Patrick Dorgu | Medical today? No. Weekend.

So becuase I dont watch Lecce I cant say that Kerkez, Ait-Nouiri, Antoinee Robinson, Nuno Mendes etc are better? OK. I didnt know Dorgue was that good. I stand corrected. He's a fkn bargain if thats true

It certainly makes you sound a bit over dramatic and unreasonable to become so upset about what you perceive to be a lack of quality of a player that you've probably never seen play a game of football.

Just another example of penny pinching. He might turn out to be a decent player and anything is better than what we have at lb but he's not exactly the caliber of player we need right now. We act like Brighton and before everyone says yeah Brighton do well. Yes for a small club they are awesome but they finished 6th at the highest point and are usually what between 9th and11?. There are a million better LB's out there Kerkez, Ait-Nouiri, Antoinee Robinson, Nuno Mendes. Loads. And Im not having this we have no cash nonsense.

Right, so you are very quick to discredit Brighton's signings saying their highest finish is 6th so we shouldn't look at players they sign... yet have named players who play for clubs who have not finished above 6th either.

You are not having no cash nonsense, that is on you... face the reality, we are struggling for money. By saying we have money, money wont magically appear in the account.

All the names you mentioned are going to cost 50m+, in January 60m plus... which is double what we are paying for Dorgu..

Now add to that, we have signed another LB coming in Summer for the future, so he is the future LB with Dorgu.

Its easy to name names of players to sign, without being realistic.

Why can't people use all touch videos (not highlights) on YouTube to form a general impression?

You're missing the point.

Robinson cost Fulham £2m from Wigan

Kerkez cost Bournemouth £14m from AZ Alkmaar

Ait-Nouiri cost Wolves £9m from Angers FC

These weren't established LBs when they were signed, someone gambled on them, like we're gambling on this lad.

The other point to note is that I believe games like FIFA, which assign a footballer with a rating, have skewed people's understanding of what makes a good footballer. It's not about being the most naturally gifted or skillful, it's about being the right player for the right club at the right time in the right system.

I'd imagine there is about 10 minutes worth of that online for Dorgu. You could pick any player from our squad and I could pick a couple of matches where they would look like a world beater in such videos and also choose matches where they look like a disaster.

I'm sure you can but it doesn't mean that you should or that you're qualified to do it.

I could go home and perform knee surgery on myself with a breadknife and a YouTube video but I probably shouldn't.

I'll trust our Scouts on this. I don't think our problem over the last decade has been our Scouts, it's been not listening to our Scouts and plumping for the Instagram signing

That was clearly not what he meant, was it?

But its hard to judge a player if you haven't seen him play.

Thats why it's called an impression.

Unsure what this point is. I agree we've revamped our scouting but I don't think it's unreasonable to have reservations on price paid vs established quantity based in some online videos. Impressions change, it's not set in stone.

Some fans want us to sign the likes of Kerkez before they go to a team like Brighton or Bournemouth. Kerkez cost Bournemouth for £15.5m for example. Was that not penny pinching?

You can find quality signings in any league and at any price. Christ knows we should know that the fee being bigger doesn't make it a better signing.
Kerkez was signed from the Eredivisie too. This place would’ve lost its mind.

Thats why it's called an impression.

Sure, an almost meaningless one but impression is a broad word.

If I had the time or inclination I'm sure I could go through this forum and find thousands of fun impressions people formed of players from those videos before they signed. Might give an insight into how valuable that is compared to actually watching a player regularly.

Christ almighty. WE ARE NOT BOURNEMOUTH OR BRIGHTON! Im friggin sick and tired if this argument. Oh well Brighton get bargains lets do that well. Is that where we are now? Lets be Brighton? Oh how the world has fallen.
Weird hill to die on. You seem incredibly childish.

Its not meaningless. You can see his strengths and weaknesses from it and overlay that with the available stats. You don't need to watch every game to have an impression of a player.

To be clear, all of us want him to be a success, but if we can't post general impressions during the link what's the point in having a forum to discuss things? What's the point in discussing excitement or reservation with any transfer?

How can you know if they are better if you haven't seen him? You can't even spell his name..

Yeah they can be pretty misleading too. Fred and Schneiderlin come to mind in my experience.

You're perfectly welcome to buy from Brighton with our million percent mark up if you'd prefer to do it that way.

Udogie and Kayode are the benchmarks at roughly 18m euros. So we are overpaying.

I dont personally think the difference is alot. But we need to be working on this deals in advance in future so the right fees are paid.
That cant be the benchmark, maybe a base, as surely you have take into account January transfer for one of their best players, in a relegation battle and the United tax.

Fascinating that the few biggest moaners in here have clocked up a sizeable number of posts yet they don't even know how many seasons he's played or how many games at LB.

But they've watched a YouTube video .....

Not to mention they're failing at spelling the guy's name too.

Im guessing this is to me, I'm not trying to be an expert of Dorgu. I'm just saying from what I've seen he looks like he has potential but areas to improve. The fee seemed too high when it was 40m Eur, and my view on that hasn't changed. You won't find a club paying that for a relegation fighting LB with limited experience. Us included, thankfully.

I don't understand the complaints, first we spend too much on players who are average. Then we pay 50% of the price of an established LB (who would be 50m min) in January and still complaints of being expensive.

Then we have a lots of posters defending Hojlund and we should give him time because he's young, even though his fee was £80m

Dorgu can play multiple positions, has core ingredients to be a top player, and will not be as bad as Dalot or Mazraoui in that position. We paid much more for Yoro, not seeing many complaints there.

Who knew about Diallo when we signed him for £35m? Now no complaints. These type of signings bring down our wage structure not only now but in future, we have him on low enough wages that when it comes to contract renewal, it will still be a relatively cheap increase.

If Ruben wanted him, he fits what he wants to do, and I feel he will vastly improve in this system once he gets here. Can we just trust Ruben, with this and see?

Genuinely asking if he does according to you? From what I have seen on youtube (barely), he seemed to a bit suspect defensively. And his passing stats have been pretty absymal too. Of course I am no scout so if Ruben's team wants him, I am happy that we seem to be getting him. But my expectations aren't that high to begin with.

From what I understand it seems to be OK to be excited from a signing you haven't seen much of, but if you have reservations it's not allowed.

So you aren't being an expert of Dorgu but have a confident opinion that 40m is too high of a fee but 30+5 is not? Makes a lot of sense.

The 5m add on is apparently hard to achieve. So 10m less is not chump change.

And I'd imagine the club will want to pay that 5m in the end - as it would mean some success for the player and/or team.

I dont need to be an expert to know that a raw left back who has never been wing back, playing at a relegation fighting team in Italy is not worth 40m. And funnily enough no club, including us have stretched to that.

Young highly rated fullbacks from Serie A. I think its as close to a benchmark as you could get…. Hickey another example.

Calafiori and Cambiaso could be used to counter it.

Maybe Udogie and Kayode were less on the radar when the negotiations began. But that indicates foresight by both Spurs and Brentford.

Unless Dorgu completely bombs I dont see us losing out on the fee significantly.

Luckily we're not paying that much for him or what's this all about?

I have never understood endless debates on valuation of players during transfers. It is never easy to determine the fair value of a player as it depends on so much - talent, fit, temperament, buyer/seller financial position and contract position. And we fans have very little verified information on a lot of this. I can understand if it was 10m vs 40m, but beyond that it is just not helpful.

Luckily we're not paying that much for him or what's this all about?
Nothing. People seemed to have an issue when I said he wasn't worth 40m a few pages ago and it carried over. Apparently it's fine to be excited for signings you know little about but not be cautious about them. Go figure.
