Onana has not worked out. We need a new keeper.

To early to call, he looks worse than he is with that shity back line. Let’s resume after the season, we can always do a Chelsea and buy a replacement for the replacement.

In case he and Antony don’t massively improve the next months, those 150 wasted mios go on EtHs book and him only. Club did nearly everything he wanted in terms of buys

Simple fact is a successful Utd keeper need to be a great shot stopper. Schmeichel, Van Der Sar, De Gea all were. Onana isnt.

But its only been a few months, lets see how he is towards end of season.

Personally i dont give two hoots about keepers playing out from the back, i care more about clean sheets. Jan Oblak is my type of keeper.
Many of the best teams play with a keeper similar to Onana, why must United have an old school keeper?

The Champions League finalists last season had Ederson and Onana in goal, neither are great shot stoppers.

It was always cynical to make De Gea the scapegoat for last season's failure to win the FA Cup and the Europa League. As for the FA Cup, we were never going to beat City even if we had peak Yashin in goal. There's no getting around the fact that De Gea cost us the second leg against Sevilla, but most of us seem to have forgotten than we lost the tie to Sevilla with two late own goals in the first leg that were in no way De Gea's fault. But let's blame De Gea for throwing away the EL trophy, but why does anyone give a shit about that anyway? We had secured CL qualification by finishing in the top four and when you look at the stats our defensive record was actually very good. Where we fell apart in the PL was in attack and no one can possibly deny that. But because the hatred of De Gea became so visceral (especially after the Benrahma fiasco) the case for a new keeper stayed into the ludicrous argument that a modern keeper would help us score more goals by helping us retain the ball long and "recycling possession". Not all of us but a lot of fell for this argument so we got rid of De Gea (after withdrawing the offer he agreed to, which was shoddy business by the club but few cared about that) and we're not reaping what we sowed.

Onana is the same height but weighs over 15 kg more than DDG.

Im incredibly frustrated with him and have been very critical of his performances up to now, plus his start with us has been underwhelming at best, but its a bit extreme to write him off. It just feels as though as a unit, and a team we're yet to click and find our rhythm but i just feel it will come and there are signs of life in us, albeit small.

And whilst i am frustrated with him, i thought he was key in us nearly getting a result at Arsenal, which isnt easy at the moment so im clinging onto that as a positive!

DDG is thin for his height. It may help with his agility, but it means he's weak physically. Onana seems too bulky for his height. He has no issue with the physicality aspect, but seems heavy with his jumping step.

Weird how it seems we just go from one extreme to another extreme whereas what we need is balance.

I just don't understand, how incredible were Inter at defending in the CL for them to make it to the final. How many shots did he face? Because for us, it feels like every shot is likely to be a goal.
He/They faced out of form Barca out of form AC Milan, Porto Benfica. And their defense bar early season was great.

Bit heavy isnt he? Not very mobile it seems. Was he always like this?

The handling errors and bad passes are bad, but you'd hope that's just a bad run of form/confidence that isn't going to continue long term.

What's concerning me most is the way he deals with one on ones. He seems to make himself as small as possible, it's bizarre. For the winning goal last night he just shrunk and made it easy to score. The first Forest goal where he did his best seal impression and flopped around on the floor a bit. This concerns me more because it's clearly a learned technique . I just don't know what he's trying to do.

Yup. Big blunders happen, hopefully he can move on from them.
It's his lack of presence, positioning, and reflexes, that's frightening.

Onana is the same height but weighs over 15 kg more than DDG.

This definitely agrees with the "eye test" of his shot-stopping!

Pep had managed Bravo too but was allowed to get rid of him. I dont think our board would sanction that because they want the dividends.
How much did Bravo cost?

It is ok to make mistakes in cheap punts. Not in very expensive ones though (if I am not mistaken only Kepa and Alisson cost more than Onana).

Still too early to say, but I don't believe that he will be much better than De Gea.

Thats what happens when youve got no defence and the keeper is having to come out a deal with things his defenders should have dealt with.

Sure, except by post shot xG he's been catastrophically bad thus far too. 17 non-penalty goals conceded against 15.4 PSxG is -1.6 in 10 games; that's Kepa 19/20-level atrocious if extrapolated over a full season.

He's looking like a terrible buy so far, not a great shot stopper and even his lauded passing ability is a bit shit.

He's really just another in a long line of calamitous signings we've made. I was reading that he had the 9th highest shots saved percentage in Serie A last season and even reading through the inter forums almost all admit that he isn't the top class goalkeeper that we were led to believe.

He was at Ajax for 7 years or so but no English team came in for him during that time, he ran his contract down and signed with Inter for a 3+million yearly salary. The fact that we paid 55 million Euro one year after he was available on a free transfer is quite frankly laughable.

