West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed the club have made an offer to Owen Hargreaves.
The former Fulham boss is keen to give the midfielder a route back into the Barclays Premier League after he was released by Manchester United, writes Stewart Coggin.
United decided not to renew Hargreaves' contract due to the player's persistent knee problems that have restricted him to just 27 Barclays Premier League matches in the past four years.
But Hargreaves has been assessed by West Brom doctor Mark Gillett and Hodgson confirmed that the positive results of the tests have prompted the club to make him an offer.
"We'd like him to play for us," said Hodgson at the 2011/12 Barclays Premier League launch.
"I met him and we have emailed a proposal to him. We made it clear to him after a test and said 'we agree with you, your knee is ok and you can play football'.
"If he would like to come and play for us, that'd be lovely, but whether our offer is going to be interesting to him, I don't know.
"He was looked at by our doctor Mark Gillett, an eminent person in his field. We had all the test results that he brought with him, and we spoke to his man Alex McKechnie, who has been rehabilitating him over the last year.
"He didn't go through a stringent medical but he was looked at by someone who should know what he's talking about. He just wants to play football again, and was concerned to convince us, and perhaps other teams, that he is a fit player."
