Owen Hargreaves

Hodgson remain interested to sign him, but want assurances if he will be fit and injury-free. ouch...

That would be the silliest thing - how does one assure any footballer will be injury-free? Especially with Hargo's history am sure no one can give any kind of assurances. Through the contract I guess is the only way to assure the club is protected and as long as he signs a contract the club agrees with, that's the best possible situation

Leicester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has called off his pursuit of former England midfielder Owen Hargeaves.

The injury-plagued 30-year-old was released by Manchester United in May and Eriksson was keen to sign him.

But Eriksson told BBC Radio Leicester: "It will not happen now. If it was going to happen it would have already been done but now it is too late.

"I can't reach him. I have only spoken to his agent and he has not come back to me, which is a little bit strange."

Hargreaves has made 42 appearances for England but played just 39 games for Manchester United in almost four years at Old Trafford.

The Canada-born midfielder recently used YouTube to post daily fitness videos and has been linked with a possible move to Scottish champions Rangers, newly promoted QPR, West Brom and various MLS sides.

He seems to have disappeared completely.

Physically he may be fine, but mentally there are huge question marks over him. I won't be surprised if he ever plays top flight football again.

He would die at a training at Stoke.

If he goes to the Championship, I would go as far to say that whoever he signs for WILL get promoted if he is able to keep himself fit and play in the majority of games.

If I was a mid-table Premiership team or below, I'd be screaming for my club to try and sign Hargreaves. However, maybe there is still something seriously wrong underneath it all, either physical or mental, which is putting off any potential suitors.

Would be a massive shame if Hargreaves didn't get to play ever again.

Don't see what you have to lose if he's on a pay as you play contract. If by winter you haven't seen hit his stride, let him go. Sort of like the Davids deal last season.

Perhaps he doesn't want a pay as you play deal?

Wasn't it rumoured he turned down a pay as you play deal at United? If so, why would he accept one anywhere else?

Maybe because he'd have a better chance of getting a game at another club, and therefore more money. There's nothing that says that even a fit Hargreaves would be the same kind of player he used to be - he might not be able to displace our current midfielders.

West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed the club have made an offer to Owen Hargreaves.

The former Fulham boss is keen to give the midfielder a route back into the Barclays Premier League after he was released by Manchester United, writes Stewart Coggin.

United decided not to renew Hargreaves' contract due to the player's persistent knee problems that have restricted him to just 27 Barclays Premier League matches in the past four years.

But Hargreaves has been assessed by West Brom doctor Mark Gillett and Hodgson confirmed that the positive results of the tests have prompted the club to make him an offer.

"We'd like him to play for us," said Hodgson at the 2011/12 Barclays Premier League launch.

"I met him and we have emailed a proposal to him. We made it clear to him after a test and said 'we agree with you, your knee is ok and you can play football'.

"If he would like to come and play for us, that'd be lovely, but whether our offer is going to be interesting to him, I don't know.

"He was looked at by our doctor Mark Gillett, an eminent person in his field. We had all the test results that he brought with him, and we spoke to his man Alex McKechnie, who has been rehabilitating him over the last year.

"He didn't go through a stringent medical but he was looked at by someone who should know what he's talking about. He just wants to play football again, and was concerned to convince us, and perhaps other teams, that he is a fit player."

Good news for Hargo, but eh, Roy, about the whole 'looked at by someone who should know what he's talking about'...... ehhhh

I expect him to play 25 league games next season comfortably and be a strong contender for a team of the year. As far as I remember Saha played a rather large number of games next season for Everton following his United exit.

Hargreaves to WBA -> deal almost done.

Has to complete a medical

Not really, 14 starts or 29 appearances in his first season for Everton compared to 10 starts or 24 appearances in his last season for us. People just forgot how much Saha actually did play for us and decided to use him playing well for Everton as an excuse to have a go at our medical team.

People lump Saha and Hargreaves together but they were worlds apart - Saha made 34, 22, 30, 34 and 24 appearances for us in his 5 seasons; Hargreaves only made over 10 once in his 4 seasons.

Hopefully they're a bit bore thorough than we were when we signed him

Signing Hargreaves is fecking madness.

It'll be pay as you play I bet.

Goodd eal for West Brom potentially - a player better than they'd usually get with a fairly minimal risk I would reckon.

It's a good move for West Brom so long as they aren't relying on him to play X ammount of games. If Hodgson is viewing it as a shot to nothing and is confident that his squad is capable of achieving its targets without Hargreaves then I think it is a smart signing.

As much as I love Saha, he's still a crock though.

As if he turned a deal with us.

Jesus are people really that stupid to believe that?

SAF called time on him.

Exactly. You have to prove you're even worth a contract before you start demanding any wage at all. Clearly it wasn't worth the risk once the time came to assess his future with us, regardless of what I or any other person rooting for Hargo thought.
