Official: City signs Clichy

I honestly can't see the attraction of going and playing for them when the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Us and even City are interested.. Which makes me wonder why Suarez actually decided to go to them.. Unless nobody was in for him and he wanted out of Ajax..

I think he supports them, no?

Nobody else went for him.

Does he? I recently read something Suraez said about joining them.. Ironically it was Torres who told him to join Liverpool..

He always wanted to play in England, did'nt he? I believe we were the team he wanted, I remember him flirting with the idea of joining United a good few times, saying they were his team in England, unfortunely for him Liverpool were the only team with concrete interest in him, also Ajax got a very good deal so would have pushed the transfer.

I think other teams were interested, but not willing to pay the kind of money Liverpool paid for a player in the dutch league when the failure rate of going to a top league and performing is so high

Also Suarez said that he understood he'd be going there to play with Torres, not replace him

He's got a far superior striker alongside him now though...

1241: BBC Sport news correspondent Dan Roan on Twitter: "Arsenal defender Gael Clichy's medical at Man City taking place now - interesting that David Dein's son Darren is one of his agents, as he is with Fabregas and Nasri."

Interesting...or just trying to make a story out of nothing?

I really think people give too much significance to footballer's "supported" clubs in their career decisions. Hardly any of them have ever been regular match-going supporters and most of them don't have the same sort of connection to a club like we have. It's much more likely that Liverpool was the best option available to him.

Its a blessing in disguise for them. He's been a liability for a long while now. He's shown no sign of recovering any form either.

I can't see how he's an upgrade on Kolarov tbh.

Kolarov is not exactly mister reliable in defense either and Clichy is much better than him in attack.

Maybe Kolarov has struggled because it's his first season, but I've not been impressed with him at all. He knows how to hit a ball with power, but that's about it.

Clichy is highly under-rated on here just because Arsenal are selling him.. People seem to forget that he is mainly being sold because he is unwilling to sign a new contract..

Clichy's had a rocky couple of seasons (playing as part of a dysfunctional back four) but he's definitely a talent.

Agree with Top that Kolarov isn't all that. Clichy will definitely be an improvement on what they've got and would have been a massive upgrade for the scousers.

I`ve always rated him but he was so so terrible last season, so many times out of position in the defence and has offered not much for the attack.

Arsenal were overall very poor defensively.. It was not always Clichy at fault.. But forget about Clichy..

Most players are under-rated here just for the sake of it.. Posters on here have barely ever seen these players (the under-rated ones) to know if they play well or just assume they are shit because they have never played for a top 4 team, in the CL, EL etc..

I can't really understand why Liverpool were after Clichy.

With Insua and Konchesky returning from loan to add to the permanently injured Aurelio and the out of position Johnson I'd have thought they were pretty well stocked with rubbish left-backs.

He has good ability, but his form has been very poor for the last 2/3 seasons

I don't really think that he should go to City, he will only get overcrowded in that big squad.

Ideal world would have been that we kept Clichy, but stuck him on the bench whilst a more competent left-back had the spot full time. Clichy is like Eboue in the sense that you quite want to have him when you're playing against teams who stick 11 men behind the ball, but when you're up against it yourselves, you'd rather he was sitting next to Arsene.

Gael Clichy in 2009: 'I really believe if you are a player who thinks only about money then you could end up at Manchester City,'

Oops

I wonder if Arsene found someone to fill the gaps in defence. He may need to sign a few in that formation, too.

Can't be that much of a mercenary if he's accepting 30k less than what Wayne Bridge is earning..

do you think the issues Arsenal have had in defence, including the goalkeeper problem have had an effect on him?

He's been a liability for a couple of seasons now. Defensively he's been found wanting (while Sagna on the other side is much more reliable). Attacking-wise he's gone backwards, where his crosses don't even clear the first man. Not overly bothered by him leaving.

yup. have heard how much better Sagna has been. did not need convincing there mind.

do you have a ready replacement on the left though?

overall picture imo is more rebuilding of the defence than may have been thought before.

I've read the title "City signs..." and I've feared the worst! I was devastated  But just a matter of time, before they get Nasri too :(

I am really surprised that City have bought Clichy. With their resources, I am surprised they couldn't find anything better.

I have never rated him and I bet Arsenal were glad to see the back of him.
