I know that tram lines run relatively close to Old Trafford, across in the Quays, but would it be possible (with unlimited Qatari money), to bring a line right into a the lowest level of a new stadium? Might help with getting an extra 10-20K fans into the ground.

Dont understand why people want a new stadium rather than renovate Old Trafford. It's an iconic stadium and a huge part of our history. That being torn down would be a big shame IMO. You can't underestimate that value. Ultimately, it is a stadium made to watch football. Nothing will change that much that makes general seats and a football pitch and 2 locker rooms that outdated. Renovate, fix up, 100%. But a brand new stadium and tearing down the field that all the legends that shaped us graced? feck that

This, a thousand times this.

There are too many benefits to a comp new build in my opinion.

- Better atmosphere as the current roof design holds noise in each stand. Also better sight lines. Being at the top of the stands and not being able to see the rest of the ground sucks.
- New standing areas, single tier Stratford end.
- Better legroom, concourses, toilets for fans. More escalators to get fans to the upper tiers and lifts for disabled fans.
- Better facilities for the players and staff. Back room staff teams have grown massively since the 90’s.
- More seats, more corporate hospitality brings more revenue.

At the end of the day rebuilding the ground stand by stand doesn’t somehow preserve history. When you can’t stop looking back at the past is when you aren’t winning things in the present.

Build new and call it The Theatre of Dreams. That would be a nod to history while moving the club forward and making it future proof for another 100 years.

Vomit.

Qatar will be very sensitive to history and this entire soulless business so it’s a complete renovation for me.
They can still have the best stadium in the country

This is how I feel also. There's huge value to history and culture.

In 30 years time grandfathers will be bringing their grandson to games saying "This is where Rooney scored his bicycle kick" or "Scholes scored against Barca" or "I saw Cantonas last game when I was a small boy". Or "I saw Fergie give his farewell speech on this pitch in 2013. God rest his soul"

Sport is more than just about money and facilities.
The soul of a club is it's history, the story it's fans tell the next generation.
I'd prefer OT to just be continuously renovated over time. Modernise but with a view to the past. Like keep the red brick dugouts etc

Yes.

I'm sure they could do a top class renovation.

Got a bit dark near the end there!

Ha what the dugout part?

To me they're iconic. I remember them from the early 90s, so they're worth keeping.

A single tier Stratford End with standing is a very good idea for example. Maybe it's a reference to the past.

I think continuous renovation is best. Some seasons we'll have reduced capacity.

It was the SAF may he rest in peace part. Just out of nowhere

The question is though if you replace a brush head and a brush handle multiple times is it still the same brush?

Same can be said for OT.

New build. Start from fresh, take some of the most iconic parts of the stadium and incorporate them into the new one. There’s only so many times you can renovate something before you just have to replace it entirely. The history will always be there, it can’t be taken away. It’s already unrecognisable from the original building anyway so this idea we’d lose so much from replacing it is nonsense. Plus, the sooner you build a new ground the sooner you can start creating a new history within its walls.

They are part of a joint bid with Chile and Paraguay and Argentina. It’s not been awarded yet but the tournament can’t go to Asia or North America under FIFA rules to they stand a good chance.
Surely it's about time it goes back to football heartland that is western Europe?

As nice as a football village would be I'm not sure it's practical, an increase in capacity is something the area may not be able to handle, some of the land will be needed for car/coach parking and I suspect the public transport section is probably operating at max capacity
Those can go underground?

You ‘vomit’ at the idea of naming it after its current nickname? The name that was coined by Bobby Charlton?

yes.
no one actually calls it the Theater of Dreams, and Bobby Charlton saying it once doesn’t negate the fact that it’s another aspect of United’s voracious corporate branding

since when do stadiums have nicknames anyway?

