I don’t even want to talk about his well documented issues like coaching, tactics and in-game management anymore, because we’ve banged on about all that enough. What I need to talk about is his man-management this season, an issue no one has talked about which I feel has been very costly to him, and us.
I feared this would happen at the start of the season, but he’s really been found out with a bigger and better squad. His man-management has been shown up to be very overrated. No, there hasn’t been anarchy like under Mourinho, but there is absolutely no other reason that he kept Bailly, Donny and Jesse aside from stockpiling players he didn’t need, just for insurance. A common retort to this point would be ‘look at City and Chelsea, but we’re the only ones not allowed to have depth’. City and Chelsea rotate in an exemplary manner and the likes of Bernardo, Ake, Chalobah and Ziyech are all used regularly, just not as much as the top players. I’m not expecting that from Ole, but I’m expecting Bailly to play when Maguire is injured and awfully out of form, Donny to play when you signed him for £37m LAST summer and Jesse to play when he gets 2 goals and 1 assist off the bench. Otherwise, he should have sold them. It’s no exaggeration to say that he’s utterly derailed Bailly and Donny’s career in particular.
I think there’s also no doubt that he’s lost a large portion of the dressing room now. It’s been clear for a while that the likes of Pogba and Ronaldo are very unhappy with his management, but I think that’s spread to the either squad, maybe bar some of the British lads and Fred. Cavani’s a less documented case of appalling man-management by Ole as well. No one’s fooling me that a homesick player decided to stick around just to score a goal at a full Old Trafford. Absolutely ridiculous, and I thought so at the time. He would have been given game time guarantees, and that’s now absolutely gone. Why can’t he start next to Ronaldo, and play the supporting, pressing role Benzema and Morata did?
Then you have Lingard and Mason liking Instagram posts from people they don’t even follow calling for his head, Sancho’s close friend calling for him to go and the leaks from Rashford’s team to Ornstein that he was bemused by Ole’s ‘focus of football’ comments. Remember, these young lads are supposed to be the ones benefiting most from playing under him. This is the entire friend group ‘coincidentally’ showing their own signs of annoyance with the manager. If he’s somehow even lost them, then what hope does he have?
His man-management was decent up to this season. Even Donny got a few more chances than he’s had this season, and Ole could argue that last season was his bedding in campaign. Ole’s even lost his best managerial trait this season. He is an absolute footballing dead-man walking and I cannot believe we’re seemingly giving him until the international break. It genuinely feels like sabotage, deliberately throwing 9 points and 3 6-pointers right down the bin, 1 in a competition we still have a chance in.
