Omar Berrada | Man Utd CEO

clubS. His position was for the City group of clubs not just City.

You can say a lot of things about City, but they are well run with good people in position… or they’re replaced.

Between that and Ratcliffes track record for surrounding himself with good managers, it feels a good move

So ‘proper football men’ just means ‘men who worked at football clubs’ then?… even if those clubs were charged with financial impropriety in some of the areas they worked?

Doesn’t seem airtight to me. He’s no more of a ‘football man’ than Ed Woodward could claim to be.

I’m happy to be proved wrong but the excitement seems wildly desperate

No, it is a promotion but he has been chief footballing officer for the whole city group. So his knowledge is football first which is much better for us.
Don’t think so if mean where he held specific title but COO is basically second to CEO…and of a huge group of clubs.

The day to day experience of a COO should help decisions made at CEO as he should understand them and be able to use his own experience to ok them.

So, another learn on the job hire, then? Hopefully Blanc can be his mentor.

Sounds like United think City will be found not guilty if we are poaching their higher ups as if they were found guilty someone like Berrada would have to be complicit right?

He was COO at a club who's done well, and has a commercial background. I would have thought that'd make him a decent candidate for CEO. The only thing it indicates to me is that we're getting somebody who can organise the structure of the club (hence previous job as COO) rather than a pure finance person.

And without a media circus.

No one suggested this guy. Media (mainly lazy feckers) said a couple of names that any of us could have come up with, then BAM… done.

No fuss, no drama. The proper way to do business.

Blanc has only been CEO of INEOS’ sporting division for a year.

Berrada has been the chief footballing officer of the best performing sporting group in football. He might need to learn a bit more about the sponsorship side, but he fully knows in depth how to run the footballing side of a club. The most important part. What more do you want?

He was head of sponsorship at Barcelona for 8 years.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Sir Dave Brailsford, Jean-Claude Blanc and now Omar Berrada.

It looks very interesting, but can anybody tell me what Blanc and Berrada will do respectively? I thought Blanc was supposed to be the CEO considering his previous experience.

Blanc is on the board but is the CEO of INEOS’ sporting division. Berrada is the CEO of United. So will answer to the board, but manage the business and football side of United. On the business side he will be managing finance, marketing and sponsorships etc. On the footballing side likely the DOF, head of recruitment and Chief of negotiations will report to him (depending on how that structure is built - I’m basing that in the rumours that say figures like Ashworth will be DOG and Mitchell would be head of recruitment).

Now United can sign star players without worrying FFP.
BOOM!

Jean-Claude Blanc will continue to be CEO of all of INEOS Sport, overseeing new investment in Man United. He was probably too much of INEOS man for Glazers to be comfortable him becoming Man United CEO, as CEO should represent owners and they are still majority owners.

To make things even more confusing I propose we hire Laurent Blanc as our new manager, instead of EtH. Then when people say "Blanc" it will be "which Blanc"? Perfect!

To be fair Blanc is probably a better manager than Ten Hag, at least the version of Ten Hag we got this season, the crap version.

Everyone who’s been made CEO of any club or any business ever, had a different role before?

Every promotion for that matter.

Maybe the idea of United looking for experienced, best in class people isn't a bad one. Sure it's not as enthralling as gambling on talent realizing itself in situ but the club is on a losing streak with this stuff.

Blanc has only been CEO of INEOS’ sporting division for a year.

He's previously been CEO of Juventus and the French Tennis ASsociateion. He's vastly experienced.

Best performing sporting group courtesy of a cheat code, so how will he handle having to make the finances work to comply with FFP or make sure that he keeps bringing in bigger and better sponsorship deals to ensure the club can meet its obligations, enhance its infrastructure and improve on the pitch?

If he doesn't have any experience as a CEO he may be great, may be ok or he may be woeful. Can United afford to take the chance? In its current state a club like United should be hiring experienced people to lift it out of the mire.

Fair missed that he was CEO of Juve.

City are only accused of not complying up to 2018. He was only in the relevant role from 2016 onwards. So yes maybe 2 years of impropriety, but they’ve been compliant for the last 5 years. (He is also not seen to be implicated in this)

We’re hiring an incredibly well regarded executive in the football world and you are immediately bringing the doom and gloom. Ever the pessimist.

Excellent news, he has been key for City ti being where they are now, and was also part of Barcelona’s directive on their most successful period in history.

Ratcliffe knows what he is doing, I originally preferred Qatar, but Sir Jim is silencing his doubters with movements such as this hire.

Oh I'm not suggesting any involvement in impropriety, just that his experience has benefited from seemingly endless finances, he could struggle having to work with more restriction. Like I said, hoping that Blanc can provide that mentor relationship via INEOS to help him grow.

Ever the pessimist.

I am not!

Since 2018 we have spent more!

Man United hire someone a CEO with sporting experience 'we should have hired someone else'.

I was against Ratcliffe coming in. Thought it just be more of the same with a British twist, and specifically wanted the Qataris as they would be emulating city, getting the best of the best available to run the club from the ground up.

This is exactly what Ratcliffe has been doing thus far and I'm happy to hold my hands up and admit, it's looking like I was dead wrong and the signs are positive.

I get that he was a City guy, but his twitter account history is kinda hilarious. Guy was there retweeting every bad article about United. sheesh

I think it was written in the press that he reported to Tixi Begiristain who is City's current DOF.

Its always been said that fans are also an integral part of Manchester United. So does that also make us football people too? We the peeps.

;);)

I think 'football man' is a meaningless term. Very large companies are managed or CEOed by folks of various backgrounds. There is no obvious and clear path to being a successful CEO or everyone would have done it by now.

Even in football; Tony Bloom (Brighton) is a poker player. Mathew Bedham (Brentford) was a hedge fund manager.
