Our form since the restart...WWWWWWWDLWWWWDWDWWWWL…WDWW (also the calm down thread)

I have a family member that is in the NHL. He tells me there are days they just don't have it, and it can snowball during a game. He can't explain it, and it frustrates the hell out of everyone on the team, but it's just a loss of mental sharpness that seems to permeate if more than one person is off that game. Once the seal is broken it really can start to "go" and those are the games they tend to get blown out in. He's good and on a good team, so it doesn't happen often, but he thinks its hilarious when the media attribute it to a million things other than it just being "one of those days"...we frankly all have them, and most of the players can surprisingly move on faster than most fans. He once missed a huge shot late in a game and I was somewhat surprised with how unaffected he was that night at dinner after the game. Seasons are marathons.

Thats exactly how I view the other day. These players have played an enormous amount for many months now...especially the WC players. Almost all of the games have been supremely competitive and necessitated acute mental sharpness. It looked to me after the 2nd goal that things just "went'...and they lost their fight. They knew they were losing, and the players just didn't have the reserve to recover. It's been mentally and physically exhausting few months and it came to a head.

And thats really it. It was bound to happen...yes the degree was alarming, but not anything that makes it "worse" or endemic. It just was one of those days...where a run of many intense games converged with a very motived squad in a very hard place to play. It just gave.

I never felt we were in the title race or even up to that standard as yet, but we are a very solid top 4 team that has the chance to put together a seriously successful season to build on with multiple trophies. Those are all still in play. We are trending upwards, without question...and frankly a win, tie, or near loss would not change our overall position. thats just the reality.

People can moan, and talk about changes, etc etc etc. I get it. But, for me...it was just one of those days. It stings but really changes nothing. And frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the players mostly feel the exact same way.

Lost 1 game in 12 and people are losing their heads! Obviously i get it’s because we got destroyed 7-0 and that should never ever happen to us no matter who we’re playing but that won’t define our season. We’ll still finish top 4 and we’re still in 2 other competitions. Let’s focus ahead and look at the bigger picture.
I thought we would come out after HT and the game would change. Before their first goal we had better control of the game from about middle of the first half. Several really good chances missed. When we conceded so early in the 2nd half I thought it was gone. I figured great, we're going to lose this 2-0 or maybe we get one back. When they scored the 3rd goal soon after the 2nd I thought we're in for a thumping. I honestly thought the game could end with them scoring 5, 6, or 7 by that point. Those goals were easy to predict just by the trotting around of the players and their inability to control the ball or clear it. I kept looking at the clock and wondering how the feck we were going to contain stop the bleeding with so much time left.

Many have said it but the 2nd balls they managed to turn into scoring chances were plentiful. They weren't great, we were just incredibly off yesterday.
Playing Bruno as a wide player just to get Wout on the field in a position he's not used to playing is a failed experiment. It also forces Rashford to play where he's not as strong.

I'm more upset over dropping points to Villa, Palace, and Leeds in recent weeks.

Great thread, about time there was some perspective.

Bruno not good enough, EtH should resign etc, the histrionics are out in force.

That game yesterday was so fecking weird thinking back on it now. Obviously we are limited in spots (De Gea playing out from the back, Weghorst) but we really lost because it felt like we couldn't win a single 50/50 ball or duel. EVERYTHING bounced back to them and every challenge seemed to go their way. Whether that was luck/us being leggy and tired/ a bit of both, I'm not sure. But besides Salah I didn't even think they were that great, and then we let in a goal on either side of half time and half of our feckwit players lose their composure and fed right into them and the game was gone.
It was incredible. We have been doing pretty well the last few months and Liv are having a poor season. And we go and get the worst beating in our history. Bizarre. And Villa smashed them this season - why couldn’t that have been us?! Whyyyyyyyy (quietly blows own brains out)

Even my mate that's a Liverpool supporter was sort of like "Yeah this is the best we've played all year and every bounce has gone our way". Even the xG was absurd, like 2.8 or something for 7 fecking goals. Unreal

That's why xG etc is BS IMO, and to all that stats people, don't bother, that's my opinion and nothing you say will ever change it

Like an average golfer not hitting any amazing shots and getting 4 birdies in a row or something. Other than the last goal, they didn't really come from our mistakes, they just scored.

I really like the insight that this post has.

Correct it won't change how much progress has been made but it will change (or should) opinions on certain players, some of them gave up and that is not ever acceptable no matter who you are

They are human beings - they make mistakes. I can't hate or be negative to players who have given me soo much joy this season, the effort has been great to see - especially with how many games they have played. Disappointing result on the day, but won't change the progress in the context of the season.

I have 2 explanations:

1) I mentally block awful man utd results
2) I was used to utd being dreadful so it wasn’t as shocking as it is now

But you don’t care at all do you

I have this weird thing where I go back and watch our heavy defeats. It's quite masochistic but it's also funny to see how awful we were on the day. Some of the defending for the 6-1 at home to Tottenham is genuinely Sunday league level.

Our 'best' performance in a heavy defeat is still the 6-1 at home to Man City. We fought till the end and let in 3 goals in the last 5 minutes going hell for leather despite being a man down. At the time I was raging, but just shows how Fergie's teams were giants generally.

They are human and I'm not often very critical of players and performances, but to give up is hard to forgive, especially against our biggest rivals

I could understand your point if it was a frequent thing - but it was one game.

I don’t know if I will trust them again. This stays unforgiveable. It’s going to take a long time for me to forget this. It is not the first time this group has let us down big time.

I remember under ferguson Barca truly battered us in both finals but we kept the scoreline respectable. 7-0 scorelines are hard to take especially since we are actually a better team than liverpool (at least judging from the table)

Will this get followed up by a complete collapse? I genuinely don ‘t know, it would not surprise me.

