Patrick Dorgu | United in talks

looks like he's going to Liverpool now?

That will not be nice. From my one minute google, it looks like its dodgy sources but please let us know if you have seen it in any credible sources.

If true - Pool are smart. Kerkez is hyped beyond belief at the moment and they have done quite welll in less hyped value signings.

Can we really afford to go for another prospect player? As really good potential but if we sign him we probably need 1 more
The way I see it, the more mature players don't seem to have the pace required for Premier League football and are priced out of the market in the PSR era

Better to buy outstanding youngsters

True. I’d love us to go for Nuno Mendes though. Probably in the top 3 best LBs in Europe.

solid defending wise but not as strong going forward as Dorgu or even the kid Quenda from Sporting

We don’t play with LBs though. There’s barely any such thing as a wing back tbh, and signing Mendes to play in attack would be stupid to me. I have no idea who we should be targeting for this strange formation, but I’d rather not see specialist defenders in the situations Dalot has been finding himself in every week.

There’s a very small group of players who can play this role well enough IMO, and in most scenarios, you will either have a defender in attack or an attacker in defence.

You do realise he played this exact role for Amorim at Sporting.........

Inter play with wing backs and their wing backs are defenders who are very good at attacking, We sort of forgot what attacking FB looks like.

I think what'll happen is we will sign Nuno M and then León will settle into life in England like Kone has. Nice and easy and out of the spotlight. Possibly a loan at some point while Nuno takes over from Shaw. Then León comes back here to duke it out with Mendez for the starting spot or is sold on for profit. Or else Leon is phenomenal and we give him a shot from next summer to compete with the footballer formally known as Luke Shaw.... I really do see us signing Mendez in the summer though. It makes too much sense and he'd be an instant hit if he can stay fit

I’ve seen Mendes play football many times, I don’t need to realise anything. He’s a full back, but apparently we’re not looking for one of those.

Di Marco would be in that ‘small group’ I speak of. As would Davies. As would Bale once upon a time. And Antonio Valencia/Young. With the exception of Bale, most of those are good but not elite wingers, who logic suggests could probably play full back too (which happened with Young and Valencia). Bale was the other way in being a full back that people watched and thought (he could play winger). Nobody watches Mendes and thinks he could play as a forward. He’s a defender who can support a forward very well. Majority of full backs, good going forward or not, will be blunt instruments if asked to play as the primary wide attacking threat.

Exactly. I do think in the long run though Amorim will do what he did at sporting and play a winger in one of the wing back roles. He needs them trained up on defending first.

I'm thinking if you sign do Mendes - possibly Amad on the other side in games against lesser opposition when you need that extra attacking flair to break down low-blocks, and then Dalot at RWB in bigger games when you maybe need to be defensively a bit more solidity (that's if he can reel in the rash tackles and be smarter, Amad could move to the right-side AM slot then or come off the bench later on).

Well he better. It’s solely because he’s new that people seemingly have little to no objection to the fact that we’ve overnight become a team that plays with 5 defenders. There’s every chance we will line up at home against Southampton tonight with 5 at the back. This is something that will become unacceptable overnight one day if it continues, especially in a team that can’t score goals for shit.

We dont have to sign Mendes if he isn't good at attacking, there will be plenty of FBs/WBs who can attack.

It's not just whether winger is better attacker than Wing back. Its the structure we are playing with, this gives more solid foundation for the team to build on rather than 4 at the back, at least as per the coach.

With 3 CB, we can always play wingers with good work rate as wing backs, lot of players have done well playing that role. One of them was Moses. We can always look for player like that.

Yes, we can also target players who are strong and play then as WBs, like Conte did with Moses.

Scoring goals doesnt depend on playing more attacking tbh. Pep plays with all midfielders and still scored lot of goals. We used to play 4 attackers with one attack minded midfielder, and were among the lowest scorers.

It absolutely depends on the attacking qualities of your players though. And currently, we are asking Dalot and Mazraoui to contribute more than they are capable of in the attacking department (because they are defenders), which has visibly resulted in a lot of promising attacking situations breaking down with them.

Yes, it depends on attacking qualities. Right now our wingers are Garnacho, Amad, Antony, Rashford. Not a good pile to pick from.

Right now our wing back situation is dire, but it's also good that we have a manager who isn't changing his philosophy, ready to go through the growing pains by playing the same system instead of changing to scrap the results. Now our management should do their best to sign at least one good wing back to improve the team.

Of course it does. But the formation isn’t an issue. It’s the quality of attacking players like you’ve just said. His sporting team banged in goals for fun but they have a much better striker and more technical 10s than we have.

Mendes is surely closer to Evra than Irwin?? He is an attacking fullback, an aggressive runner - moreso than Shaw - who I think would make an effective wingback. Theo Hernandez and Kerkez are players who's suitability is more questionable for me.

If Dorgu is of the required quality he would surely be a great option as it looks like he could play either side.

And that quality is unlikely to increase significantly if we replace Dalot and Mazraoui with two different defenders. The point is, Dalot and Mazraoui are perfectly good offensive full backs, but not good enough offensively to play without a winger ahead of them. As has been exposed this season. If we simply swap them with Nuno Mendes, there will be little to no improvement in my opinion. He too is just a defender. A very good one, but he’ll be asked to play a different sort of role. Quenda, I have lore optimism about, as he is a winger with good work-rate, and actually has genuine final third decisive quality. But by and large, we appear to be looking for a full backs to replace a full back, and I’m sceptical of the attacking improvement this would provide.

Do we have a buy-back clause on Elanga? He would be a perfect wing-back of we are fecking insistent upon playing with them.

I was wondering when we would start being linked with an incoming or 2 (even if it is Ighalo on loan) - as clearly we have some temporary outgoings.

In a crowded field, a left wing back is surely priority number 1?

As I have only just heard of this fella, I can confidently conclude he looks top

Just had a look at the positions he's played:
RW: 10
LB: 6
LM: 3
RB: 2
LW: 1

Never seen him play but I can see why we'd be interested based on that.

No but even if we did, he’d be mad to join this binfire right now. Especially if forest make the champions league.

How credible is this.

Normally a terrible source but Ornstein has verified we are interested. Given he is a LWB but also versatile and not too expensive it could make some sense.
