yes revan, i'll cry, over something on an internet forum.

anyway, BB has a far higher viewer base than The Wire and also only finished airing a couple of months ago.
e-crying, of course.

I watched all of Spartacus. It was okay in a trashy sort of way. But come...on.

Erm, Batiatus' arse and Jupiter's member. And Xena The Warrior Princess in the nuddy. That alone should have made it top 10. Leaving out the fantastic acting and brilliant finale (despite us all knowing our history and the outcome). It was far from 'trashy'.

It was far from 'trashy'.

I voted it my top 15 but I definitely thought that it was trashy. Trashy but hugely entertaining. The sex and violence was totally overblown whilst the dialogue was absurdly ridiculous at time.

Top 2 could have been in either order but 2 of the best TV shows ever. The wire was harder to get in to and had a poor final season but was utterly brilliant between. BB started strong and got stronger and darker as it went until it peaked at the end of Season 4 which was possibly the greatest end to a season ever "I won". Season 5 wasn't quite as good but brilliant anyway.

The Wire is much more complex, dealing with vastly broader themes, whilst remaining hugely entertaining. For me BB cannot touch it at all, still it's a good show and I should've included it in my top 10 but I haven't finished it yet. Still on season 4.

Disappointed I just missed out on the voting process for this. But the top 2 are what I would choose and in that order too.

The first two seasons of the Wire are almost peerless, but from then on my interest's almost completely carried by (imo) its one truly great character, Omar. The show was brilliant for how it brought all different aspects of life, to life, with characters and situations that felt so real & not couched in the usual good vs. bad fictional worldview.

I still think it was pretty weak whenever it got away from just showing things as they were in that moment, & instead tried to make larger/more obvious attempts at social commentary (i.e. the cycle of violence & crime). I think maybe in order to best show universal ideas, you need characters that are larger than life to carry them. Those same characters that felt so true to life didn't feel big enough - or the writing just wasn't strong or subtle enough - to make those larger themes believable or compelling. Most of the long-running characters became tedious after their first few appearances. They were so perfect in the moment that they didn't belong elsewhere, but in order for the storyline to move into new areas, characters ended up doing a lot of stupid shit. The press storyline, the political angle, & as much as it's praised, that whole growing up narrative in season 4, all felt like they missed their mark. The stevedore storyline felt head and shoulders above anything that followed. It's obviously an amazing show, but not one that I think is far apart from anything else I've seen. And I've found other shows much more consistently entertaining.

Cheers again, Duffy. Sorry I didn't see your notifications in time, it was the UK Office, not that it changed anything.

edit:

Doesn't say a lot, but does a good job of making you want to rewatch. It obviously contains lots of clips, so I wouldn't recommended it if you're planning on watching the series for the first time soon.

Prison Break made the list? What the feck happened there?

All in all a very good list though. Quite a few shows I haven't seen at all which I'll give a try.

Think I'm gonna re-watch The Wire next though, will be the fourth time.

I've just finished season four of The Wire. I apologise wholeheartedly. It's still behind The Sopranos for me, just. But in moving up to second place on my list, where it would be now, The Wire would have captured top spot. Simply phenomenal TV.

Had a quick look at the top shows. Top 15 is understandable (though I don't see the hype of Only Fools and Horses or Father Ted like you Brits do) apart from Spartacus. What's wrong with you people? Really? It's a black spot on the list. Might be mistaken for cancer.