Depends on the water table I suppose, they had to raise the pitch to get the drainage and under soil heating installed properly so I'm guessing not

Well some non-United fans call it the Old Toilet and we're known to call the Etihad the council house. Emirates is known as the Library. so yeah they have nicknames

You haven't watched a United home game on Swedish tv then, they say it pretty much every single time they move from the studio to the commentators and if they somehow don't do it then the commentators definitely will later.

Sounds like I’m missing out ;)

Yeah this is how I see it too. It needs too much work for a renovation but I’d love to see original OT elements built in to a new stadium somehow. No idea what or how, let the architects figure that out.

Option C, anything else is an expensive short term solution.

It just has to ensure it carries over the Old Trafford look/style but modernised imo.

People have been calling it the Theatre of Dreams for decades.

The poll above shows people split 50:50 on rebuild or renovate so it shows how difficult a decision.

I'm for continuous renovation.

I'd start with making the Stretford end in to a single tier standing terrace and have reduced price tickets. Fan experience and atmosphere should be no 1 priority.

You could probably do this in a year if you start in the summer and finish it the following summer.

Then I'd look at expanding Charlton stand. I'm sure it's possible.

The Stretford End has a capacity of 14,000. Tottenhams single tier South Stand is 17,000.
Dortmunds yellow wall is 24,000.

So that shows it's possible to increase capacity here by up to 10,000.

An extra 10,000 cheap tickets would be wonderful for atmosphere

That's a big structural change, surely a near re-build. If you are spending a year on one stand it makes more sense to spend two on a new stadium incorporating that design (which 100% should be done), with no loss of match day revenue.

Time and money spent upgrading you are going to eventually get to the point where you may as well have done a re-build and you'd have got a better end result.

Yeah it's hard to know. I'm for keeping the old stadium but maybe it's not worth it

I live outside of Pittsburgh in the States. Very blue collar city, built on the backs of steel workers and plants. The NFL stadium there (well, it also houses Pitt University games) just changed sponsors much to the horror of locals, but for the longest time was called Heinz Field. Had two massive Heinz ketchup bottles on the scoreboard on the open end of the stadium, looking out to the city's sky line. Lovely to look at during night games when they lit up. They've since been torn down with a the stadium changing names last year. But for the longest time, on American TV, the stadium was just kind of known as the "big ketchup bottle" to people outside of Pittsburgh...I know, so original.

Yeah , just adding a few cents here to say I support a full rebuild, I love that video on the other page and if we really want to move on from the historic big club with the old school style stadium draped in history and evolve to match the other historic clubs in the world we will need a new stadium to match that ambition. Building on top of the current one is essentially a longer term project.

Top teams with new stadiums:
- Bayern, Allianz Arena
- Juventus, Juventus Allianz Stadium
- Man City, Etihad Stadium (redevelopment)
- Arsenal, Emirates (Not new but definitely modern)
- Spurs, Tottenham Stadium (state of the art best in class)
- Everton, In progress
- Crystal Palace, Planning permission granted redevelopment/rebuild
- Chelsea, Rebuild planned *new stadium essentially
- Liverpool, Expansion planned
- Newcastle, Rumoured to be expanding or rebuilding
- Inter/Milan, New stadiums planned
- PSG, New stadium rumoured to be in Development
- Barcelona, Rebuild in progress, will appear to be a new stadium
- Madrid, Rebuild in progress, looks like a new stadium

Unless we move with the times and redevelop or rebuild OT we will be just stuck in the doldrums with a historic but architechtually jurassic stadium.

I would love to see United the biggest club in the world with a brand new state of the art stadium with elements of the old stadium, bring over the stretford end, SAF stand, SBC stand, keep the player entrance in the corner etc just keep it modernized.

The entire look of the stadium and facilities needs a huge overhaul, it looks stuck in the 80s/90s whilst recognisable its a complete eye sore in reality.

We should rebuild, keep the name, not sure why there is so much around this, just call it Old Trafford, the stadium is named after the area anyway and surround it with the sort of facilities Etihad campus has for example.
