Ole Gunnar Solskjær | Managerial Watch

Nothing wrong with Saha, but for club status the comparison is embarressing.

Ole:
366 games
126 goals
54 assists
Ole in the CL (19 goals and 11 assists)
6 PL trophies, 1 CL trophy and some cups
Was our top scorer twice and retired at the club to manage the reserves.

Saha:
1245 games

42 goals
17 assist
CL: 4 goals and 2 assists
Never hit 10 goals in a season in the PL for us.
2 PL trophies, a CL and a League cup
Moved on to play for 4 other clubs after us.

He are not even remotely on par with eachother when it comes to status at the club. Different planets actually.

Ole scored more goals for us, he assisted more goals, he won more trophies and and he didn't move on to play for 7 more clubs compared to Andy Cole.
Ole had a higher goal contribution rate per 90 than RVN for us....and he was still here when Ruud left to play for other clubs.

Can you see why Ole is not on par with Saha when it comes to status at the club.......even when you remove THAT goal from the equation?

Had no idea he played so many games for us.

;)

Ole had an excellent eye for goal especially coming off the bench but he was a squad player, an excellent one but a squad player nevertheless. Some people seem to forget that SAF wanted to sell him to Spurs in 1998. The fee was agreed as well and the deal collapsed because he wanted to stay here.

It was Martin Edwards that wanted to sell him. Fergie told him to turn it down and stay.

I feel like some are trying to downplay his effect as a player just because his manager stint didn’t work out. There’s no need for that. The guy is a true United man through and through
Do we think he's the best striker to have been happy with a support role in PL history? It's such a weird one, I get he loved United but he must have wanted to play and he knew he was good enough to start for most PL teams. Particulalry with how well he started when he was first choice, I can't think of anyone else even close to his level who didn't move for game time.

Maybe he fully understood that trophies are won and lost by squads and that squad players are very important in the modern game. I never understood why the term squad players is considered as derogatory by some United fans. Squad players won us the treble (Ole and Teddy) and nearly costed us the treble as well (Phil Neville, Arsenal semi final replay ie penalty). Top squad players in a top side will get ample game time, they will win stuff, they are instrumental in keeping the first team players on its toes and they can write their name in football history. What would have Ole won if he played for Spurs?

Yeah it's up to the individual I guess, I'm not sure what I would do - I'd probably rather start every game and not win a trophy than be known as a 'super sub'. Ole is different though as he has the treble winning moment which must have been worth it by a long shot.

ME would never try and sell a player behind SAF's back.

I think you should reread Fergies autobiography mate. Edwards did all sorts of shit behind Fergies back.

Martin Edwards and Alan Sugar had agreed a fee – £5.5m, I think. But the gaffer called me into his office and said: “I don’t really want to sell you because if you stay here you’ll play enough football.” That was enough for me. I didn’t want to go; my agent did. He said he had never met a person as stubborn as me. But I was right. I normally am!

Solskjaer has also claimed that he still has the fax, signed by Edwards and Sugar, of the transfer that never was.

You will understand how close I was to leaving Old Trafford when you know there is a fax, signed by Martin Edwards and signed by Alan Sugar, the clubs had agreed a fee and they were just waiting for my signature. I still have it in my possession.

The gaffer called me into his office and said the clubs have agreed but I don’t want you to go. He said I’d be a big part of my squad. He also said the conversation would be between the two of us. If he had said I am sorry to see you go but all the best in your career, then I would have gone. But he wanted me to stay and so I didn’t sign the fax. Hopefully I have paid back the £5.5m that had been agreed with Spurs!

When you walk out of his office and he says you will be part of his squad you walk out ten feet tall. I was as happy as Larry. It is strange to see that fax. The manager deserves the credit for all the success I have had. That was just one example of the kind of manager he is.

I am too blunt for my own good. There's a very good reason for that but I don't feel like sharing it on the public forum.
No worries mate! Your assessment was fair enough, and everybody has their own posting style:)

Luckily United have been blessed with some of the finest players in the game! Like you said, would love Solskjær in his prime now, would have been our best attacker by a mile imo.

a lot of his time with us we played with 2 up top, so he did get a good amount of playing time. If you look at his numbers from 99 to 2002-03 season, he was appearing in basically 30+ pl games a season. It would be very hard to see and manage playing time, in this era of only one up front, a squad having 3 to 4 genuine quality strikers in their squad.

