Owen Hargreaves

Yup agree that time was called, he was given ample time. Gutted though that he was never able to play more for us as i think he would have been immense (thus avoiding the wesley muppetry) but it wasn't to be. Wish the lad all the best & hope West Brom do sign him as the deal would suit both parties.

Lawton of the Mail is reporting Hargo had offered to play for free this year.

Shame.

Much as I love Hargo, we don't need him. That ship has sailed.
It's not even the wages issue, it's the fact that he takes up a space in our squad allowance and he might not even be fit!

:(

Poor guy. Hope he manages to find a club (West Brom?) and has a good few years of actually playing football and doing well. He deserves it.

That photo from when he lasted 4 minutes is heartbreaking. You can see he was close to tears, and the interview says he broke down as soon as he got into the dressing room. I hope he can find a club, and play a few years at a competitive level again. If anyone deserves it its him.

West Ham would be a good move for him.

That's heartbreaking, really. And puts to bed any doubts that he refused to sign a new contract for us when he offered to do it for free. :(

I don't get why he played against Wolves if he felt his calf and hammys the previous day in training.

I understand that he and medical team were enthusiastic but when you've worked so hard surely caution was the right choice.

The dislocation was just plain bad luck though. Poor sod.

he is one of the most unluckiest footballer out there, a shame really considering what a good player he is when he is fit, one of the best defensive and versatile midfielder in european football.

wish him all the luck and hopefully he can get a club soon.

You've not suffered from a long term injury then. You so desperately want things to be alright that you'll convince yourself of anything.

I'm wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he said to himself "It's nothing you're just being overly paranoid over your come back".

I feel sorry for the lad, I have a similar knee condition and it is not fun at all, When I saw him go off after 5 mins I knew he was done at OT. Reading the interview he gave is fantastic as it shows his determination that made him such a good big game player, hell it's what made him a great player when he was fit.

If he'd never had his knee problem he would have been a fantastic player for us for years, his ability has never been in doubt.

And words were starting that he had become so mentally fragile over his injuries that he couldnt train with the squad for fear of further set backs. Perhaps his over zealousness to prove people wrong (and fair play, he has all the right to try to step up in the face of such rhetoric, I respect him immensely for it) out did him in the end.

Sounds like a fantastic lad. I'd actually read a book about his struggles to find fitness if one were ever written.

Choked up a bit reading how he was in tears after coming off against Wolves. Nice of VDS to go to Owen's house and console him. No shame, I'd have called it quits long ago if I was him.

I'll do a little celebration for him if and when he plays a full match at top level again. Hope he gets it.

Can a player be added to the squad of 25 after Sept 1st? Hodgson said he was willing to wait for Hargo but, if he can't be added later, won't matter if Hargo being a free-agent can be signed outside the transfer window.

I don't think so. I think if you fail to register a player before Sept. 1st, then he can't play in the league till he is registered again in January.

signing hargo on a pay as you play deal won't hurt clubs with a small squad..it is a risk worth taking actually, and i don't think hargo is going to demand a lot of money for an appearance as well.

Pretty sure you can register players brought in on a free, if you couldn't it be a restraint of trade.

I think if Hargo did opt for an MLS club to prove his fitness, he'd have no shortage of suitors in January

Not necessarily. With the salary cap requirements in MLS, most clubs would be very reluctant to take a chance on someone with that kind of injury history. Not sure if the league allows pay-for-play type contracts, but most clubs would be reluctant to guarantee him more than $100k per year until he can prove his match fitness.

And how many English clubs are willing to pay him a hefty salary with his injury record? Any club willing to pay him more than 500k GBP is rife with fools in the management level. He's got to be a minimal wage loaded with appearance incentives. The MLS would probably offer him around 200-400k US with incentives, namely because he's a known name in the sport.

He's said he'd have been happy to play for United next year for free - I don't think his wages are ever going to be an issue, I think he'll take whatever personal terms he's offered providing he wants to move to the club.
