a weekly basis inclusive of bonuses. Nobody has any idea on a weekly or monthly basis how much these guys actually earn because each contract is incredibly complex and needs to consider things like individual & team bonuses, sponsorships, image rights etc.

Finally, Sanchez can't be compared because he was signed as the highest earner in the squad, and contributed nothing, and also wasn't that marketable or that talented to warrant it.

When people are saying as he's marketable he should be paid whatever he wants for him to stay, then it's not.

Yes I believe it, as it has happened previously, it causes issues in the dressing room, if it isn't warranted. You went off on a bit of a tangent adding stuff to my post, so I've filtered it a bit, as adding stuff I haven't stated isn't correct.

Take Bruno out of the team for the last 2 seasons and it's no CL qualification, which is more important than the Europa Cup final that he played in.

Pogba is more likely to shine in a CL knockout game than Bruno is, so I guess having them both is good for us

Do you understand why footballers get paid the amount that they do? Marketing & economics absolutely comes into it, to deny it is frankly ignorant. And I didn’t say he should get paid whatever he wants, but he absolutely has the right to negotiate a new contract.

And if you believe that has happened, then there’s no rational discussion to be had because at this point you’re choosing to believe rumours not facts.
You’ve taken out valuable information about football contracts and what goes into them, the reason I included that in my post is because I’ve been a part of writing, negotiating and reading a few footballers contracts in recent years so I’ve seen first hand just how incorrect these sensationalist media stories are, and just how complex the contracts are - and also how much their pay varies week to week.
Its not a tangent, it’s crucial to this discussion.
