Official: Phil Jones will leave United at the end of the season

His issue was injuries/fitness, not ability, is it your belief that fitness doesn't matter so much at Championship level?

It’s less intense in terms of opponents athleticism and skill as compared to premier league plus fewer games with no Europe or league cup.

Disagree regarding the bolded. The tempo is often very demanding as the teams are perhaps tactically not as developed as in the PL.

Regarding the amount of games - they play 46 games in the league compared to the 38 in PL. They do take part in Carabao Cup and FA Cup too.

Then why do players drop a league level as they age?

The two things I will always appreciate about Jones are his professionalism and work ethic. If he can at least instill that in the younger players he'll be an asset to the coaching staff

Proud of the club. At least we still have some values. Kudos to the club for giving him a chance to start a new career.

Because they’re not good enough anymore. The overall level is much lower than the PL, especially in terms of skills and tactical level.

To be fair you are probably right that despite the tempo and all that the physical requirements are not as demanding than in the PL, but I’d say the gap is not huge.

And regarding Jones it doesn’t really matter because the injuries have unfortunately taken its toll. Too long a time without playing football and it would’ve been very hard to make a comeback at any level. And even stay healthy.

Additionally I’d assume he only got contract offers where the income would have been heavily focused on the amount of games he could play so I can definitely understand him basically finishing his playing career. Bet he loves the game and would’ve wanted to keep on playing but he’s body doesn’t allow that anymore.

United looking after him when he's clearly been through a lot is something to be proud of isn't it?

In the grand scheme of things, it's a drop in the ocean financially and will help give him a foothold back in the game.
Its a really nice gesture from the club.

Considering what hes been through, also he has severe arthrithis and issues with walking in general to look forward to when he reaches his 60s. His knee is really shot.

Absolutely. And we don’t even know if we’re actually paying him or is he doing his badges or what the details of this are. He has a lot to give to young players, after all he’s been through.

Jones has played so little football in his career and earned so much in comparison that I’d have anticipated him taking less just to fulfill his love for the game for at least a few more years. He’s only 31, but yeah if he doesn’t have that hunger or his body has failed beyond reason, this makes perfect sense.

Even if he wanted that I assume it simply wasn’t possible, no matter how much hunger he had. I’m sure he would’ve loved to go back to Blackburn for one last year or something. His body can’t take the demands anymore, unfortunately.

His body can't handle it. Love of the game won't comfort him when he can no longer walk.

We're never getting rid of him are we?

Expect the likes of Maguire and Martial to be coaches here one day.

He can teach those kids on how to stay at United for 12 years without doing much.

Every time I see this thread I think of Phil Jones singing “You’re my Home” by Billy Joel.

The Caf’s history of slating our coaches, only to later discover they are actually pretty good, see Carrick and McKenna for instance, leads me to instantly dismiss anyone shooting this down without knowing anything about his coaching abilities. The jobs for the boys jibe is tired and pathetic. Give the man a chance. He’s retired, he’s coaching, he might just be very good at it. The point is, none of us know. Go and moan about something else. Lord knows one is spoiled for choice on here.

Has he been doing his badges or is this the start of that?

Agreed, this might simply be some sort of program where Jones gets the needed work hours to get his coaching badges, a lot of ex players do that at clubs they played for, nothing in this to be dismissive or snide about.

Good luck to him, happy for him to develop his coaching side at united. That pathway should be open to any former United player.

Good for him. It must be refreshing for him to be able to fully apply himself to this, instead of having to deal with constant injury setbacks.

Such a shame he lost so much of his career, was a terrific talent when he came through

I wonder if we could've managed it better towards the end, Ledley Kings last couple of seasons saw him playing once a week but hardly ever training. He managed to eek out a decent end to his career despite having no knees. Phil was always committed on the pitch I wonder if he was his own worst enemy and pushed himself too hard once back on the grass, charging around flying into things.

Wish him all the best with his coaching, great to see the club supporting him

What professionalism? Getting a salary for being injured is nothing professional. It's not wrong either and I would too.

But that shouldnt be a badge or honor. He's here because nobody else would pay him 100 per week and nobody else would even take a pun on him due to injury.

But he doesnt mouth off? Well doh why would he? He managed to get 10 years salary from United. He should be thankful we're lead by incompetent fools.

Look, once again I dont blame him. I would do the same if I'm in his position. But i certainly wouldnt comment on professionalism nor work ethic

Carrick is in bottom of the championship. Sure they lost player but he hardly sets the world alight after his initial success

I remember Keane was doing well with Sunderland. Until they goy promoted and they crash and burn.

I wouldnt trust either of them with coaching United first team squad

You’re acting like Bayern Munich or AC Milan wouldn’t or don’t do the same. He’s been a loyal employee. Yes we haven’t had value for me. But his body gave up not his work ethic.