I don't give a damn about the 7-0 result because our heads went down after a couple of goals and I stopped watching after 4-0 because I knew where this was heading. I have never missed a min in any of the games this season. I was preparing myself for anything because I knew full well that the players will be tired because although Erik Ten Hag has mixed things around within the team, majority of the players have played a part of the all the games since the world cup either from the start or from the bench. It is very difficult to keep focus in all the games all the time. I totally understand because it showed from all the players, especially from Casemiro and Martinez who are fighters any day. They are all humans and we should be merciful of them. Erik Ten Hag is very demanding and it took a toll on them. I rather we lose a match 7-0 than lose players to injury. I'm sure Erik Ten Hag will give his players a day off to get their heads straight and they will get back with a vengeance.

I'm very sure that this team will do very well after this. I hope we can rub it in Liverpool faces come end of the season.

You’re taking it remarkably well. But maybe that’s the way to be.

I agree with your last paragraph. The curve is upward despite the blips (calamitous or otherwise). Finishing above Liv will be a consolation, for sure, better still if they miss out on Top 4! (Feck those guys to hell, by the way).

yeah.. I felt bad when Klopp had lost players to injury earlier this season and the season before this but I will never support him ever henceforth because he wanted his players to humiliate a team who put their heads down, which is like kicking someone who is already down. I hate that and have never appreciated that. Pep is fantastic manager in that way, he never wants his team to humiliate any team. It's always 4-0 with him, they can definitely score more.

Last season they slowed down after 3 or 4.

Utd played utter shit for 45 mins and got what they deserved, the worst part is Liverpool didn't even have to work hard for any of the goals. They didn't cut Utd to ribbons with ease over and over, they were basically just given the goals. Utd players just gave up.

If a team is going to present you with the opportunity to score goals in that position you take it.

This is such a weird post. City literally beat us 6-3 this season. United are Pool’s biggest rivals, why would they go easy on us?

The 7-0, though a bad result, is just one game.

That result puts it out of mind now.

When was the last time we were so good at home? Honestly can't recall a time since the Fergie days that Old Trafford seemed like the fortress it should be.

Probably since 10/11, league only, where we dropped 2 points at home! We threw away a 2-0 lead to WBA.

I'd really, really like to think that's how it is. And if we continue ticking along like we did against Betis, I will.

Also of course I'm really curious who's your family member in the NHL, but you're not going to tell us are you. :)

We've played 21 games since the World Cup finished, winning 16, drawing 3 and losing 2. That's pretty good going.

The two losses have come against the leaders (when we faced them without our best player), and a bogey team who are pretty much out of every competition and playing what is literally their cup final of the season.

Our fixture list is gruelling (we've had a game every 3 days since the restart) and our squad isn't as large as some of the other teams around us.

Let's just all stay calm and trust the rebuild process.

EtH has done an incredible job taking this team from where it was post Rangnick to where it is now...and we have a trophy to boot.

The first season of his reign was never going to be a smooth ride. It was always going to be turbulent, but the overall trajectory is good, we're winning more games than any other season post Fergie, and we're still looking strong to add another trophy to the Carabao Cup. Our team is still a few signings away from being complete, but we are getting there.

It's a shit feeling to lose to Liverpool, especially by such a heavy scoreline, but I'm not as crestfallen as I was following the 5-0 and 4-0 from last season.

We were realistically never in for the title given the start we had, but a comfortable 3rd place finish would be excellent. If a trophy & top 4 was offered at the start of the season, I'm guessing most of us would have taken that. So let's just get behind the team and push them on in the competitions we're in.
So #ETHout

It feels so good to make Old Trafford a fortress again after all these years. Our away record is not the best and shows that we still lack a ball playing CM and a ST to compete with city for a title.

As I said after the Liverpool game win the next 3 games in Europa, league and FA Cup and it will make that game a blip. Our mentality under Ten Haag is elite which is insane considering where we where 8 months ago.

Give Ten Haag a top striker and ball playing CM and we will win the league in certain of it

I'm certain as well. Frenkie needs to stop being a bitch and join United. I feel he's the missing piece. Get Osimhen too or maybe a cheaper option. As long as we don't have to rely on a crippled Martial and Wout fecking Weghorst.

Haha, I would but his agent tracks his name online and I wouldn't want to bring him into my Man Utd insanity posts...plus hes a Real Madrid fan so F him.

I've gotten a lot of interesting insight into professional sports culture through him and his friends though...for example in todays game these players are so dedicated (diet, rest, different therapies) that the partying/social media obsessed types on teams are often not well liked...and are often shunned after a while. That happened a few times with some of his teammates and I can't help but think of a few cast aways from us that have been let go and we seem the better...

And as I mentioned in my post, he talks a lot about how your mentality needs to shift towards playing as a job to be successful. Those that are too up or too down often have the most trouble. Players rarely get as upset or dejected as fans do, and often it's the manager simply refocusing on new tactics or methods that turn around results (if the team has enough talent). Thats why I think ETH has been so successful and will continue to be...he puts players in the best position possible to succeed.

Lastly, he tells me often players know who is the best at any given time to play given their form and mentality. When a manager plays senior players, players making a ton of money, or players that whine the most over more deserving...other players hate it. It can also create lazier practices as players don't feel the need to keep their positions, and players below them don't see the point in trying to win positions. It's basically a poison pill for a team. I truly think this is main thing that did in Ole....ETH has, IMHO, been exceptional at this and I think thats why the players have been so devoted to him and his tactics. He basically has seemed to tick every box.
