Our transfers beyond Pogba

Ruben Neves (Lewis Cook would've been good) and Mustafi for me. Young RW wouldn't be a bad move but after Dembele went to Dortmund I couldn't see a player that I rated more or as much in that profile so I'd probably leave it :( Outgoings are the priority post-Pogba anyway
 
We don't have a proper RB I feel, recruiting there would be enough after Pogba.

Don't think its a funds issue but a team balance thing. I believe we will get an experienced central defender in but probably someone reliable already knocking around the EPL give time to Bailly to bed in. I think there are two sides to this issue, numbers wise one can argue that we have enough depth but imagine if we are ever forced to field a back 4 of

away at West Ham because of injuries. We have endured worse when we had better quality in depth than this. I'd rather we upgrade on Rojo and Darmian.
 
We couldn't afford Mahrez for £45m could we?

That would be a transfer window that could never be beaten for me (not far off now mind). I would say unrealistic as well though.
 
I dont understand why everyone wants a RW mkhteryan will be playing there.

The other thing that would aid the RB position is having a R wide player in front of them that actually plays football and keeps the opponent RB busy. I'm not so sure, maybe Josè sees Pogba more as a 10 rather than an 8. And in his presser talking about Rooney he wasn't really overly enthusiastic.
 
I don't understand why more of you isn't craving a defensive\holding mid more. Take a look at the defensive options in our midfield compared to the other top teams.

Pogba in a midfield 2 with Schneid won't cut it defensively. And I highly doubt that Mourinho will move away from his tried and trusted 4-2-3-1.

With the options we have now, IMO our only option for not getting overrun in midfield is a 3 man midfield.

Wouldn't mind him on a free \ low fee. He could be a bridge gap for the DCM position like Zlatan is for the ST position. With TFM hopefully stepping up in a year or two.

It's called giving Schneiderlin a chance. I agree, though, that Pogba isn't necessarily suited to a two man midfield. I don't think any one of our midfielders are.

I am all for giving Schneiderlin a chance, but as a box-to-box or part of a 3 man midfield. In a midfield two the player playing with Pogba need to be purely defensive like Krychowiak, Kante etc.

Schneid would be immense in a midfield 3 with Pogba and a purely defensive midfielder next to him. In a midfield two no, he doesn't have the tackle, the positioning or the passing.

Exactly. I would only keep one of the trio (Jones, Blind and Rojo) around. As centre-back number 4 my choice would be Jones. He's strong, knows how to defend (no bullshit) and has age on his side. He seems to be loving life here. I'm under the impression that Mourinho also rates him. Blind has been caught a lot of time at the wrong place at the wrong time, there's almost always one or two silly mistakes in his game and i do question his athleticism. I don't think he can compensate that by playing
out from the back...Rojo is much worse, no words needed. He simply needs going!

Overall the problem is that there're a lot of players who're capable to play everywhere and nowhere. We miss specialists:

Centre-back (the aformentioned Blind and Rojo)
Right back Darmian is ordinary and physical week, Valencia not a starter, we need one!
Defensive midfield neither of Carrick and Blind should be a starter, one needs going.
Number 10: Rooney is okay having around, third striker and can help out as a number 10, but Mata...

The problem is these players aren't per se really bad ones, but we only need one of them in each position.

If we want to keep the numbers tight, something like this should be on the agenda, imo.

Bring in a backup player as a left back, a (backup) centre back and most importantly, a new right back. It doesn't necessarily need to be a backup as centre-back, if someone like Mustafi could be possible, i'd get him in a heartbeat, competition heating up isn't actually a bad thing. I'm not that sold on Bailly, Smalling and Jones, all three of them have to prove themselves, imo.

Selling guys like Blind, Rojo, Mata, Fellaini could recoup some of the money. Just do it!

I like that team, hope Mourinho has something similarly good in mind.
 
In order to get a possible title winning team, we definitly need to improve our defense individually as the unit may be more attacked minded than Van Gaals. I would rather play and use a three man midfield with Pogba in his favorite position, and use another dynamic player in Herrera. He may not be the best but can provide us a lot of aggresion, and can play as a 8 and 10 just like Pogba likes bombing forward, so he can be more disciplined than him.

Not sure about Darmian......he is a specialist in his position and I think he could be a player that Mourinho could help improve....I'd be happy to see a more balanced RB come in and someone who can improve us from an attacking standpoint

otherwise if we had a chance of Mahrez which we do I'd sell young and make the adjustment above

Fellaini is very very dispensable...... Bastian's fitness is the obvious issue

The problem for me is that very few players are actually suited to that if you consistently play 3 man midfield of almost equal strength or even better the two man midfield will always lose out. You can of course get away with it if you are a team that largely bypasses the midfield and the midfielders can mainly rely on taking care of their defensive duties.

