I have a family member that is in the NHL. He tells me there are days they just don't have it, and it can snowball during a game. He can't explain it, and it frustrates the hell out of everyone on the team, but it's just a loss of mental sharpness that seems to permeate if more than one person is off that game. Once the seal is broken it really can start to "go" and those are the games they tend to get blown out in. He's good and on a good team, so it doesn't happen often, but he thinks its hilarious when the media attribute it to a million things other than it just being "one of those days"...we frankly all have them, and most of the players can surprisingly move on faster than most fans. He once missed a huge shot late in a game and I was somewhat surprised with how unaffected he was that night at dinner after the game. Seasons are marathons.
Thats exactly how I view the other day. These players have played an enormous amount for many months now...especially the WC players. Almost all of the games have been supremely competitive and necessitated acute mental sharpness. It looked to me after the 2nd goal that things just "went'...and they lost their fight. They knew they were losing, and the players just didn't have the reserve to recover. It's been mentally and physically exhausting few months and it came to a head.
And thats really it. It was bound to happen...yes the degree was alarming, but not anything that makes it "worse" or endemic. It just was one of those days...where a run of many intense games converged with a very motived squad in a very hard place to play. It just gave.
I never felt we were in the title race or even up to that standard as yet, but we are a very solid top 4 team that has the chance to put together a seriously successful season to build on with multiple trophies. Those are all still in play. We are trending upwards, without question...and frankly a win, tie, or near loss would not change our overall position. thats just the reality.
People can moan, and talk about changes, etc etc etc. I get it. But, for me...it was just one of those days. It stings but really changes nothing. And frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the players mostly feel the exact same way.
