Official RedCafe Top 50 Television Shows of All Time - The Countdown

Which countdown would you like to see next?

Seriously, we need a rule about it. Just FIFA/PES/Football Manager. Voting by the year means that none of them would get a high place.
Think thats unfair too though, PES5 is standalone brilliance.

Okay:
No Kotor, Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 7, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Chrono Trigger, BioShock, Half Life, Half Life 2, Dragon Age: Origin, System Shock 2, Desu Ex etc.

What the hell are you going to vote if you exclude these games?

I love The Wire. Had it on my fourth position (my top 2 are Battlestar Galactica and Game Of Thrones which were more personal choices rather than the two best ever TV shows). If I had voted as a critique I would had BB on the first place and TW on the second.
It's a work in progress but so far I've got Crysis 2, Bioshock 2 and 13 FIFA games.

It is my favorite football game by a country mile, but I guess it is better to go only with PES rather than divide votes by the version. Ultimatelly they would either get only a lower place, or not be on the list alone.

Add Deus Ex: The Invisible War there.

Father Ted in top 10 is too high. It should not be higher than 30. I have not seen Fools and Horses so won't comment.

Peep show is too high as well.

Worst show on it is Prison break though. Bar S1 it was garbage
Ted should be no. 1. Fact!

Seconded on season 4 of The Wire. That was alchemic.

I can live with Breaking Bad on top, it's an excellent show in it's own right.

Is anyone here a fan of Justified?

Yep. I love it. I could watch Raylan and Boyd all day. Put it in mine list at #9.

Take your game chat into the game thread, it's up and running!

Is it cheating to include The Orange Box?? Cos surely that > everything.

You're all idiots.
Incredibly disappointing, but that's democracy for you. Unless I missed it, I can't believe Justified didn't make the list.

Breaking Bad had half the number 1 votes that The Wire had, which makes me wonder if a number of people just haven't seen The Wire (resulting in it not making several lists,) whereas everyone has seen Breaking Bad.

Breaking Bad is a tremendous, Here's what Sir Anthony Hopkins said in an open letter to Bryan Cranston....

Dear Mister Cranston.

I wanted to write you this email - so I am contacting you through Jeremy Barber - I take it we are both represented by UTA . Great agency.

I've just finished a marathon of watching "BREAKING BAD" - from episode one of the First Season - to the last eight episodes of the Sixth Season. [Ed note: There are in fact five seasons of Breaking Bad; this might have been wishful thinking.] (I downloaded the last season on AMAZON) A total of two weeks (addictive) viewing.

I have never watched anything like it. Brilliant!

Your performance as Walter White was the best acting I have seen - ever.

I know there is so much smoke blowing and sickening bullshit in this business, and I've sort of lost belief in anything really.

But this work of yours is spectacular - absolutely stunning. What is extraordinary, is the sheer power of everyone in the entire production. What was it? Five or six years in the making? How the producers (yourself being one of them), the writers, directors, cinematographers.... every department - casting etc. managed to keep the discipline and control from beginning to the end is (that over used word) awesome.

From what started as a black comedy, descended into a labyrinth of blood, destruction and hell. It was like a great Jacobean, Shakespearian or Greek Tragedy.

If you ever get a chance to - would you pass on my admiration to everyone - Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, R.J. Mitte, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Steven Michael Quezada - everyone - everyone gave master classes of performance ... The list is endless.

Thank you. That kind of work/artistry is rare, and when, once in a while, it occurs, as in this epic work, it restores confidence.

You and all the cast are the best actors I've ever seen.

That may sound like a good lung full of smoke blowing. But it is not. It's almost midnight out here in Malibu, and I felt compelled to write this email.

Congratulations and my deepest respect. You are truly a great, great actor.

Best regards

Tony Hopkins.

2 or possibly 3 of those games will make my list.

The Sopranos in 4th is disappointing. In much the same way The Simpsons led the way in it's field for animated comedy, The Sopranos did for tv drama.

yes revan, i'll cry, over something on an internet forum.

anyway, BB has a far higher viewer base than The Wire and also only finished airing a couple of months ago.

It was in more lists, but number 1 only half as much as The Wire. Perhaps we need to change the voting system. 8 people voting for Breaking Bad at number 6 beat 5 voting for The Wire at number 1.
--

Revan - you'll hate me, but I'm one of those people who's seen (some of) The Wire and didn't include it in my list. I imagine I would have if I had ever got back round to it and finished it mind.

Could appreciate what I watched of it and why people think it's great - but it didn't keep my interest. It wasn't really so much a fault with the show; it just didn't seem to have any particularly interesting characters which is the biggest pull for me.

So yeah, I didn't vote for it - so what? Come at me,bro.

The issue with these lists is that some people are voting for what they think is the greatest, and others what is their favourite. They're not the same for whoever said it was earlier in the thread.

You'll realise what I mean when I do my games list - as I'm probably going to put my favourite game at number 1. I'd never tell people it was the greatest game ever though.

I agree.

The dialogue is incredible. Tony Soprano as a character is the best I've seen in tv/film easily.

It has great depth to it. I fecking hated literature at school - sometimes the curtain is blue because the curtain is fecking blue and that's it. But Sopranos was just superb - I imagine that there are some things in it that are considered 'classic symbolism' in there that wasn't intended mind.

Yesss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great stuff Duffy.

This thread has been great for building my list to watch. As shown by my list I've watched very few shows. I'd start with The Wire and The Sopranos and work down the list from there.

Thanks for the effort again, Duffy!

Yeah, nice one Duffy for all the effort mate.

Game of Thrones... seriously? It's good, and sometimes very good, but it has issues, not least with pacing, character development and the writing not being tight enough. Despite its near flawless production values (let's pretend that the House of the Undying didn't happen), it's not in the pantheon of 'great' shows as this list would suggest. That it's ahead of Mad Men is just wrong(!)

It's hard to find a show that doesn't have some of those issues. I'll take GOT over Mad Men any day (I think Mad Men shouldn't be in the top 10...)

Do not like how it turned out. 10/10 for @Duffy 's effort though.

Can you please list the top 50 in the OP, mate.
Will do when I get a chance later on mate.

Cheers for all the positive feedback again.

Current and popular TV shows will always be overrated in lists like this. It's unavoidable, but hardly a bad thing as it just indicates which contemporary TV shows are most loved. If you want an objective top 50 TV show list, well, good luck.