He will get better, not exactly a high bar to clear at this point. I just want to see him come off his line, particularly to deal with crosses. The passing ability is one thing but we were constantly told that DDG being rooted to his line was a massive problem and yet Onana seems to be even more prone to stand there frozen and passive than Dave ever was. I kind of feel like we were sold a lemon at this point but hopefully it is just nerves and he will assert himself more as he settles.

My biggest frustration is that I am certain Kovar has a higher ceiling and we sold him for pocket change to buy a trendier name.

@Raees called this in his Pythagoras in Boots video.

I linked to the 1v1 section and he says.....

"Mixed bag on one on ones"
"Not the same level of presence as Nauer or Allison"
"Passive and over cautious with leads to him being too static and not closing down with intensity."
"Leaves himself strandard in no mans land"
"Needs to become more decisive and aggressive."

Spot on from what we have seen so far.

In possession though, the problem with Onana is that he has massive highs and massive lows. He will shank balls out of play but then make ridiculous weak foot long balls look easy. He's a very inconsistent player who tends to thrive when there is stability around him and then he can focus on the possession side of things but United are anything but stable and our build up phase especially with likes of Casa and Bruno in midfield is never going to be elite. Difficult to see how he avoids further issues unless the team as a whole gets better.

Totally agree.

Bit of a chicken and egg scenario, but if Ten Hag wants to play out of the back, what do you change first?

Midfielders and defenders who we know are comfortable playing out of the back?
Or first change the keeper who can?

I tend to think ETH got it the wrong way round and may end up ruining Onana's chance of success because, as you say there is no stability, and a lack of ability, around him.

A one year deal for DDG and using the 50mil in another area, like signing a press resistant midfielder, would have been wiser. João Palhinha for me - who i would love a breakdown on!

Outfield players.

Casillas was not top tier ball playing GK. Yet he's the GK for that dominant Spain NT. And they're still dominanting in possession, and not having the scare Victor Valdes occasional risky pass may bring. People are too blind by DDG shotstopping decline which exposing his other flaws even more that they' don't care about overall shot stopping. How thing is with Onana, we're stuck in middle of the road (even in funding other signing).

Not necessarily have to extend DDG. We could have got Raya. He's cheap enough and capable enough that we can wait for the super GK before committing huge sum.

Looked great last season behind a functional defensive line. Plays behind lindlechuckle now and an endless rotation of players and looks like a keeper with zero confidence. Sure he’ll be fine once he settles in and plays behind a settled defensive unit.

I don’t know how to put it but he looks so ‘stiff’ for a keeper. Looks like another bad investment. How have the club signed off on this for 50M? I don’t believe Ten Hag has absolute authority. Added to this his whole show off against Maguire rubbed me the wrong way. You need to be able to walk the talk.

Any Ajax, Inter fans? Do we have any hope or is this the level we can expect going forward?
His appealing to the fans by attacking Maguire growingly bothers me looking back as he continues to drop clanger after clanger. I don't see him recovering from such a bad start. Dave was nowhere near this bad at first and he had just turned 20, he wasn't a 27yo keeper supposedly in his prime.

I knew that he won't be anything special in the goalkeeping department like how DDG was, but really, even the calmness and ability to have the ball and pass to open players is looking to dissipate, corroded away from him bit by bit.

What happened to the player that was so calm and decisive, the same one that played in the UCL final?

De Gea was nowhere near as bad as people made out last season. He was still very good. He just wasn’t as good as he once was and it was obvious he wasn’t comfortable with playing out the back.

There’s nothing to suggest so far Onana is comfortable either and the fact he’s a considerably worse keeper means this could be a disaster decision.

Changing your goalkeeper is a massive decision and given this club has got pretty much every decision wrong in recent years…was obviously a stupid risk trusting them with this.

Still very early days.

The way he deals with one on ones is just bizarre. All great United keepers were great shot stoppers too. Going with a "modern" keeper who isn't could prove to be a costly decision.

Totally agree. Looks to big or muscular which then makes him look less agile.

He's had a horrible start and I'm far from convinced so far. Feels like karma for the way the club treated David.

Raya was the player I wanted at the sort of fee being talked about, but I was assured that we needed someone better than that

Passing is team game, which demands a lot from outfield players, too. Also IMO transformative players are outfield players. Sure, Onana may be a huge upgrade on DDG in distribution when thing settles down in front of him, but the idea that a ball playing GK even one of the highest rated with their foot can suddenly make the whole team pass better from every area of the pitch is fantasy.

When a team pass well and dominate, they would prefer pinning the other team back, so however good the GK with foot, he is less involved. Ball playing skill is valued when opposition press high, and you take risk for high reward beating the pressing and exploit space. Not every team press high.

There was no better option available even if we spend Onana fee last window. Some people just think Neuer, Allison level GK are abundant, that we just need to pay the cash whenever we like to pick one of them. Played right into Inter hand, where they don't need to spend that much or see much downgrade in Onana replacement.