I still maintain the view that the best midfield setup is one of having a player whose primary jo it is to provide cover for the space between defense and midfield, who is basically helping to protect the back four and can if need be slot into the defensive line during build up. One player who is a big of a mad runner, who is energetic in closing down and helps in defense and attack in always equal meassure, usually doesn't need to be the most brilliant of footballers but needs the attitude and energy to work his buttocks off over 90 or 120 minutes. Lastly you than add someone who is a bit of a genius, great on the ball and smart player that can attack himself or pick the decisive pass. Because he has two partners who doe the majority of defensive work he is free to roam around a fair bit and do his thing.

If you get this setup right it's hard to beat by any team and I think José is looking to build a quality version of this setup. Where exactly Pogba fits in I'm not really sure but I have a feeling that we'll get the best out of him if we give him a ton of creative freedom and give him two partners who do the majority of the defensive work.
 
A CB and a left-footed RW to back up and eventually replace Mkhitaryan when he finishes. I'm happy with Darmian as RB, and I think Jose will like him too.

I think we can afford to wait on the Carrick replacement til next year personally. Carrick and Schneiderlin (maybe Schweinsteiger too) should be enough for us this season. Next season though, I'd want us to go for Weigl or Neves, definitely.

Yeah I agree, I just hope it's not too difficult to get one of them next year off the back of what will probably be good seasons for them.
 
I think we are just a quality RW signing away from a title winning team. I like Eric - Smalling partnership at the center of defence. Both are powerful, fast and proper/no nonsense defenders. Shaw and Darmian/TFM are also young full backs who will support the attack at every opportunity even though Darmian/TFM are not that excellent in providing crosses. Pogba/Mikhi - Morgan - Carrick/Bastian as a midfield trio have everything - creativity, power , tackles, runs to the box, goals from midfield to win tight games on their own. We just need a player like Mahrez who can create as well as score to complement Zlatan and Martial in the front three. IMO, Martial - Zlatan - Mahrez would be best / title winning front three for this season.
I think if we offer Leicester Mata + 15 millions(or Jones), they would happily let him go.

I think they (and me) want him to be in No.10 position (to oust Rooney), which will vacate the RW position (Mahrez, would be fantastic).

Rooney with his 8 league goals for a full season (I think he was ranked 26th in the EPL last season, for goals scored), and is not good enough to play for any EPL team, IMO. He is a Championship level striker.
I don't like defenders who cannot defend.
I don't like GKs who cannot make saves.
And I don't like strikers like Rooney, who cannot score goals.

I'm pretty sure after this summer, and hopefully a successful season for us, players will be falling over themselves to be part of Jose's 'project'... The main thing is, with Mourinho we'll be sure to target the players early and put the ground work in, and likewise Jose knows he'll get all the support in the market that he never really got at Chelsea. It's already apparent what he can do in the transfer market with us, in the less than ideal circumstances he (and we) had. What with him not officially starting til July and being in limbo and us not even being in the Champions League. Yet, we still managed to get two players who should really be starting for CL contenders, and Zlatan who could easily have stayed an extra season or two at PSG as well.

Just imagine what Jose and Utd could do off the back of a good season :devil:

EDIT - I think, looking further into next season, as a priority we need to focus on bringing in a Rooney replacement for the No.10 (or alternatively bring in a proper wide threat and move Miki inside) Carrick replacement and if no left-footed RW this summer, then definitely the season after. Or alternatively, if Pereira and Januzaj make good enough impressions then look to phase them in to the Starting XI ASAP
 
Micky would be much better in the #10 as he's industrious player that Mou would like. Will tick all boxes for Jose type of #10. Mahrez, DM and a CB and we're set.
Priority is DM. If we get anything extra would be great.

Don't get me wrong I'd love that too but if Rooney is fit then he will be number 10. He's just been playing on past glories for the last few seasons now yet the media never criticise him it's really annoying.

Hopefully mourinho will soon figure out Rooney is holding the team back and drop him.
 
I would love a Mahrez and CB to complete this window. Probably being greedy though. After Pogba I'm pretty happy but the squad still needs more depth. Too many new players could unsettle the squad still.
 
Definitely a centre back. Also maybe a winger.

RB, we need to give Darmian another chance.

Midfield, need to give Schneiderlin another year too.
 
Unrealistic imo to expect any further signings after Pogba and not entirely sure they're needed anyway we have one hell of a squad

I still think Mkhitaryan and Bailly are completely overshadowed by Zlatan and Pogba. This is actually not a bad thing and could be a blessing in disguise. They get the the platform to perform with out tons of scrutiny. I expect we will all be pleasantly surprised by them. I think Zlatan and Pogba have the cojones to live up to the hype and maybe even thrive under it.

Essentially, we might not even need more reinforcements.
 
With Schneiderlin and Pogba in front of him, Blind could easily play as our CDM. He's likely defensively a lot better now after his stint at CB and we have enough muscle in front of him to not worry as much about his lack of physicality.

He's still the best passer in our team and will be perfectly placed to complete a balanced midfield.
