• Arsenal receive £5m offer for French left-back
• Henderson says sky's the limit for Kenny Dalglish's side

Liverpool have followed the £20m signing of Jordan Henderson with a £5m offer for the Arsenal left-back, Gaël Clichy.

Kenny Dalglish is anxious to address a glaring weakness in his squad ahead of next season and, having considered the merits of both the Newcastle full-back Luis Enrique and Celtic's Emilio Izaguirre, has turned his attention towards Clichy. The French defender has rejected Arsenal's offer of an extension to his contract, which has only 12 months remaining, and his employers are expected to cash in for around £5m-6m this summer rather than lose him on a free next year.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a host of European clubs since the breakdown over his contract extension and been touted as a possible makeweight in several deals being pursued by Arsène Wenger. Liverpool were forced to deploy Glen Johnson and 17-year-old Jack Robinson at left-back last season, with Dalglish offloading Paul Konchesky on loan to Nottingham Forest. They are awaiting a response from Arsenal on their approach.

Henderson has admitted it was a wrench to leave his boyhood club, Sunderland, but believes he can be part of a successful new era at Liverpool.

The 20-year-old passed a medical and agreed personal terms at Liverpool before joining the England Under-21 squad in Denmark, although David Ngog's involvement in the transfer is now on hold as the French forward considers what options are available. Henderson will cost Liverpool an initial £16m, either in cash or with Ngog included in the package, and the midfielder believes the rapid transformation overseen by Dalglish will lead to honours.

Henderson said: "Liverpool's definitely the place to help me come on as a player, and improve me. The club's going in the right direction and it can go as high as it wants. There is a lot to achieve. It's a massive club and we've seen over the last few months how good they are. So I'm just coming here to learn and try to improve my game and I'm sure that along the way there will be a lot of happy memories."

The Sunderland-born midfielder, however, admitted it was "a massive decision" to leave Wearside. He said: "It's hard to leave your local club. I'm a Sunderland lad, I've supported them all my life. My family are all Sunderland fans as well, and it's pretty tough because I've had some great years there. I've been there since I was seven and I'll definitely miss it, but I'm looking forward to playing for Liverpool now. This is a massive opportunity for me."

I am torn weather I want him to stay at Arsenal or want him to go to Liverpool. He is feckin shite.

Shit defender, quite good coming forward. Definitely worth more than £5 million so Arsenal best keep him

He's not even that great going forward.

Looks like the shit has finally hit the fan at Arsenal in regards to their constant failure to win things over recent times. Fabregas, Nasri, and Clichy losing faith in the Wenger "project"/"ten year plan" or whatever justification they give it can't be good for their prospects next season, whether they hang on to the player's or not.

Clichy would be a good signing for any club for £5-£10m, anyone who says otherwise is talking through their arse.

He's turned to shit in the last few years...ever since Nani made a mug out of him in that 4-0 defeat he's forgotten how to defend. Not worried if he moves to the dippers...Arsenal will get decent money for him and have Gibbs who looks better in that position anyway.

Not only that, in adittion to Clichy, Nasri and Fabregas, Diaby has come out today and told the papers he wears a Spurs Kaboul shirt around the house.

I hope they sign Clichy for 10 mil.

I don't, a change of surroundings might be what he needs to find his form again. An in form Clichy is very good. A couple of years ago there were serious discussions of who are the better left back of Evra, Cole or Clichy.

He can't cross to save his life. And he's stalling on the final year of his contract after a pathetic season. £5m sounds about right.

He's a good crosser, aside from his speed thats the best part of his game. He just always has a mistake in him and that keeps him from being top level. Even so, there arent that many left backs in the premier league who are better than he is.

Clichy is getting too old for Arsenal - and they have Gibbs who is the biggest left-back talent english football has seen since Cole...apparently!

Only to delusional Gooners.

Manchester City, the graveyard of Arsenal players.

He's still a solid player and at an age where he'd get better. He'd improve 'Pool but would rot at City...

City is spending so little at this point of the transfer window, really baffles me

International window just opened, and it's not like they need to overhaul the entire squad. You add the love in everyone seems to be having with Barca and Real atm, it's hard to capture top class players, despite the billions.

Agreed. But he has to be the right price to go to the club that would further his playing career (i.e. us). And for that to happen he has to be the one to reject overtures from other clubs until Arsenal's hand is forced.

The fact he hasn't means he's happy where the money and bench are. Would love to see City buy Baines now.

Sounds a little bit like sour grapes.

Surely, it would show a lack of ambition and belief in your own ability to join a club simply because you'd be guaranteed to walk into the team. Rather than going to a club which offers C.L football and a serious chance of trophies but where you might have to compete for your place.

Hehe. Another Liverpool target slips through their fingers. Amusing.

I honestly can't see the attraction of going and playing for them when the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Us and even City are interested.. Which makes me wonder why Suarez actually decided to go to them.. Unless nobody was in for him and he wanted out of Ajax..
