Official: Phil Jones will leave United at the end of the season

He had a football career that most of us armchair fans would snap your hand off for.

Injuries and Internet memes aside he was a damn good CB who played with passion and desire every time he stepped on the pitch.

Best of luck in your next chapter Phil.

269 club games for his career that started in 09/10.

He was a real talent who if his body had held up would still be in prime years.

Obviously should have retired years ago and became a figure of fun but I wonder how he would have ended up if it wasn't for those injuries. He was really something special at 19/20. People make fun of Fergie's comments about him, but those barnstorming runs from defence when he first joined were great to watch.

Him, Wilshere and a few others from that generation were great talents just decimated from injuries unfortunately.

Thought he had gone a couple of years back. What has he been doing? He was a decent defender when we signed him but degenerated into someone who could get injured playing tiddly winks. Wish him well for whatever he does in the future.

It wasn't just the injuries, though they were the biggest factor of course. He also just wasn't the canniest. Quick to dive in

That may have improved with experience though. Experience that he couldn't get because he'd get injured every time he started putting a run together.
It's not like he was a totally green U19. He played plenty and never shook that

Makes sense, his body (and mind) has probably been through enough with the multiple injuries and set backs over the years and at least this way he can devote his whole focus to something else instead fully.

Always felt sad that Phil Jones never got the career he could've had with us were it not for injuries. Congrats on his retirement - hope he does well in future gigs.

Yeah Wilshere was the same, your playing style is naturally going to lead to more injuries if you jump into tackles constantly.

Absolutely. You need to know when to go and when to stay, and he never really seemed to learn that. When he was fit he was a physical specimen and a reasonable ball player (though Fergie's Duncan Edwards thing has exaggerated that) but he was always prone to a brain fart and never more than six months or less away from another injury.

Poor guy. Was committed to the cause, seems a decent sort. Hope he gets past this. It is only ugly noise, but must be tough being in the public eye in these savage times

It's old news really, he's talking about during his playing days, still despicable though

It is despicable, yet we have exactly the same level of vitriol displayed on every match day thread.
Some people need club scapegoats in their life, unfortunately Jones was one of those.

There will be (correctly) be lots of sympathy for Jones, a guy who always gave his best but was so unfortunate with injuries. However many of those same posters will still give the likes of Maguire, Antony, Rashford so much unwarranted abuse.
Absolutely we can criticise the performance and attitude of players... but it should never reach the extent that some of these guys get.

That's one of the reasons I rarely ever go in that thread!

A good reason why we should all pause and think before we release our annoyances onto the internet.

Getting prompted by Jamie Redknapp. “Blah Val blah… blah… what do you say, Phil?”

FFS. Keys is a hairy trundle, but he had this cnut’s number…

Comes across really well in his interview with Rio.... Always liked him anyway

Yeah enjoyed that one.

The previous interview, nobody wants to hear a multi millionaire complaining even if it's justifiable. Never comes across well to regular folk.

The Rio interview was more like it and he came across really well. Shame they didn't speak more about Phil losing that confidence he had at first.

You sound silly saying it now but he really was a top talent. Remember him vs Munich away playing fullback. Completely dominated Ribery.

I'd maintain that with a proper and competent management structure post 2013, he would have been a world class defender. A lot of our younger players often have a difficult 2nd/3rd season as they get used to having that insane level of expectation.

You need stability when you're developing and we never had that.

I liked his intensity and putting everything on the line but may be it should have been more measured. Towards the end I resented all the players in United either being consistently injured or being shite and being paid a ransome. I felt they were holding us back and he definitely made me feel that way.
