Ousmane Dembele

Massive talent but also a big risk if we're buying him. Doesn't seem to fit what Ole wants.

Terrible injury record
Doesn't appear to be desperate to play for Utd.
Off field issues
Rumours over lack of professionalism in terms of looking after himself.

Do we ever learn?

Robben is also my main reference. I loved him from the beginning but when Real Madrid got rid of him, I was torn between the idea of United pouncing on a genuinely great potential and taking a big risk on an injury prone player. I feel that Dembélé is in the same bracket, with the small caveat about Barcelona being generally terrible with players fitness management, Alba being an example among their big names that people probably overlook.

Now it's also fair to say that Robben was still a sick note at Bayern and his muscular injuries were seemingly chronic, more than simply being due to lifestyle or poor medical support. I suspect that the same is true for Dembélé and the question for me is whether United will be able to manage Dembélé similarly, manage the fact that he will have niggles, that he will need to be constantly monitored and should never be left dealing with it by himself?
The key is managing his fitness issues and I do believe our club will take the necessary steps to bring the best out of him. He's a risk worth taking and a player that needs mentoring which Pogba can do IMO.

Didn’t work out at another big club - yep
Horrific injury record - yep
Attitude problems - yep
Doesn’t seem desperate to come here - yep
Clearly a late alternative to someone else - yep

Please sign him.

My whole view would be different if I could trust the lad to stay fit, but I don't at all. What good is a signing if you feel like they'll barely play? What benefit is it.
I don’t want him either due to his injury record but you have to admit, any games he does play surely keeps Dan James away.

Nope, incompetence at its greatest.

Of course, but what if its under 10 games? We've spent a ton, to basically end up in the same situation as last season.

To me signing Dembele doesn't solve the RW issue at all because he quite simply can't be trusted.

Persuading a player to join us who clearly doesn't want to leave Barca? And an injury prone player at that. Rather him keep quiet and focus on his own game which needs to improve massively.

All players are persuaded to join a club. I really don’t know why this is being continuously highlighted as an issue. He’s not going to be strong armed into going somewhere.

Yes we all know about Di Maria, but that doesn’t taint every player.

Lots of players don’t want to leave clubs, but ultimately if they do then they have to pick themselves on and get in with their career.

The injuries are the real issue.

There are obviously concerns but we should at least give the kid a chance, if they do manage to sign him.

Does Sancho appear to be desperate to play for Utd? We know he's willing to kick up a fuss when he wants a move - he did it at Man City - doesn't appear to be doing so now.

As far as the off field issues and professionalism, it's all regarding him staying up too late playing games then being late for training isn't it? Something which Sancho is guilty of as well. Plus Sancho had a fair few other discipline issues last season.

The only real major difference is the injury record.

I'm mildly excited for this deal solely based on that his talent is at WC level but everything else about this deal stinks of incompetence.

He's the only player I would be truly exited about for the RW if Sancho is not possible. He is one of the most talented players in the World imo. and young enough that his injuries might go away with age. As far as the potential attitude problems, Pogba and Martial will take care of that plus Ole has proven to be very good with young attackers.

The people complaining, who would you bring in because it is clear we are not paying what Dortmund want?

Get someone on loan or get a young player for a much smaller price. If we can get Dembele on loan with an option then that would be great because he is someone with a lot of talent and it could work out brilliantly if his physical issues can be resolved but if we're spending a fee of around 50 million euros for a player who has had huge injury problems then that's a big risk (they've seldom gone well for us in recent years) and probably puts paid to Sancho even next summer. Plus Dortmund will get a cut of this deal so would actually make money out of us not buying Sancho.

For €50M, and given that Sancho ain't happening, this is worth the punt.

Could be a bargain if he gets his injuries sorted out

About £45m. It's a decent price for someone with as much talent as him. Can't really get excited about it though.

Barca will be selling him for about half the price they bought him at 3 years ago.

Absolute incompetence on show here this window.

Get these f*cks (Ed,Judge,The Glazers) out of the club !

No, no, no, we have spent ages well years waiting to have a long term project and build the team bring in the right players and now we look like we are making progress we are going straight back to what got us in the mess in the first place.

His injuries are a big concern but at that price and assuming his wages aren't astronomical it's probably worth a punt, certainly ahead of the likes of Brooks.

If he can get over his injury issues(wasn't a crock before joining Barca), he's a €100m player easily. It is a gamble but which transfer isn't?
As long as it doesn't stop us moving for Sancho next summer, it is a calculated gamble worth taking. The boy is only 23.

I am excited by this to be honest if we can’t get Sancho. I rather we take a chance on Dembele than Sarr or Brooks. Big brother Paul can mentor him at United

This club and board is beyond help. Buying a guy who is made of glass and is at Phil Jones level in terms of injuries.

It's a good price, but it should be almost a half price deal seeing as he'll be fit for half the season at best if we get very lucky.
Well, it is at half price as a player of his talent would be Sancho money. It's a gamble but it's worth it. 50 mil on someone like Sarr that we know is not a World beater or take a risk on a truly special talent? If we want titles and CL it's the right thing to do imo. Worst case scenario we still get back 20 or 30 mil with a sale.

I agree about the long term project, and fully on board with what Ole is trying to put together.

My point is that, this guy could fit in to the long term vision. Great talent, young. If Pogba is convincing him about the United project then at the prices being he could be a good choice.

Supposedly Liverpool's first choice before signing Jota. Not good enough for us.

Never change United fans.
Why are people not taking into account of his horrendous injury record. It's a bad deal.

worst case we can’t shift him like half of our squad it’s a terrible idea.

Buy the player or no deal.

United Ed, lets buy this injury prone guy and bail Barca out of another fine mess.

Imo, our incompetence throughout the window has left us little choice.

I think he is worth the risk at €50 million, the money would only sit in a Glazer bank account otherwise. He has apparently turned down Liverpool this window too, so he gets brownie points. I'm getting on board the Ousmane train.
