I'm a bit torn on this one I think. On one hand it's nice to see the young lads get a game like this, on the other hand though in my book it's not really how you introduce the youth in. This type of selection reeks of LVG's throwing young players in, your Blacketts or McNairs who months later end in League Ones of this world.

This game was just to save first team from the trip and rest for league game.

Greenwood I agree. He was so isolated today that I forgot about him. Pretty dire selection though isn't it

It's mind boggling that you are moaning about selection in an unconsequential match which has given our youngsters valuable gametime and also allowed our senior players to rest. I think it was the right team to play and had Chong finished the sitter, it'd have been a comfortable win. The state of our fans.

Fecking hell.
No club anywhere are relying on loads of kids, but a good few of them today blatantly have potential.
Greenwood, Gomes, Garner, Levitt, Laird all did themselves no harm today.

Greenwood and Gomes have the best chances I agree. The rest of them I would be very surprised. Oh and we are relying on these kids. Look at what happened when Martial got injured. We throw them in way too much at this point.

Does it really make a difference if you finish 1st or 2nd in a Europa league group? United finished 2nd in the group in 2016-17 and that didn't stop them winning the Cup
Makes the last 32 on average easier, but it’s no big deal if we don’t do it. A bigger deal will be not winning a straightforward game at home.

That has nothing to do with LvG though. These players were simply mostly pretty shit. Same as most of our youngsters right now. Actually I don't think any of them are anything special at all. Would be surprised if anyone of the bunch out there today made it here. Gomes and Greenwood might have the best chances.

Look at what Greenwood already has shown as someone who just turned 18. He scored some good goals already. If you dont think he is a special talent than i dont know who is...

I don't think that the game tells us a thing and we are not supposed to rely on them anyway. One of the worst things that you can do for young players is to introduce them in a weak lineup full of youth players, if we really wanted to test them, we would have done it one by one over the course of the last 4 months. This game was just used as a resting opportunity for the first team with no care for results or performance, in the great scheme of things it makes sense but it means that it has no value.

Agree, its really disappointing as well because there is a lot of talent in that side.

Game meant nothing and I wouldn’t judge him on this. But I’m glad fans are so pi??ed off with him not even this nothing game gets a bly.

LVG's European campaign involved throwing Nick Powell on to try save us in the Champions league before being embarrassed by Midtjylland and smashed by Liverpool. Not playing the youth team in a dead rubber after comfortable qualification.

Very valuable game time indeed. Surely did wonders to their confidence.

We definitely aren’t relying on kids, when Martial got injured we moved Rashford upfront.
If you watch Garner and Laird inparticular and think they have no chance then I can only strongly disagree with you.

Good to rest the first team for this. We need to cement our 9th position in the league. Astana beating Utd is interesting. Is that the worst side we have lost to ? Ole setting all kinds of records

The game was quite telling though. We can't rely on any of these guys. There was not one player out there that looked remotely anything special. Good luck putting our faith into these youngsters.
It's the same story every year. Our fans delude themselves into thinking the latest crop of youngsters are another Class of 92, then reality eventually hits.

Yeah, I'm sure they'd have been better off staying at home and instead we should have played the likes of Martial and Rashford. Can't believe I'm even arguing this point tbh but nothing surprises me on the Caf anymore.

Didn't mean the European campaign though, just the overall approach of throwing in random young players for the sake of being young. I think that the biggest bonus from today is what @roonster09 mentioned.

The Danish team we lost to in EL in LVG second season was worse.

As I've said I missed out in him. I almost consider him a first teamer anyway. He obviously is a very talented lad. Not sure about the other guys though. Anyway they shouldn't have been thrown in all together today. But our lack of proper squad building in the summer doesnt leave us much other choice if we want to rest some first teamers.

Yeah we should've played our first team in this match. The level of IQ in this thread is astoundingly low even given the dwindling standards of the Caf.

This game Ole gets a bye from me. It was a write-off from the start and I knew we'd lose but Ole had to rest our ridiculously thin first team squad. I'm not gonna slate him for this game, outcome or what he says in the press conference.

We will see. We've heard this a lot about many many players that ended up absolutely nowhere.

This! Any Red who's complaining about this result or selection needs to have a hard look at himself or start supporting other team. fecking hell, no other selection would've made sense given our squad and injuries.

We should have done better against that lot eben with that selection mind. Also it's Ole's and the board's fault our squad is paper thin.

I agree about LVG, I don't think this is the same though. Good rest for the first team, important with missing players and another game next midweek.

Ole has been poor this season but no need for criticism today, a good chance such an inexperienced team would bet beaten away from home.

Next 3 league games are huge, anything less than 4 points and Poch will be hanging over him even more. He did what he has to do today to set team up for the more important games.

Average age of outfield players who played the game is 19 years, again this is a nothing game and most of the players made the trip just to rest the first team. Only first team players who traveled are the ones who are back from injury or haven't played many games. .

Midtjylland.

Straight copy from Google that. Can't spell their name sorry.
Ha. No worries. Who was the team that we played in pre-seson when Ole played against his son? They were poor aswell. My colleague put 50 eur on Astana after I told him our team selection. He got 3/1 on that so he will be chuffed

I agree but I hope you know I am FIRMLY Ole out? This game exists in a vacuum for me. Onto the next one that counts.

I hope you know I'm Ole out too btw. His intentions are good but he doesn't have the skill required to be our manager but that doesn't matter in this match.

Kristiansund I believe. Another copy from google. :D

I do think a bit of wool is being pulled over the fans eyes with the way some of the kids are spoken about. We hear a lot of spin from Ole himself and others about this generation being super special etc. when its most likely a huge amount of the players who played today will not make it long term with us. That's no massive slagging off, its just quite common.

But also if you're going to put faith in kids ahead of signing older players, you have to then give those kids the best platform they can have to succeed.

AZ Alkmaar 2nd in the Dutch league are far from a straightforward game. United have dropped points to worse teams at home already this season and i don't expect United to play close to a full strength team for that match either.