No matter what level of fame you get to, that probably never gets normal

Chills. Literal chills.

With slightly better camera quality and some background music that could honestly be the opening scene of a Solskjær biopic

-cut to black-
The Baby Faced Assassin
-cut to black again-
Classic Norwegian violin playing. Drone-shot over Kristiansund that ends on a rough-looking pitch. Ole as a child skipping past the opponents and scoring his 3rd goal of the game and grinning.
Etc.

What a reception wow.

Any idea why is he there? He scored the job in India?

Did some quick googling. Apparently travelling to 3 cities there to talk about his career and life alongside Andy Mitten.

That's louder than City's treble parade (with the help of background song).

That's fecking awesome. Great support. I'd love Ole to get a bit of a random managerial job and bring a bit of star quality to a league with potential. He's no Robbie Fowler style "pick a name" appointment, he's actually a decent coach who's won things. I suspect he's happy chilling in Norway though which is a bit of a shame.

You'd think he'd get a job easily in Norway or other Scandinavian countries.

In hindsight he was a decent manager.

Remember the An evening with Legends event they had at Manchester with Ole last year in May?

We're having the same thing in India with him in 3 cities.

One of my all time favourites growing up, when he came on you just knew he would bag a couple big chances and more often than not, calmly slot them home.

Although it didn't work out here, was easily my favourite pose Sir Alex manager and hope we see him back in a dugout soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if he takes over the national team if Solbakken gets the boot. Maybe teach this youngster "Haaland" or whatever something about finishing.

He's still young but needs to get back in the game soon.
Maybe another good stint in Norway and then has a crack at a Championship team.

Roy Keane should do the same. Not manage in Norway but manage at a lower level to prove himself.

What a tremendous reception for a proper legend. I love solksjaer with every fibre of my body, never loved a man utd player more than solksjaer and doubt I ever will again. So pleased to see him getting the love he deserves. Favourite manager post SAF too who got far more criticism than he deserved.

He would get a premier league job if he really wanted it. He’s miles better than championship level and his stint at Utd is largely downplayed. We played our best football post Fergie under him by a long shot.

I don't think so. We were wildly inconsistent.

The football was more exciting than LVG and Mourinho at least though.

The jury's out on his abilities. His signings weren't great. He spent a fortune on AWB, Maguire, Sancho, DVDB. 250m approximately on shite.

Would you consider any of those good signings?

He wouldn't get a job in the Premier and his football was awful despite being slightly better than the shit ETH and Co have served.

I agree.
I think most PL clubs would prefer to take a chance on many others than Ole.
It doesn't mean he can't be a good manager but he has to repair his reputation somewhere by doing a good job.

Didn't show it at Cardiff.

Thought he was getting the Sweden job unless that was just agent making a bigger thing of it to try to get him another job.

I could see him as Norway manager given the youth bubbling under the established players (Oscar Bobb) and he did alright with the ones coming through at Man. United under him.

Have they genuinely not sacked Solbakken?!

See if you can get the talk of the devil's podcast. It's on Amazon music. Andy Mitten who is there with Ole is on the pod with Laurie And Carl Anka of Athletic . Really good listen , that's how I learnt that Ole is doing a 3 city tour in India.

That Cardiff job was an impossible job. Lampard and Gerrard have managed prem jobs and Ole was far better than both.

Cardiff wasnt an impossible job, and being better than Lamps and Gerrard doesn't mean he was necessarily good

Please tell me how Cardiff wasn’t an impossible job. They had arguably the most batshite crazy ownership the premier league has ever seen at the time? What did they do before and after to suggest Ole was the problem. You have a deep rooted dislike of Ole and I’m guessing it stems to your support of Mourinho during his time.

I don't think anyone could keep that team up. It was like QPR 2013 except the squad was way worse.
They actually spent a fair bit of money. Ole got 9 new players of his own and they looked worse. Tough to not put a large portion on him for the Cardiff stint.
